New York Times’ Patrick Healy says that, in comparison to Hillary Rodham Clinton, Laura Bush, and Cindy McCain,  “Michelle Obama has yet to signal exactly what sort of First Lady she might be.”

Ms. Obama and the Obama campaign are trying to strike a balance when it comes to her image: A woman who is happy at home with the kids, her top priority, but who also finds time to hit the road a couple of days a week on behalf of her husband.

But even as she signals that this is no “two for one” deal in the Clinton mold, Ms. Obama and her husband’s campaign are drawing some lessons from Mrs. Clinton’s experience as the target of intense partisan attacks and a symbol of broad societal debates about how women should juggle sometimes conflicting roles and expectations. While the two women have yet to chat about the rigors of being the spouse of a presidential nominee, Obama aides say, some of Mrs. Clinton’s experiences can serve as a guide — and counterpoint — for Ms. Obama.

Healy explains that the hiring of a PR staff for Michelle isn’t to “handle” her but to stave off “continuing attacks” from her misconstrued statements.

To deal with this, Ms. Obama has a new chief of staff and a widening complement of aides — a broader staff support network than Mrs. Clinton enjoyed during her husband’s campaigns or Teresa Heinz Kerry had in 2004. The campaign is also being highly selective about media interviews with Ms. Obama, preferring shows such as ABC’s “The View” and outlets that will quote her at length (as opposed to newspaper snippets).

Ms. Obama often holds roundtables with working parents who are struggling to pay bills, and with military families to highlight the hard work of relatives on the home front.

However, Healy reports, the Obama camp insists Michelle is “the un-Hillary in some respects:”

She does not formulate policy behind the scenes on her husband’s campaign; she would not have a policy role in the White House; she would be mothering the kids far more than jet-setting as First Lady (Mrs. Clinton took more than 80 trips abroad during her husband’s two terms, several of which included their daughter Chelsea). And Ms. Obama has displayed no interest in running for office on her own someday.

Ms. Obama has also said she would be “taking some cues” from Mrs. Bush as First Lady.

Then comes Healy’s “….buuuuut:”

And yet: Ms. Obama will have a speaking role at the Democratic National Convention next month. She will be Mr. Obama’s top surrogate, in some ways, until he picks a running mate. And she plans to continue championing her husband’s policies — especially those affecting women, children, and military families.

Healy concludes the article with a quote from Lisa Caputo, who served at Ms. Clinton’s communication director while she was First Lady:  “There is no stereotype for First Lady anymore…[w]e’ve evolved as a country beyond one image.”

Is Caputo right?

  1. Doesn’t women have the right to be it all, I think they do, congratulation Mrs. Obama for wanting to be it all, and Hillary you are love….

  2. admin

The New York Times can’t STAND Michelle Obama. In one issue in two different sections of the paper, fashion and news, they described her personality as “strong” and not in a good way. THEY were the ones thae wrote that piece on the day se went on The View saying she was being made over as if something was wrong with her in the first place. THEN they are the ones who pumped up YET ANOTHER poll to imply that if Obama wins, its gogn to be Michelle’s fault. Now this? The NYT gets a pass while Fox News takes all of the heat while the NYT carries out an agenda that i just as insidious, but they cant be biased because they are a “liberal.”

People keep focusing on Fox News, but that’s too easy. The real work is in confronting the subtle jabs, that are rooted in stereotypes. The reporters at the NYT have decided that Michelle is a “problem.” Go back and look for yourself. That’s their narrative and they are sticking to it.

  3. Town

Translation: Will Michelle know how to act? We’re afraid.

  4. @ Admin–get out of my head!:-D You said what I feel about the article–it’s complete and utter insinuated BS…but I wasn’t sure how much editorializing I could do. This post would have been just that much longer.

But now that you said it, Mme. Admin, may I add my 2 cents? From the straw femininity fight between Obama and Clinton (“she’s the un-Hillary”) to the general image of being unformed to the NYT and needing white female models to mold her, this article is rank with with racist and sexist stereotypes aimed at taking down Michelle.

But I also think it’s easier to attack Fox precisely because they are so obvious and, therefore, easy. In reality, however, bigotry is both subtle (which is how “liberals” like to express it) and broad (how the more conservative types like to spew it). However, folks like to distance themselves from all bigotry, even within themselves, by portraying it as only “those crude, uneducated folks over there” as the only ones capable of being bigots–never, ever the distancers. Horse crap, of course, but that’s why the subtle prejudices and their believers slide because, gee, “they’re not so bad.”

  5. The new york time, the new yorker are all little Bthes of Hillary Clinton, they simply are classless, and they will continue to be….. Racist Liberals who hides behind a curtain, that is who they are and will always be…. just because you liberal doesn’t mean you don’t have fox mentality….

  6. rikyrah

The NYTimes has been HOSTILE to Michelle Obama from the word GO. I never trust anything they write about her. Always look for the double meaning.

  7. Hello there!

Congratulations on a great post, AJ!!

Everyone, Michelle’s new blog is up now. It’s called ‘let’s talk” and it’s on Blogher.com

If someone else already announced it on this blog then I apologize for repeating the news! Jjust trying to share with Michelle supporters.

    Peace, blessings and DUNAMIS!
    Lisa

  8. @ BWBTT–Thanks so much for the compliment, friend! We did a post about Michelle’s new blog here at MOW, but I’m down with spreading the good news twice!

    @rikyrah–NYT anti-Michelle radar on. Check!;-)

  9. Anything to knock her down a peg or two. It’s all propaganda cause the culture of power feels so threatened. The New York Times chose Hilary; and they lost. They’re salty as hell about it too. I live in New York and I haven’t seen a positive article written about Obama since he decided to run.

They’ve got nothing on Obama and that’s why they’re attacking Michelle.
