There has been a roaring debate over the election night “lava lamp” situation. After reviewing the behind the scenes photos, the Narcisso Rodriguez dress appears to not have translated well on television. However, today when Michelle Obama traveled to the White House to visit with Laura Bush, she looked absolutely amazing after going back to one of our personal favorites, Maria Pinto
After opting for a controversial black and red number by New York designer Narciso Rodriguez on Election Night, Michelle Obama visited the White House today in a conservative (if snug) red dress by Maria Pinto, a Chicago favorite and creator of the blue dress Ms. Obama wore at the Democratic National Convention and the purple sheath she wore the night her husband claimed the Democratic nomination. News and Observer
Can we just stick with Maria? I think we can lay the lava lamp situation to rest. It was the dress’ fault.

Oh, damn, that’s a great dress. I don’t have the curves to pull it off though.

I’m with you on this point! Putting Maria on retainer is change we can believe in. I so didn’t like the election night halloween leftover but, today’s choice for the White House visit was perfect!!!! I hope Maria is working on the Inaugural trousseau. No need to take a fashion risk. Stick with what works and keep Narciso looked in the basement.

Wow. That Pinto dress is HOT FIRE! Was it custom made, if not, where can I get it?

I really don’t get what the big deal was about the Rodriguez dress. I loved it on her, and I love the fact that she goes for bold picks, not always what is safe.

TrulyTabitha, that Maria Pinto is from the spring collection and is not available to mere mortals yet. It’s also supposed to be a sleeveless sheath, but as with the election night Narciso Rodriguez dress, Obama had it “tweaked.” The Rodriguez dress would have looked fine if Obama had worn it as it was designed to be worn. It was a little too long, cut a little too high at the top, and the cropped cardigan did it no favors.

Yeah, I’m going with the camp that believes that the Rodriguez dress was not so bad. I think it was the cardigan that threw off the proportions. MO did tweak the neckline a bit but it was a dramatic departure from the typical boring ensemble we normally see. Contrary to what we all remember, even the great style icons like Princess Diana (remember the strapless black gown) and Jackie O wore ensembles that were criticized.
I agree that Maria Pinto is MO’s Oleg Cassini! I can’t help but wonder what color MO is going to wear the swearing in ceremony.

I couldn’t agree with you more, Tanisha. That dress was perfect. Everyone is different and has different tastes. I admire Michelle for not going for the more conventional look.

I liked the Election Night Dress, but she WAS looking fierce at The White House.

Top models and Michelle Obama have certainly nothing in common when it comes to their bodies. Michelle has awful legs, huge hips and …….yes, she can wear a patatoe sack. Not even the nicest dress would help to hide that….

Mmmm…….
Well, given that many of us have been taught by relentless and unrealistic media images to believe that “top models” bodies should be composed of fleshless hips, meat free, meal deprived thighs and, economy sized behinds, it’s no wonder that some might find Michelle’s womanly, well proportioned assets “awful.”
(Re: the dresses, I loved them both; the election night one because it said so eloquently that here was a lady unafraid of taking style risks and chances, and the White House one because it was ladylike, subtly sexy and in such a standout, vibrant colour.)

I liked the Rodriguez dress, but it would have looked better on tv had the black fabric in front not been shiny, and the sweater been more fitted.
The Pinto dress however? Just sheer perfection. She rocked it.

Hell no !!!! Please She has no taste. Zero to say the least.
I notice she likes red but red is not her color. no……….

To ELAGOL: It saddens me that you have taken time out to criticize this woman’s physique. You are obviously tricked into believing that women must look frail and sickly.
Although Ms. O has curves, she’s still not that big of a women as compared to the average American woman.
I truly believe she is a treat to see and inspires women with curves to not necessarily hide them but compliment them with the right outfit. She is truly an example of a beautiful woman. With the awkwardness of being extremely tall, she is great at feminizing herself.
I just love it.

The Pinto dress was fine in its runway version, but the longer, more modest adaptation Michelle chose turned out poorly. The shiny satin should have been some matte fabric instead, and the expanse of solid red below the waist – so short in the runway original – was extended over so much of her abdomen, and glowed so much on camera, that she unfortunately looked pregnant in frontal views (though not from the sides). I’ve heard it called “the lava-lamp dress” – oh, dear. This was a one-time whoops, I expect. I think Obama and Pinto usually look terrific together.

It took a while for the lava lamp dress to grow on me, but it did. I think that if Michelle had dropped the cardigan and rocked some black jewelry or her famous pearls and wore higher heeled shoes, the lava lamp would have made a much better statement. I did however love the red snug number and the DNC blue. I hope Michelle will go back to her power outfits and throw that makeover image look under the bus. The two biggest nights of her husband’s life and hers(acceptance night and election night) will forever be marked by bad fashion choices. Oh well, she’ll have four more years to make up for these. Let’s hope we don’t have another head dropper on inauguration day and ball night!

I am so very proud of Michelle and what she brings to the table in her own inidivuality of style and what she is most comfortable wearing. She has to be comfortable for herself not always for the public main street. She is a very intelligent woman and she is familiar with designers and what’s trend and what’s appropriate for the occasion. She will adjust and try to please everyone but she too has to be pleased. I love her and appreciate her and she will bring a lot more to the table than just what to wear. Of course, I know she has a public to consider but put yourself in her shoes.
Have some compassion!

Michelle Obama is a class act. What is remarkable about her is what exudes from the inside. No matter what you clothe her in.. when she speaks it overrides a temporary garment. I thought that the dress was not as conservative as it could have been– but SHE liked it and she had to wear it. The new First Lady has plenty of time to perfect her own style. When you have worked as hard as the Obama’s and given so much to so many.. you deserve to pick your own dress. As for Elagol, we all forgive you. There is nothing wrong with the First Lady’s legs or anything else on her body. There is nothing awful about her proportions and her hips are not huge. If you prefer emaciated bodies without curves (more similar to that of a boyish colt) then that is your thing. Women who prefer gaunt shells over healthy bodies, exhibit outward signs of inward insecurities. Much luck to them and that. So, in that respect you are TOTALLY correct– the First Lady has nothing in common with those types. Mrs. Obama works out daily and is in great shape inside and out. Finally, the next time you wish to share your slanted views about body image,go to the page for Top Models where they identify with that sort of thing–NOBODY wants it here.

Michelle, bravo on your choice of the Maria Pinto dress! Unlike a previous blogger, I think that red is definitely your color. Some people may be a little envious that they do not look as elegant in red, as you do. Also, you have the figure to pull off fashions that others can only admire from afar. I hope that Maria Pinto has a hand in your choice, for an Inaugural Ball ensemble. Best wishes in her new role as First Lady. She makes us all VERY PROUD!!!!!

Like I said in another post, Maria Pinto and Michelle O hit another one out of the park on this one. Home run!
What is really only now starting to sink in is the possibility that the First Lady may actually change “mainstream fashion” to fit HER… and by extension… a lot of US.
Thank you Michelle!!!!

Michelle Obama will always look tacky. Her clothing choices are tacky, and classless and inappropriate. She looks like she’s wearing a bedspread, or a lava lamp, or a little cheerleading outfit for a sporting event. She does not look like a lady with class and taste, because she has none. To pretend she is a fashion icon, or has any style is just ludicrous, and you all know it.

No we don’t, Ms. Dickman. Mrs. Obama is a brilliant woman of great accomplishment. She is not arm candy. She is fit and beautiful and always tasteful.
It is not tasteful to berate her in the way you have.
p.s. love your last name–it’s so you.

Enjoying history being made with fashion. All MO’s choices delightful, whether they please the fashionistas or not. Original expression is what American women have always been missing; either American women buy it right off the rack or pay someone to put it together for them. So many copy cats in America. Can’ty even pick a gown for the Oscars themselves. Very boring fashion sense in US of A. To be really fashionable, a woman will take risks, make mistakes, enjoy and really love adorning the body with some expression of meaning, to delight herself and those she meets. Michelle Obama’s clothes are meaningful, even when they say, this is just me, just what I want to wear and spend. Dress to Express, Not to Impress. That’s First Lady Michelle Obama. She is awesome. The Queen saw all this and put her arm around MO first. That’s approval from a woman mentored by Churchill.
