Give me a break. America needs to realize that it is possible to be proud to be American and dissatisfied with the country. Why does America insist on blacks grinning and thanking the kind white folks of america for all they’ve done for us. And gratitude for what? Her ivy league education (which she received because of her own hard work and that of her family (she was legacy by way of her brother)?

Michelle Obama reflects reality. Many blacks view of the country is complex one. I’m sorry we don’t fit into your cookie cutter of what we should be.

MissClark – please, please enlighten us. Inquiring minds want to know.

Miss Clark will never be able to enlighten us. Black women have faced (and still are facing) hells that white women can only dream of in nightmares.

Black women have been more likely to tell the truth about this country than any other group of people, and black women have caught the most hells from telling the truth on America.

Unless Ms. Clark can disprove all the atrocities done against black women by white men, white women, and men of other races, Ms. Clark walks around with her head up a certain body orifice.

Face facts, Ms. Clark.

America has been a ravening Great Whore of Babylon against black women.

But, hey, don’t take my word for it.

Read books written by black American women of our history in this country.

Reading more truth will set you free.

And yes, it is possible to tell the truth on a country that you love.

Even if that country does not love you back.

And as for *gratitude*……….

……if any one group of people should be showing gratitude it should be many white people: black people have done more to keep this country together, whereas, millions of whites have gone out of their way to destroy this country—–both past and present.

I never stated that white women do not suffer. White women are not the only ones depicted in pornography; so too are black, Latina and Asian women. So, I guess non-white women do not suffer from the effects of porn?

And I am well aware that ALL women suffer in this country; but, facts do have to be faced. Many white women look at sexism as if it is the only harsh reality that women face. But, many black women can tell a different story of having to face RACISM, SEXISM, CLASSISM, and many other isms.

I stand by what I stated.

White women have not lived the lives of black American women. Because of the legacy of white men’s hatred of black women, white women in America will never face the vestiges of male hatred of sexism and racism that black women face.

And as for this part of your comment:

I am well aware of what white women have experienced in America at the hands of their hateful sexist/racist white men. I am also aware of the vicious cruelties white women have inflicted on black women, black men and black children, throughout this country’s history. I am also well aware that millions of white women still prefer to cloak themselves in their white skin privilege instead of joining forces with millions of black women.

Many white women living in 2008 America care nothing for many black women. Many white women in America benefit from the degradations done to black women by white men. Many white women benefit from the lies/myths/stereotypes created by white men against black women.

And for your information, many black women have cared more for white women than many white women have cared for black women.

Many laws that have been struck down against sexism/sexual abuse were first challenged by BLACK WOMEN. And why not? Black women faced the most hells from racism/sexism so if anyone had to fight against AND resist oppression it fell into the hands of black women to take on the war against white supremacy.

Sadly, many white women have stood more on the sidelines than they have helped.

Yes, white women suffer form sexism that affects all women, but, not all women suffer the same. Sexism is but one part of what I prefer to call the many-headed Hydra of Isms. One woman’s battle with sexism is not the same as another woman’s. Where many white women face sexism, millions of black women face racism and classism, as well as sexism, and that creates a different viewpoint and life experience. Black women have never had the luxury of deciding between whether racism OR sexism is the worse of two evils for us. We have had to fight both battles. When many white women should have been joining coalitions with black women, those many white women were working against black women. I would say the problem with black women is that they have had TOO much compassion for everyone: black men, white men, white women, people of other races——everyone but themselves.

I was very specific in my comments, and I stand by what I stated.

Many white women have not suffered the hells that black women have. Many white women remain silent too often when it is black women who are catching hell.

Yes, yes, white women suffer from rape, humiliation and abuse.

But, black women suffer not just from the hells that can be dished out by ALL men.

Black women also suffer form the indifference, the silence, the apathy, and the callousness that many white women turn towards their fellow black SISTERS.

ANN: I agree with you on many points but I also think you are very out of touch with the lives of all women. For starters, do you not realize that white women are also humiliated and degraded by ALL men? All women are treated as sex objects by all men. This is a fact and has long ago surpassed the race or background of the woman as sex object, for example.

Second, while there is no excuse for racism of any kind, make no mistake: racism was invented by white MEN. White women have been oppressed by white men for thousands of years, and when white women are racist, it is another case of the oppressed oppressing the oppressed. That does not make it okay, of course, but let’s be clear on its evolution.

Third, I never said women of color do not suffer in porn – quite the opposite. The point I was trying to make is that if women of color ever question whether white women suffer like they do, a quick look at some of the worst porn out there shows that all women of all colors and backgrounds are equally humiliated and degraded in this industry which is watched by ALL men and is a multi-billion dollar industry that is bigger than Hollywood. THAT was my point.

Fourth, I think your claim that white women are apathetic toward women of color and/or that they don’t do enough to advance the rights of black women is debatable. Perhaps you’ve had this experience with SOME white women, but most that I know care deeply about the lives of women of color and work hard to promote the rights of all women. In fact, I think this is one of the biggest myths/misunderstandings between white women and women of color.
