Posted by Carmen D. of Allaboutrace.com. In an article published earlier this year, The ‘Daily Mail’ online edition questions whether Michelle Obama is having delusions of austerity by claiming she was raised in a household of modest means. Reporter Sharon Churcher chooses as evidence a snapshot of a Michelle Obama’s childhood home; Michelle grew up on the top floor with her family. And more ominously, Churcher cites a declaration from a “long time friend” that indeed “Michelle was middle class.” And Churcher asserts that Michelle has developed caviar tastes. The proof? It’s that Michelle Obama owns an “impressive collection” of diamonds and jewelry and a single pair of Jimmy Choo’s. The article does not report what year the shoes were purchased or whether they were purchased on sale; but Churcher does state that they are worth about $800.00. Churcher also does not reveal her source regarding the “impressive” diamond and jewelry collection and does not offer details.
Michelle’s pitch is far from sophisticated, playing heavily on her humble beginnings and traditional values: “I was raised in a working-class family on the south Side of Chicago. That’s how I identify myself, a working-class girl,” she has told the voters, time after time.
It helps that she cuts a fine figure on the stump, tall and slender with a hair ‘flip’ reminiscent of Jackie Kennedy. And it does no harm that, while Barack, 46, comes from mixed Kenyan and white parentage, Michelle, 44, is authentically (sic) African-American, giving the Obamas an unmatched breadth of appeal. [...]
Yet even they have failed to scrutinise her seemingly remarkable story, or question how her homely rhetoric, full of jokes about Barack’s domestic failings, squares with the reality.
When The Mail on Sunday went back to the gritty district of Chicago where Michelle LaVaughn Robinson was raised, we found a rather different picture from the one so single-mindedly promoted by Camp Obama.
Instead of the one-room tenement that now appears in most accounts of her upbringing, we found a well-kept neighbourhood of red-brick Arts and Craft-style houses which have long been home to respectable [sic] black families.
“Michelle was from a middle-class family,” confirmed one of her long-time friends, Angela Acree.
“She came from a regular family. They had a nice home. It wasn’t a mansion, but it was just fine. It was a decent neighbourhood.” [...]
The South Side of Chicago has long had its share of gang-infested housing ‘projects’ but with the University of Chicago hospital close by, there were plenty of white professionals in the area as well as hard-working families in the Robinsons’ own image. Her mother and father graduated from high school, and that’s it. He got a city job, like a lot White working class men whose wives stayed at home. Rolling in the dough, they were not.
They don’t fool me. They don’t know the difference between Black neighborhoods in the least. I know those bungalows; if you’re living upstairs in one of them, it’s no mansion.
They’re mad that Michelle’s not from ‘Da Projects’, which is all they would qualify as ‘typical Black housing’. If you had running water, then suddenly you were rich.

PS- I know the area where Michelle Obama grew up – wasn’t no White folks. It was called ‘White flight’. Remember, Chicago has long been one of THE most segregated cities in the USA. When she was growing up, there was ONE ‘integrated’ area – it’s where she currently lives – Hyde Park. And, Michelle Obama did NOT grow up in Hyde Park. Like I said, they don’t fool me. Black folk and White folk don’t live side by side in Chicago…not when she grew up. White professionals in the area…..BS.

Rikyrah,
If her family wasn’t in Cabrini Green then it was in a great upper class neighborhood…you must be forgetting. There is no black middle class…no black working class……either we are straight hood or we are uppity elites…no in-between…that imagery just totally screws up white folks. Black middle class?? Oh hell no. Did you forget? Hillary already told you that only whites are hard working middle class. You slipping.

Rikyrah and Lynne,
Ya’ll are funny. I was thinking the exact same thing. Some White ppl still seem to be stuck on Michelle’s working class background because her family wasn’t rubbing nickels together. Perhaps they should take a sociology class instead of trying to revise “working class” to suit their critique of Michelle.
I remember when the media was stuck on a statement that she’d made at fundraiser for her husband a few months ago.
Michelle was advising the audience to get into the social work fields instead of seeking higher earning jobs so as to create stronger communities. Some critic accused her of hypocrisy because her annual salary was $250 – 300K. What that critic failed to mention was that Michelle was paying a hefty amount in college loans (that were recently paid off from Barack’s book sales) and that she could’ve been earning well over $300K per year as an attorney. What also isn’t considered are taxes. Just because she earned that much doesn’t mean that her income was tax-free.
If Michelle (and Barack) were on a real paper chase, they would’ve already been millionaires years ago.

Hmm…? This may come as a shock to some but working class people can be part of the middle class! In fact, I think a lot of factory workers used to be part of the middle class until their jobs were outsourced.
The whole point of the labor movement was for working class people to find economic success in their jobs and be able to be part of the blue collar middle class. I find this attempt at demonizing someone for not equating their working class background with poverty interesting.

So now they mad because Michelle was not poor enough?? People are really reaching to find stuff to complain about when it comes to the Obamas. So funny how no one has attacked Cindy McCain and her old druggie ways. Yes, its old new, she’s since been in rehab, however, that would be more juicy then talking about the house Michelle grew up in.

In Chicago, they’re not “Arts & Crafts style houses”–they’re called “Chicago bungalows” and have been the homes of working-class and lower-middle-class families (of all ethnicities) since they were built in the early 20th century. Also in Chicago, there’s a long tradition of home ownership among working-class families (worker’s cottages, bungalows, and two-flats) so the fact that the Robinson family lived in a house doesn’t tale away from their being working-class.

Yep, it’s an interesting one, isn’t it, Drock. We’ve got people running over to Chicago from over here in London to comment on and critique the fact that Michelle wasn’t poor enough!!
I tell you, Mr. and Mrs. Obama are proving to be quite the eye openers for some folk….
An aside: I’ve succumbed….it’s time to buy a scrapbook for all of these pictures of ‘em that I intend to cut out from here, there and everywhere.

Moses smell the roses. Now that the “media” has cleared up the fact that Barack is not authentically “Black,” I guess reporters need to figure out if Michelle was ever authentically “working class.” This is funny. If you look up desperation in the dictionary, journalism like this can be used as a prime example.

I am from Chicago and the type of home they are talking about is called a Chicago Bunaglows and some of these Bunaglows are actually two family homes. So if Michelle’s family lived on the top floor, they may in fact lived in a space common to an apartment. She never said she lived in the hood, she said working class, but somehow working class black neigborhood must mean hood to the rest of the world.
