Rupert Cornwall wrote an editorial for The Independent citing the massive news coverage of Michelle Obama. He attributes it all to Michelle being perceived as “prickly and resentful.” By whom?
Her ability took her to Princeton, a venerable white Ivy League university. “No matter how liberal and open-minded some of my white professors and classmates try to be, I sometimes feel like a visitor on campus, as if I really don’t belong,” she wrote in her final- year thesis. “It often seems as if, to them, I will always be black first and a student second.” No matter that these words were written almost a quarter of a century ago, when she was just 21, the essay has resurfaced in this election year.
Rightly or wrongly, it has cemented an image of a woman who, for all her success in life as a lawyer and hospital administrator, remains prickly and resentful, in a way that her husband is not. The Independent
Wow, I will let him speak for himself. I love how he urges her to bake more cookies at the end. The fact that someone has achieved great personal success does not make them blind to the need for continued improvement and development. But I agree with him on the whole, use Michell to bring Barack down to earth strategy being annoying IMHO. It sets her up as a spoiler or unsupportive when we know that she isn’t.

What Michelle said in her thesis is the truth. Look at the way the media are treating her. They are focusing on her as the BLACK First lady instead of just the FIRST LADY who happens to be black. She is not perfect but like you said, just because a person has reached success, does not mean you should lose the ability to self-reflect or even aspire for further improvement. I mean seriously, what do these people expect her to do? Shuck and jive like a grateful negro. (sacrasm).

Michelle just needs to act like a white June Clever and HOPEFULLY the animosity towards her will decrease.
America HATES strong women black or white. Especially black. I have NEVER seen so much negative coverage directed towards a spouse in my life. This is unbelievable.
Hello – Cindy McCain is a drug pill popping, convicted felon, husband stealing whore. Yet, she’s America’s sweetheart.

We really need to fight back this hatred for strong women, especially strong black women in this society.

Do you think it possible with all the years of being nurtured by the affirmative action industry (which by its very nature is racist) and the likes of Rev (not so bright) Wright – that Michelle is just not a nice person? Cheers.

This is what I wrote in the comments section:
You are delusional to believe that if Barack Obama had married a White woman that he would even be in the United States Senate, let alone on his way to the White House. He would have never gotten further than the Illinois State Senate if he ‘d had a White wife. Of that, I am certain.
Stop beating around the bush, it’s not just that Obama married a Black woman, he married a VISIBLY Black woman from a WORKING CLASS, not Black elite background. It all matters. Without Michelle, Obama wouldn’t be in the Senate, because there would be no way, with his background, that the Black community in Illinois would have given him a chance if he’d had a White wife. Might not be politically correct, but he couldn’t have the background he had, and a White wife and think he’d be elected to the Senate from a Black voting base. Was never going to happen.
As it is now, the Black community is far more protective of Michelle than Barack. Many only give him the benefit of the doubt BECAUSE of Michelle.

“Do you think it possible with all the years of being nurtured by the affirmative action industry and the likes of Rev Wright – that Michelle is just not a nice person?”
And Cindy McCain is? After all, white women gained the most from the Affirmative Action industry… besides, her own husband called her a “c-u-next-Tuesday” in front of other people. I mean, if he said it and he knows her…
MRO is no more prickly or resentful than any other person walking the face of the earth being subjected to what she is being subjected to. Her experiences are what they are and no white person who is intimidated by what the media has taken out of context about what she has said or feels that their ideals have been personally attacked (when they have not been–talk about hubris!) will ever understand what it is like to have to tolerate idiocy, imbicility, outright stupidity when mediocre white people cannot wrap their heads around the fact that blacks can and have achieved quite a lot despite the laws set in place to stop them from achieving (remember, it used to be against the law to teach a black person to read)and they are not anomilies or freaks of nature because they have overcome and out-performed. Most of the idiots on FoKKKs Noose are angry, prickly and resentful–they just smile a lot to fool the dummies watching.
Don’t confuse a strong, black woman who is sick of the BS being throw at her with not being nice. That is where you are making your mistake.
And “cheers” back at you.

You can tell a lot about a man by the woman he chooses to be his wife. The more I get to see and hear Michelle Obama, the more that I like and respect her. I think we can all understand how she came to write her senior thesis. No matter what you do sometimes, it just seems like you are always at a party you weren’t invited to, and everyone there makes sure that you know it.
BTW: Harrold Ford (who I can’t stand) recently married a white woman. I wonder how this will affect his political career in the great state of TN.
Also, I just want to bring up the fact that I am not seeing any prominent Hispanic/Asian/Native America women sticking up for Michelle Obama.
Where’s the sisterly love? If any of you have read or seen something I missed – please let me know

Posted this in another thread, but seems to fit here as well:
So basically, these people want Michelle to sit back, shut up, and be pretty for photo-ops ala Cindy McCain, Laura Bush, etc. Hell no!! This woman is an accomplished, professional, educated woman. A hard-working wife and mother. Anyone can see that she and Barack had a true partnership when it came to their family and careers. I’m sorry, but she isn’t some piece of arm-candy, who speaks when spoken to, or walks 10 paces behind her husband (as Cindy McCain, seems to do) she is an accomplished person in her own right. I would say that she’s just an African-American version of Hilary Clinton circa 1992. I’m proud of her accomplishments, and what where she come from, and anyone who isn’t can you know what! Because let’s be honest here, the type of person/voter who will not vote for Obama because of Michelle not being the “right kind” of First Lady for the country pretty much also thinks that Barack Obama isn’t the “right kind” of President for the country either. In other words, I don’t picture this segment of the population going “well I like Barack, but that wife of his a real…”
So let’s not sugar coat what going on here.
All the Obamas’ can do is what they are doing now. Telling Michelle Obama’s story and reintroducing (not making over) her to America. After that, what can they do short of holding a gun to someone’s head, you can’t make them do a damn thing. If they want to like her they will, if they don’t, they won’t simple as that. But Michelle Obama or any other woman candidate/candidate spouse (even Cindy McCain) should not have to demean herself, or downplay her accomplishments to make some probably bigoted idiot vote for her husband.

“My bad?” Such a black idiom for someone so anti-black. But that’s the wonder of today’s pop culture, how people can pick and choose which part of black culture they can appropriate all the while dismissing blacks on the whole. So, a person is “mean” because they are afforded the opportunity and privilege to go to a good school? That equation simply doesn’t make sense. Show specifically where Michelle Obama has been “mean.” Or even demeaned anyone, which has been the case with other pivotal personalities in this campaign race. Telling the truth isn’t “mean;” that was the truth as she lived it and it was her truth to tell, no matter how uncomfortable it makes others.

The Mads, I’m just typing a quick few words in complete support of your words before I head for bed (it’s not far off 1.00am in the morning over here in London!).
Still, it’s in support of Michelle, so I really don’t mind staying up a little later than I should!
I am thoroughly enjoying seeing Michelle out here, and want to hear a whole lot more from her, too. Barack, you are a very, very lucky man…but then I do believe you know that!

Michelle Obama.
A woman who is healthy because she is both fortunate and because she works out.
A woman who has earned large increases in pay due to her hard work.
A woman who has two beautiful children she is raising responsibly.
A woman with whom has inspired a husband to be the most he can be for the sake of her country. A woman who stands by her spouse because he is worth standing by.
A woman who comes from a simple background and has succeeded yet has helped others along the way.
A woman who inspires millions of humans to work hard and take care of themselves and reach out to others.
A woman who has found that her life wasn’t handed a blessing but also found she didn’t have to feel cursed.
A woman who will be an inspiration for so many which in turn will make this world a much better place and yet Michelle has to live up to those standards and she does it with pride and determination.
A woman who like billions of others is a fine example to her gender.
A woman Michelle Obama who i could go on and on about but like she i too have more important work to do than to just go on about womanhood and Michelle Obama.

Thank you, Danielle for your generous and timely comments. They are appreciated.
I just feel a need to add that Michelle is a person that we as Black women do not see too much of in the White media.
She is wonderful for all the reasons that the previous poster, Danielle listed and many more.
I just wanted to say that Whoopi Goldberg made a comment on “The View” that has been – not one bit surprisingly – ignored, when she in essence thanked Michelle for representing dark-skinned Black women in such a positive manner.
This is to take absolutely nothing away from our equally lovely and accomplished lighter-of-tone Black sisters, but in a Western world where for the longest time White has been seen as good, positive and worthy and Black as bad, evil and negative, we have not seen too many of Michelle’s lustrous complexion out here, putting forth such a wondrous portrayal of Black women.
More, more, more Michelle!!
