the fact that this is even a legitimate debate is beyond me. how does someone’s past have any bearing on who they are as a person now? It’s a well-researched, factually-accurate and humanized story that has been blown out of proportion and taken as fodder (by both sides) to fuel the race-relations debate. Yes, this country has a racially-charged past but dwelling on it or attempting to place blame is not going to solve today’s racial conflicts.

The backlash from the original NYT story is encapsulated in this great video, along with an interview with the reporter who talks about how the WH was kept constantly in the loop so Michelle always had the opportunity to quash the story but didn’t. Kudos to the First Lady!

I do not agree with yvonne c,there is a huge difference between slavery and colonization..colonization was to exploit the ressources ,not only africans were colonized ,asians too ,ausa was a british colony..africans still have their identity and dignity,slavery was the exploitation of human being ,they were breede like animals ,there ’s nothing worse than slavery!!

Michelle Obama is educated, graceful and strong. What counts, imho, is the fiber of the persons and both Obamas are persons of strength and character. That is what counts.
What I don’t understand is the fuss about Barak Obama being bi-racial (white mother, black father)
This time Americans have a choice:
the past (Republicans) or the future (Democrats)

It does not matter whether one has the blood of a slave or the blood of one who lived in the era of the British colonization of Kenya because they both shaped the legacy of oppressing Africans. There is no difference in either one. They both enslaved the people on both continents and the British benefited financially from both acts of inhumanity in the colonies of America and in Africa . Perhaps these individuals who made these statements need to read some world history and some of the people who don‘t know the history of colonization need to educate themselves about this horrendous act.

I think I understand what he was getting at. It’s the flipside of the Shelby Steele argument — that Obama will get by because of his euro-ethnic mother, and certainly _not_ because of his Kenyan father. It’s an inartful way of saying that to the extent you aren’t aligned with euro-ethnic norms, you’ll be attacked. I don’t think it’s an illegitimate position to take, but I do agree that if you’re going to be talking to the media, you should feel a responsibility to be specially conscientious with your speech, Charles and Shelby both.

I just did and gave him a piece of my mind. I told him to please keep his racial analysis to himself. Black folks (some of us) will continue to act out until they’re told not too. We need to stop ignoring these folks and let them know they need to retire some of their comments.

Yes, he is OLD and is a product of his generation. But that doesn’t give him the right to exercise stupidity and his ego. He needs to keep his divine wisdom to himself. And if he MUST speak it should NOT be to a reporter.

I’m sorry but I am not against the conspiracy, Uncle Tom theories. You do have civil rights leaders who have sold their souls to the GOP for some money. Mike Huckabee’s campaign manager BRAGGED how he was able to suppress the black vote by working with black preachers AND civil rights leaders! Corruption is real. I’m all for giving people the benefit of the doubt – sometimes.
