One of the topics on CNN’s iReport is “The Future First Lady.” It is supposed to be about both Cindy McCain and Michelle, but the overwhelming number of iReports ( ie those from ordinary people) are about Michelle. One of the most popular is from user davidblaine .
As for his wife Michelle, I believe she needs to smile more and exude less angry behavioral traits. Cindy McCain is MUCH more proper and first lady like in my opinion. She smiles, exudes happiness and optimism. All I feel coming from Michelle is ANGER, distrust and retribution for her drama experienced in her life. Not something I, or I would hope any person would look for in a First Lady.
What many of you who disagree with me may fail to realize is that I am a gay man. I am not a racist nor an elitist or sexist and I experience prejudice on many levels like many americans. I voted for Hillary and this will be my first time EVER to consider voting Republican. CNN iReport
Well at least he was honest.

I will say this. I don’t care what anybody says, perception is someone’s reality.
I’m going to be real honest here. I like Michelle but I remember when I first heard about her last summer and she made me cringe. Some of the things she was saying about Barack were very offputting. Remember – Stinky breath, smells in the morning comments. That was EXTREMELY uncouth.
Nevertheless, America is not ready for a strong passionate woman. If she’s black – She’s angry. If she’s white – she’s a Lesbian or in Hilary’s case “A Nutcracker”.
We can argue about this until we’re blue in the face. Michelle should NOT step outside without makeup. Sorry folks, she’s no natural beauty. Her natural face DOES look angry and off putting. She’s got to step of the fab appearances and tone down the passion in her speeches. I’m sure she’ll continue to look great but the speeches I’m not so sure about. Barack can’t afford for her to stumble in public and prove folks right.
I’m still in shock as to why the press doesn’t even go after Cindy McCain. A recipe stealing, pill popping, adulteress.

OH goodness. I think the issue is WHY is it that the perception is that she’s ANGRY. now to many Black professional women, the stuff about not smiling or appearing angry will sound very familiar even though we are complete strangers. Again, it goes back to your life experience.
I agree I thought the whole, “use Michelle to “humanize” Barack ” tactic was silly and it put her in the role or appearing to tear down her husband. I know that that is not the case, and suspect the campaign put her up to it. If you listen to him today, he is still telling anecdotes about their home life that basically say “Michelle is not impressed” with him. In fact on The View there is some controversy over whether she said he was “pathetic” that is what some people heard.
Joi a lot of people will disagree with you about Michelle looking angry without makeup. I don’t think she was wearing a lot of makeup at the Father’s day speech and she didn’t look angry to me. But again, why is “angry” the word you associate with her?
I am not saying she is perfect, but I think if we deconstruct why she is being viewed in the way she is, that might hold answers for the way we view lots of other Black women.
Joi beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Admin, you say: “I think the issue is WHY is it that the perception is that she’s ANGRY.”
I could find you clip after clip after clip similar to this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pfFYZJK_O4&feature=related
A lot is in the eye of the beholder. You see strength, independence, all the things we’re supposedly not ready for. I see anger — in her body language, her tone, her words. Where she says, “his entire life!” around :37 in, she is darting her head like a striking cobra and barking like an angry dog. I don’t want to spend 4 long years with her barking and striking like that. Very unpleasant.

admin
You see striking Cobra and Angry dog. Oh goodness. I can’t even address that one, I will leave it to other people. I am sure they will have plenty to say.
I just want you to consider the possibility that what you see as ANGER other people see as passion. Passionate oratory is quite common in many cultures, not just Black America.
Black women have access to a full range of emotions, not just passivity and anger.
If she is not your cup of tea, that is fine, I just think that people should consider the fact that they are viewing what she says and does through a lens that makes them uncomfortable with Black women who are not dancing on poles are humming “Amazing Grace.”
When I see her, I think about Fannie Lou Hamer, Shirley Chisholm, and Barbara Jordan. Heck, I think about myself. I talk with my hands I’ve been told.
In the end, I hope that in the times of $5 gasoline, massive flooding in the midwest, rising inflation and foreclosures that you will make your choice for president, whomever that may be, based on his or her policies. Now THAT is what I wish the media would hog tie the candidates down and ask them. Tell me how they plan to get the price of gasoline down to $0.99 or pledge a billion dollars for the development of a hand cranked automobile so you can wind up your car in the morning for 60 seconds and drive for 60 miles. I’d vote for that person.
Miss Orange, I am at least glad that you can recognize us viewing her as being independent and strong, but your views unfortunately are echoed by many people. Black women aren’t nearly as strong as people think we are. Many of them aren’t nearly as strong as they think they have to be. At least we’ve peeled back on layer of the onion…. even if it has my eyes watering.

You see —> passionate, conviction, strength, and beauty.
White folks see angry, unattractive, intimidating, scary, and …. ugly. Yes, I said the ‘u’ word. Have you read any of the messages boards out there? White folks are brutal towards Michelle. You’ve got to get out of your bubble.
SOMETIMES MICHELLE APPEARS ANGRY. Have you seen some of her speeches?! Please youtube. I grew up in the black church. So, I’m use to this but WHITE FOLKS ARE NOT!!!
Folks, you can ignore the trillions of negative press she’s received and tell Michelle to stay the course and continue to give passionate speeches, go make-up less, ‘appear’ angry, and lecture white folks. But will this help Barack? It most certainly won’t. There are a lot of undecided voters. Images of an ANGRY BLACK WOMAN which white folks believe to be true are NOT helpful. If I’m undecided about you but I HATE your wife, I’m NOT going to vote for you. See how that works.
TRUTH: Images, photos, and videos of Michelle without make-up making passionate (Angry like) speeches don’t endure people to her. I know YOU DON’T see that. In an idealistic world people SHOULD see a passionate accomplished woman speaking her truth.
Penelope, Jennifer, Caitlyn, BobbyAnn and NancyGraceLee are not comfortable with Michelle. People DO NOT vote for people they do not like.
Michelle frightens some. She intimidates others. You can fight, scream, kick, and pass out about this UNFAIR perception but that’s their reality. And it’s this reality that motivates people’s to vote for you or AGAINST you. We already know people get stuck on wedge issues and vote against their own interests.
What black folks don’t understand is that Michelle’s perception HAS to change. So, get use to hearing about cookies, bake offs, her “little girls”, pantyhose, unicorns, butterflies, glitter and rollerskates. Those of the safe issues. We like our First Lady’s to be safe NOT passionate. We want Jackie Kennedy not Angela Davis. And too white folks she APPEARS to be more like Angela than Jackie.

Well this is turning into an interesting discussion. At this point I should probably bring up the fact that the purpose of this blog is not to get Barack elected. I know that is difficult to believe, but I am actually interested in how the media and ordinary Americans depict and view Michelle as she is covered over then next five months.
I think that it will present an illuminating view into how many people view ALL Black women. I AM an idealist. I think that views and perceptions have to be challenged. You say MIchelle’s perception has to change and I say people have to challenge themselves to ask “what does Angry look like?”"Why is a Harvard educated lawyer scary to people? Why is her animated way of speaking compared to a striking cobra or a barking dog?” Why do we care if she leaves the house without makeup?
I don’t have a problem with people saying “this is the way it is.”
There always have to people who see the world and ask “but is this the way it HAS to be?”
Progress isn’t winning an election by presenting yourself as a cookie baking robo wife when you know you order out and pick up the cookies from a bakery.
Lets say she can pull off the cookies, glitter and unicorn repackaging ( ugh) Five months is one thing, but FOUR or EIGHT years?

half her image problem could be solved with a good video coach — it’s like she doesn’t get that the vehemence required to not look insipid onstage (as seen from the back of the room) is waaaay too much for a tight-focus telephoto lens.

Miss Orange:
I watched the clip, and watched for the action you described.
And I have seen white men make that sort of action while at the podium dozens of times, and nobody called them angry.
There again, as far as I could understand the point that Michelle was making, she may well have had a reason for theatrical anger – it sounded like she was making a refutation of people implying that her background was fake, and to my mind that’s an excellent time to show fire, and anger, and pride.
Pride, as it happens, is the main emotion I see – pride in her family, pride in what America was and perhaps could be again (which was what the “you could do that back then” seemed to be all about).
Anyway, the point I’m making is that if Michelle were a white man, these things wouldn’t even be an issue, and she certainly wouldn’t be being described as “angry” or “distrustful” or “intimidating” – even though the white men who do the same gestures and actions might be saying angry, intimidating or scary things.

OH thank you so much SNOWDROPSEXPLODES for restoring my faith. i was begginning to think I was the only one and was going to flee my own blog.
If Michelle was not a woman and a Black woman in particular, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion about how she looks or what er body language resembles.
She wouldn’t be getting chided for leaving the house without makeup and she CERTAINLY wouldn’t be called unattractive by complete strangers.
Clearly y’all have never seen CSPAN. Everyday men get up and speak passionately about any number if issues an nobody is telling them to tone it down.
Again, I think those of you who see anger are projecting based on preexisting stereotypes. There is nothing to fear about a Harvard educated attorney. What is she going to do? Write a brief?
Until next week.

Oh my… we want a “Safe” first lady? As the mother of two daughters and two granddaughters, I am much more interested in a first lady who can think than I am one who can bake cookies and be safe! Cindy McCain is a perfect example of a first lady who is so far removed from my world she ceases to be relevant… Michelle has some idea of what I takes to raise healthy children of color in this convoluted, lopsided world… Angry? that’s not what frightens people… angry and black? that’s the issue. I hope she makes it through this… no one should have to bear the indignities being hurled her way. Have you ever watched Michelle with her children? in front of thousands of people, she puts her arm around her oldest, across her chest, in that ageless pose of maternal protection. That’s all I need to know about Michelle.

Miss Orange, you have got to be kidding me.
If you see anger, it is appropriate in that clip. Would you not be angry if someone accused you of being something you’re not?
However, it is clear to me that she is upset about the comments, she is NOT focusing on how upset those comments made her. Instead she’s letting that energy fuel pride and passion about working class communities and what they can truly achieve.
How is that anything other than commendable.
She could’ve gone a tirade about it. She could’ve talked about how it wounded her and ranted about how untrue it all is, but she didn’t.

I think folks are missing the point though. Yes, white men get angry all the time. Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Lou Dobs, Sean Hannity, or white congressman when they’re making ANGRY passionate speeches about something. We’re use to that. These men are strong and fighting for what they believe in. But women don’t get the same pass. We know this. Like I said, you can argue until your blue in the face – Michelle can NOT afford to continue down this path. Go outside of this blog and onto other message boards. The venom and HATE this woman gets is brutal. My God, I think this country at times is filled with racist bigots. They had no choice but to re-make her image.
Every time Michelle has a misstep – it’s in the news cycle for weeks or months. And clips like this person posted on the comment section, only proves their point. I know you see a strong, intelligent, passionate black woman. Great. Now can you convince the rest of white America. Just like I’m not convincing you that her perception problem is real. You WON’T convince white folks that her anger is passion. They do NOT understand our community. And Michelle isn’t going to change them.
Assimilation is the price you pay for admission.

this is so sad. What path is Michelle to take? can she change her face? her skin? should she never speak again? Seriously what “path” must she take?
What we as women (all women) need to be asking is why does this country expect First Ladies to mindless, smiling dolts?? Why are we accepting and/or making excuses for this foolish and obvious racism and sexism ( the same sexism that stereoyped Hillary during Bill’s presidency). Yeah we can say “that’s just the way it is” but how long will we accept the status quo of stereotyping and labeling black people (women in particular)? when are we going to start asking “Why?” “where are these crap comments about and innocent wife and mother coming from?”
on another note not everyone hates Michelle. at the Tampa Rally they were selling Michelle Buttons that said something like “Always My First Lady” or something to that affect. Those suckers were selling out left and right. I think it’s easy to focus on the negative because the Jerks are always the loudest in our society but there are some people who like Michelle for who she is.
At the end of the day you’re voting for the Candidate not the spouse. How much do you really see Laura Bush other than her occasional reading things?? First Ladies ( or in the future Gentlemen) don’t run the country! Presidents do! Anyone who votes based on a spouse and not on the actual candidate is too dumb to have a vote.

How odd this all is! I’m white and feminist and of the age where I’d be a typical (college-educated) Clinton supporter. What I see in Michelle Obama is a beautiful, classy woman with smarts! Oh, how I love intelligence! I see her as warm, ambitious, witty, strong (as in possessing “presence”), honest and perceptive. She is, indeed, what this country can produce at its best. I don’t see anger but realize how some people might, particularly in view of the Stepford wife imagery of Republican womanhood.
On the other hand, I wish we’d all stop thinking and caring about appearance and gut feelings and get back to the issues.

Michelle is passionate in what she does. I’ve heard her speak, in person, several times. She is quite powerful.
Her ‘ humanizing’ Barack WAS necessary during that part of the campaign. Does anyone actually REMEMBER that time? Lord, it was getting towards the absurd, and Michelle was like, he’s got a lot of talents, but he’s STILL a man…he’s not the Messiah. You all have short memories – those times were crazy back then.
I believe in Michelle Obama’s passion, and if she weren’t a Black woman, nobody would be calling her ‘ angry’.

Q2theD
I think the discussion above just confirms that the true question really is WHY is she perceived as angry. I watched the clip and I did not see any anger. Just an opinion, a passionate and strong point of view. I agree with snodropexplodes. I have seen every man involved in the run for president display far greater passion and even anger without that anger being attributed to his core personality.
Even if during this speech she were angry. . . and that were the intent, she was discussing personal attacks of elitism and anger would be an appropriate response. Let’s all ask ourselves why are we so uncomfortable with a woman expressing anger. It seems that anytime a woman expresses displeasure in the public arena this is attributed to some personality flaw.
Michelle Obama is not an angry person. But she is entitled to express anger. If she were a man, she would be able to without being told to were make up and please our aesthetic sensibilities
Jun 23rd, 2008
Miss Orange
Wow, so many responses since I posted. I detect two main arguments:
1 – Michelle IS NOT angry; she is passionate and strong.
2 – Michelle IS angry; and it is justified.
Well, I can’t exactly tackle both of those arguments at once since they contradict each other, but let’s take Admin:
“I just want you to consider the possibility that what you see as ANGER other people see as passion.”
What to do? I SAID SPECIFICALLY in my post, “A lot is in the eye of the beholder. You see strength, independence, all the things we’re supposedly not ready for. I see anger.”
I don’t know how we’re ever going to get anywhere in this “dialogue on race” that Obama called for if people literally refuse to listen. I’d like to continue the discussion, but is there any point when you read straight past me?
Jun 23rd, 2008
jOI
@Miss Orange
It’s not that we’re reading past you, we just don’t agree with you. I’ll give you this, your perception is based on YOUR reality. You feel she’s angry. You have a lot of people that agree with you. So, Michelle is doing something about it. Trust me, you shouldn’t see anymore speeches concerning the issues. She’ll morph into a Cindy McCain – stand behind your husband while gazing lovingly. Michelle is not Hilary. She has NOOOOO desire to run for office nor has she ever marketed herself as a co-president unlike HIlary in the 90s.
I’m sorry but our country sucks donkey balls right now. If people want to focus on Michelle’s anger but NOT our high gas prices, foreclosure rates, 2 wars, trillion dollar deficit, healthcare crisis, food prices, global warming, and natural disasters i.e. Iowa and Katrina then shame on them.
I really think that the people who determine our elections are Cooter and Jimmydean. Jesus helps us all.

Nahja
I have to admit the first time I saw Michelle on TV she made me cringe – I have seen her in person since then and I always get the sense that she is yelling or fed up with something or another whenever she speaks. I don’t think it has anything to do with race, I think it’s just her personality because I know plenty of strong black women my mother being one of them. I don’t know if my perception is different because I am technically not African-American but African who just became citizen.
Jun 23rd, 2008
Miss Orange
JOI,
I deliberately did not address ALL the arguments addressed at me; as I stated, they are contradictory. I chose Admin’s obvious failure to read what I had posted. To recap my exchange with her, I originally posted, “It’s a matter of perception,” and she answered, “You fail to realize that it’s a matter of perception.” In other words, I made a point, and she responded by serving my own point back at me as something I hadn’t considered.
When Admin gets back to me on her (I assume it’s a she) failure to listen, or when someone else here can come up with a good explanation for it, I shall continue our dialogue on race, as Obama instructed us to engage in. I can only take things one point at a time, and this is a point I can’t get beyond. I mean, if you don’t listen to me, why should I even bother?
Jun 23rd, 2008
Ms CPA
I agree with Admin that the “angry” accusers are projecting their own feelings of anger and hatred upon Michelle. If Michelle bleached her skin white and injected enough Botox into her face to prevent any show of emotion, people would still complain about her appearance and how her frozen face is “un-First Ladylike,” she can’t win.

So basically, these people want Michelle to sit back, shut up, and be pretty for photo-ops ala Cindy McCain, Laura Bush, etc. Hell no!! This woman is an accomplished, professional, educated woman. A hard-working wife and mother. Anyone can see that she and Barack had a true partnership when it came to their family and careers. I’m sorry, but she isn’t some piece of arm-candy, who speaks when spoken to, or walks 10 paces behind her husband (as Cindy McCain, seems to do) she is an accomplished person in her own right. I would say that she’s just an African-American version of Hilary Clinton circa 1992. I’m proud of her accomplishments, and what where she come from, and anyone who isn’t can you know what! Because let’s be honest here, the type of person/voter who will not vote for Obama because of Michelle not being the “right kind” of First Lady for the country pretty much also thinks that Barack Obama isn’t the “right kind” of President for the country either. In other words, I don’t picture this segment of the population going “well I like Barack, but that wife of his a real…”
So let’s not sugar coat what going on here.
All the Obamas’ can do is what they are doing now. Telling Michelle Obama’s story and reintroducing (not making over) her to America. After that, what can they do short of holding a gun to someone’s head, you can’t make them do a damn thing. If they want to like her they will, if they don’t, they won’t simple as that. But Michelle Obama or any other woman candidate/candidate spouse (even Cindy McCain) should not have to demean herself, or downplay her accomplishments to make some probably bigoted idiot vote for her husband.

>>I think first, we need to say there’s nothing wrong with anger. It’s all about how you direct it that matters.
Michelle hectors and harangues Americans for being “mean,” “cynical,” deliberately “divided,” “uninformed, uninvolved,” and cowardly (“Everybody cut and run”). She has the right to be as angry as she wants, and I have the right to dislike her company. Why should I listen to her scolding and shouting and going all negative on me, when I could be hanging out with happy, energetic, positive people who share my love for this country and its people?
NAHJA, thank you very much for your insight!

This is fascinating to me as a black woman observing this from across the water (I’m in England).
My own thoughts:
a) I hope that Michelle continues to be herself, and no one else. If she chooses to step out of the house wearing little or no make up, some will chide her for being ugly, but then to many a woman of her hue whether au natural or looking as if she’d just had a Fashion Fair makeover would still be unacceptable. Perception is reality is the truth and since we as individuals all have varying perceptions we’re never all going to agree on any given subject, including this one.
b) Admin, you’re not the only only one who didn’t know where to begin in addressing the “striking cobra” and “barking like an angry dog” comments. I have rarely seen a fellow human being described in such a stomach dropping fashion and hope I never do again, for frankly it is truly disturbing….
c)Miss Orange, the greatest irony of all is that you are criticising someone for hectoring and haranguing people, scolding, shouting and pouring forth all kinds of negative energy when in my mind’s eye I can picture you with ease doing the very same……
Perhaps, if you were more of an “energetic”, “positive” and “happy” person yourself, you would be less inclined to perceive the opposite of those qualities in Michelle (and most likely others that you don’t wish to “hang out” with….). Just a thought
I have to thank you, though. Through your comments, you’ve given me an even greater appreciation of what Michelle is up against, and my admiration for her is all the greater because of that.

u are entitled to your own opinion. . .but i am also african and i saw nothing but a regular looking black mother in michelle obama when i first saw her. . . perhaps u can answer this for me truthfully. . .what did u think of cindy mccain when u first saw her. . .?. . for me those loving gazes at john Mccain seemed too fake a lil bit scripted,a lil bit too rehearsed for t.v. . .non authentic. . .
The problem with Michelle obama (if u can call it a problem),is that she is too authentic…keeps it real for u hip hop heads…and some people just cant deal with that…
U see as an african living in america for 5yrs now i know firsthand how this society subliminally programs u to accept everything white as right. . the reason why i didnt fall was that i have always been a rebel at heart even in africa,.always a non conformer, always willing to think for myself. . .outside the box…for me the african american experience alone is the moral fiber by which america stands,it is the jeckyl and hyde of america…its strength and weakness at the same time..but also when it chooses to do right something the whole world can get comfort from. . .think about it,what seperates America from being just another canada or australia or western europe?. . it is that black experience with the pain and glory that says only in america. . so when next u all choose to judge Michelle obama make sure u do it within that american experience…cheers
