The LA Times’ blog, “Top of the Ticket,” gives its view on Michelle swerking the magazine covers here lately. I’m hating the lede, though.
John McCain might have a point when he calls Barack Obama a “celebrity candidate.” After all, the Illinois Senator is married to one of America’s most popular cover girls.
You better be ready for a lot of her in coming days.
Potential first lady Michelle Obama will dominate the pages of three major magazines this month. She’ll appear by herself on the cover of Ebony and with her husband Barack on the cover of Ladies Home Journal. And, as The Ticket previously reported, in the pages of Harper’s Bazaar, she’ll be played by supermodel Tyra Banks.
The poster, Kate Linthicum, excerpts some highlights from the upcoming LHJ interview with the Obamas:
- On dealing with problems arising in their marriage, Michelle says:
“There were a lot of things time-wise that he couldn’t provide because he was not there. So, how do I stop being….
. . . mad at him and start problem solving, and cobble together the resources? “
“I also had to admit that I needed space and I needed time. And the more time that I could get to myself, the less stress I felt. So it was a growth process for me individually and for us as a couple. He had to grow, too.”
- On her taking on the role of raising Malia and Sasha:
“It’s a unit that raises a child. As far as I’m concerned, in this couple, Barack is the person who has the skill, the inclination, the desire, the ability to be in politics. I have no desire.
“So that’s a good thing, in my view, since someone has to be focusing on the kids—and that’s me. But it could easily be him. There’s no reason why the nurturing has to come from Mom—it just has to be there.”
- On the motivating love between Barack and the weeMichelles:
“It touches me when our girls touch him. Whether it’s with a story or a word. You can see it in his face. That’s the leader I want: somebody who is so moved by his own children that he’ll go out there and fight for everyone else’s.”

Three to four magazine cover and/or articles in the last month and all of a sudden we have have the Drudger Report citing a survey people are tired of the Obama’s. Let’s forget about the fact it is the silly season for the media w/ or w/o an upcoming election and whether or not the Obama’s are celebrities what I want to know is why the public hasn’t figured out that we live in a society was something “hot” is driven as a story line in the media until every last dollar has been wrung out of the market place.

I understand where you’re coming from as far as “the public” not being media literate. Completely understand. IMO, however, the Obamas–especially Michelle Obama–is a new moving picture in the US media: an undismissable Black family who may become the First Family, and Michelle as the First Lady. This, in a country that like to “exceptionalize,” “exoticize,” and otherwise degrades, dismisses, and denigrates Black people regularly. The Obamas are bringing to the fore the ways these media outlets and some pundits to speak about them and Black communities in ways the media–and, yeah quite a bit of the US population–aren’t used to. (Some topics bubbling to the surface: the meaning of being biracial in a racially divided country; definitions of beauty and race; racial unity and being a “spokesperson for the race”. And that’s just for starters.:-D) And, yeah, folks are getting a little silly because they want to cling to that old language and the privileges/advantages it entails/confers/entitles.
As a friend of mine, an Arab-American professor and multimedia artist, said to me, “This campaign, this whole election, is really graduate school as far as race relations in the US.”

I feel like the news media thrives on criticizing the Obamas for something, anything. I don’t know if they have noticed, but unlike John McCain, Obama hasn’t been in the Senate for over twenty years, and this is his first time running for president. Just a couple of weeks ago, people were saying that Obama needs to become familiar with the voters, now they are saying that he is overexposed. Give me a freaking break.
Some of these petty people will find any excuse to tear the Obamas down.

Get use to the media criticizing Michelle. The media seems to get a kick out of tormenting Dem wives. Look at how nasty they treated Hillary Clinton for years and she is a white woman. So, ask yourselves this do really think the media pundits will stop there vile hate for a Black woman? I think Michelle will get treated way worse then Hillary Clinton in the coming months.
Of course, after they have destroyed any hope for the Obamas making it into the White House they will then turn there focus on bring down Cindy McCain.
The U.S. Media is whores!

We need to make sure we buy these magazines the Obamas are on especially the ones that rarely have blacks on the cover like Ladies Home Journal, us weekly, people etc. If these issues sell well, they will be more likely to put more positive images of people of color on them.

It’s very important to have the images of The Obamas – all of them out there. I think Ebony and Essence are treats for the Black community, and why not, since we’re a strong base of support. Ladies Home Journal never has Black folks on the cover, so it’s good for that woman in Montana and North Dakota, who would never see Essence or Ebony, to see this beautiful couple on their cover. I agree with khal02, we need to do our part and make them good sellers. I know the US magazine with Barack and Michelle was a big seller. I don’t know about People. But, the Barack/Michelle Ebony was their biggest seller in about a decade. People = White folk- must get used to, in their minds, about the prospect of a Black FAMILY – in the White House.

Y’all better go out nd buy all of these magazines and put them in plastic because you never know when we will see the likes of this again.

Admin–True that!
And I just got a news flash: according to the Washington Post, Michelle is scheduled to speak at the DNCC the night of August 25th. I say Michelle Obama parties across the nation, complete chips and dips (healthy, of course) and “Too Grown” t-shirts.

Michelle Obama is also on the cover of UPSCALE magazine!
So far, I’ve purchased Upscale and Ebony. I passed it around but made sure I got them back. I’ve been looking for Essence, but I don’t see it on the shelves yet. That too will be purchased because I definitely want to add to the circulation numbers. Plus, it is greatly inspiring to read what she and her friends and family have to say about herself.
And on a note that someone raised earlier. It is strange how a constant, never-ending complaint is, “We don’t know her… we don’t know him. We’re not sure where he’s coming from or what she’s really trying to do to our family values.”
And now, Michelle is on cover after cover. And it is great she’s on Ladies Home Journal. I rarely read that (okay never) but I will this month! I believe these were the best, classiest, most assertive answers to the hideous New Yorker cover and other attacks (yes the NYer cover was an attack). MSM tried to define her, put her in a box, then call it satire or “political vetting” when called on their crap. But the Obamas continue to transcend the ugly behavior dealt their way. The Obamas are doing the world a great favor by forcing the U.S. to deal with poisonous racial prejudice in an international spotlight.
I’m so thankful that Black-owned and Black-oriented media have gone to the mat to allow Michelle Obama to clarify and define herself.
“If we don’t define ourself for ourself we’ll be crushed into other’s expectations of us and eaten alive.” Nikki Giovanni(?)

Forget the magazine covers…I’m going old school like my grandmama and getting a portrait (ala MLK, JFK and Jesus – the trifecta LOL)…..

@ Lynne–LMAO! And I’m not laughing at you at all, friend. My grandma had one of those portraits, too–it was a rug that hung above her favorite chair where she looked out the window and into the neighborhood. Wow…the childhood memories.
