Okay, I admit it, I didn’t really anticipate President-Elect Obama’s speeches over the campaign trail half as much as I anticipated seeing what Michelle Obama was going to wear, her makeup, and her hair. So I was over on Shakesville and I saw a post called The Marginalization of Michelle Obama. Well this IS Michelle Obama Watch so I read it and the author posits that by expressing out disappointment in Michelle Obama’s election-night attire, we are ignoring her professional accomplishments. He listed all of her professional and academic accomplishments and then he said this

So, of course, one day after the election, the top story on the inane Yahoo Buzz was how she dressed when husband Barack gave his victory speech. In fact, opinions on Michelle Obama’s dress were all over the media.

Sexism in America: It knows no race, income bracket or level of achievement. It is still ingrained in our society. And it’s only a matter of time before the marginalization process of Sasha and Malia begins. Shakesville

Guilty as charged.

However, in my own defense, I have a JD too, but I also occasionally buy an ESSENCE magazine to look at the pretty pictures. For the same reason that I have a subscription to Real Simple magazine even though I rarely read the copy. Its “Pretty” and looks good on a coffee table.

I also like the Pottery Barn catalog, not because I will ever purchased their over-priced partical board furniture, but because I love looking at the model rooms, and YES, I am one of those people who walks through the ENTIRE IKEA store without taking shortcuts so that I can see just how amazing you can make a 200 square foot apartment look with the IKEA magic. As a child, I must admit that I used to anticipate the arrival of the Sears Wishbook so that I could look at all of the toys my parents were NOT going to buy me. Every year I would gaze at that battery powered red sports car. I did get the sports car, but it had peddles like a recumbent bicycle, it had to be powered by Ike and MIke. I did however get that amazing wood burning set, thought I never quite got past the stage of burning Popsicle sticks… but I digress.

For me, the fascination with Michelle Obama is more aspirational than critical. She made me believe that I too, despite a complete and total lack of muscle tone in the arms, would look fabulous in a bright purple sleeveless frock. If they had sold the dress at Lane Bryant, I would have purchased it. But yes, I TOO was not enamored with the election night lava lamp dress. Guilty as charged.

To be fair I have SAVAGED male candidates during my debate liveblogs for what they elected to wear. I am particularly brutal on shiny ties *cough* Bill Richardson *cough*, ill-fitting suits *cough*Senator Gravel and McCain,*cough*.I don’t even go into the “Biden mullet/comb over.”

During our liveblog of the first presidential debate, half the room agreed that President Elect Obama’s makeup made him look like a claymation doll. We blamed the makeup artist and the folks who did the lighting.

As I understand it, Michelle Obama loves clothes. We love seeing what she has to wear. Trust me, If Barack Obama had come on the stage election night wearing a tie that was orange or had stripes that threatened to blind me, I would have commented on during my live podcast, but while the Obamas came out on the stage, everyone on the line during our election night podcast dropped the phone to go see what Michelle was going to wear.

I don’t think it was in an attempt to judge her, but just giddiness over the fabulousness that has been Michelle Obama’s fashion choices so far. She has made some excellent choices. In my humble opinion, I didn’t like the lava lamp dress because it did not flatter her. The Black contrast around the waist was too wide. and awkwardly placed. It was the designer’s fault, not Michelle’s.

She’s made news all election season for what she wore. Remember the brouhaha over the sleeveless dresses? It didn’t become a problem until this unfortunate lava lamp dress situation. Loved the makeup. Loved the weeMichelle’s, Love Michelle’s hair, but not the dress. If it makes you feel better, upon further review, I wasn’t enraptured with the candy cane striped tie, but I really wasn’t paying attention to what the President Elect was wearing that night, random relatives and classmates from all over the country were blowing up my cellphone.

I believe that I can do both, admire Michelle Obama’s amazing academic and professional accomplishments AND be giddy over seeing her set fashion trends for the the ENTIRE WORLD. I predict that the Michelle Obama hairstyle will be all the rage next year, and if it is true that she’s rocking a natural instead of a relaxer, a whole lot of people are going to be giving the creamy crack the boot in exchange for the pressing iron and the “Dominican blowout.”

Even Michael Jordan was occasionally off his game. No one’s perfect. If you like fashion, makeup and hair, we’re looking for new contributors :) Hit up the gmail.

Its not sexist other than the fact that probably its only women really focusing on it…oh…and men that like Project Runway…..but nevertheless, hey…just some things we tend to like to focus on sometimes. Guys I know like to focus on Barack’s jumpshot technique so I think it evens out.

  2. I didn’t particularly care for the dizzying dress either. But she’s still a stunner. No bones about it. And that’s why all eyes are on her; because she’s long, leggy, smart, and she has Barack. She is the green with envy and the admiration in the eyes of women around the world.

She’s gonna kill with the wardrobe. Cause she makes high and low end look hot. I agree that the red and black wasn’t the right dress for the occasion; but it was a horrible dress. I think the cardigan destroyed the runway feel of the dress. Michelle has perfect arms and I just don’t understand why she didn’t let them show.

The fact of the matter is that people are judging Michelle Obama by anglo standards of beauty, and we’ve got to get past that. That same dress on someone like Sarah Palin or Cindy McCain would have looked totally wrong. They lack the expansive and powerful personality to carry such a frock off.

Speaking for myself, I love wearing bright reds, including lipstick. Michelle’s dress was a vibrant and eye-catching as the lady herself is and we’d better get used to that. I think she should go edgy more often, but with a nod to the classics. And the first daughters looked sooooo cute! I wanted to cuddle them.

Is it sexist? Yes it is, because we’re all guilty of diminishing her accomplishments as a strong and intelligent black woman to waste time on something as inconsequential as a one-night only piece of cloth. I think we should begin focusing in on what she wants to do as First Lady to help working mothers and military families survive.

  4. um, yes, but this is part of being First Lady. in this case, they’re not picking on Michelle Obama. They’re doing what they do with First Ladies. Especially ones who are stunners. Do you think anyone cared what Barbara Bush wore?

Um nope, the dress would have looked worse on them. Second, that dress in no way is equal to a human being. This has nothing to do with anglo standards of beauty. This has to do with fabric and a pattern. Michelle looked awesome. The dress did not live up to the fabulousness that is Michelle Obama.

All summer long we have been enjoying collecting magazine covers around here.

Nobody is diminishing her accomplishments. Trust me, just because you are a lawyer doesn’t mean you don’t like to get dressed up.

Again, separate fabric from human beings.

If all you want us to focus on is policy, then you need to find another blog because we are going to enjoy IT ALL. All of the pageantry of the presidency. The First Lady oversees that pageantry. This is our payoff. We get to see Michelle looking stunning before the world. We also get to coo over what she selects for the menu of her first state dinner, what she will wear when they light the White House Christmas tree, what she will wear at the White House Easter egg roll and on.

I wrote earlier that Michelle’s dress was vibrant and eye-catching, which obviously means I LIKED IT. My point is that there is MORE the Michelle Obama than that Narciso Rodriguez dress, and we need to bear that in mind. Perhaps we’re just not used to seeing such edginess from a first lady because all we’ve had for eight years is Laura “Stepford Wife” Bush. And I’m sorry, Cindy McCain just looks like a refugee from the Junior League.

BTW, I stopped reading Essence Magazine a LONG time ago because of their lack of diversity when it came to black women. Not all of us have long flowing locks and are super thin. I wanted a magazine that supposedly represented black women in our variety to showcase that variety. Also, I hated the articles they did on interracial dating–it was like a bad guilt trip, and black women don’t need that.

  8. admin

@ Kymberlyn goody for you on the ESSENCE magazine. I don’t subscribe, but occasionally I do purchase a magazine, particularly if I wrote an article that appears in the magazine.

My issues with ESSENCE have less to do with the flowing long hair and more to do with the celebrity obsession.

  9. Media Alert: The Obamas are on the cover of the upcoming US Weekly. I couldn’t find the picture of it though on the ‘net, but since I bought it today, I know it to be true.

  10. bettyb

When people do not understand they tend to resort to negative comments.

I believe her dress was a statement of red for victory and black for mourning. Barack Obama’s victory was bitter sweet. He could not share his victory by looking into his grandmother’s eyes who had poured everything she had into him with unconditonal love.

  11. jaye

We don’t ONLY talk about her clothes, we talk about her accomplishments too…we commented on how she handles the press, on how she appears in interviews, on what she has done behind the scenes to help Barack’s candidacy, on how she has dealt with the negative comments…we have commented on the good and the bad professionally…so let’s have some fun and comment on the good and bad of her style. She’s allowed to make mistakes, professionally and creatively and personally. I don’t think the majority of the comments have been mean-spirited or sexist, it’s been women talking about what they love: clothes.

And clothes-wise, I think Michelle has put the focus on herself…she loves fashion, she loves looking good, she loves being herself, and part of that is commenting on her style. What I am the most giddy about in her personal style is that it exudes who she is…her accomplishments, her self-confidence, her intelligence, her sexiness, her self-respect, her prettiness, her femininity…her style reflects ALL OF who she is, and we are absolutely in awe.

We are so used to seeing rail thin, blank-eyed starlets wearing trendy clothes whose only accomplishments are the ability to take those clothes off…the clothes don’t represent them, they represent what these starlets think the public wants to see them in. Fashion, at its truest form, is about self-expression and self-care. It’s is about representing who you are intellectually, emotionally and creatively, and to do that, you really need to know who you are deep down and be confident in who you are. We love Michelle because she is the smart, sexy, self-knowing woman’s fashionista.

  12. Graciela

When it comes to clothes, the sexism always comes from other women. Women dress for other women, not for men. They envy, compete, criticize in a “sour grapes” fashion, and objectify other women for how they think the other women look like. They compare their own bodies with the others’ and waist their time in trying to mimic who they see as better than them. I also like to look good and dress up for the occasion, but I don’t like it when people (other women) concentrate on my clothes. I rather be admired for my intellectual strengths or personal integrity if nothing else.

Think about this, how people would really like to be remembered for after they die as their own legacy? “Oh, she dressed very well,” or “She was a hero, a leader, brilliant” It’s no brainer, isn’t? Nevertheless, good luck with your project and keep “watching.”

  13. Jo

I’m so glad you said this! While I consider myself a pretty staunch feminist, I was interested to see what she was going to wear, and Shakesville had me feeling all guilty about it.

Michelle Obama’s role on election night was to stand as a wife, mother, and partner alongside her family, not a policy aide. If she had given a speech on a substantive issue and everyone commented on her pretty dress rather than what she said, I’d be offended. But Tuesday night was Barack’s night and it was a celebration for both her family and her country. They all looked fantastic.

  14. I didn’t see the coverage of Michelle Obama’s clothes to be sexist. I would only consider the coverage to be so if the media only focused on what she wore, but I haven’t seen that to be true.

However, there are a difference in how women and men are covered in the media, I won’t deny that. Partially, its because of society’s view of men and women and it is also because of how often women ‘change costumes.’ Constantly changing your wardrobe brings attention to it. Bar none.

But, with all that considered, I still don’t mind the coverage. Michelle Obama is not the head of state, but the First Lady and I don’t see anything wrong with one half of this historic pair being fashionable.

  15. Trisha

I think MIchelle Obama lacks finesse and grace. She keeps herself up nice, however she walks and carries herself quite awkward. She is not First Lady material.

  16. diana

umm hello.. she’s a woman. we love clothes. we like to know what other women wear. I loved it actually. i thought it was young and fresh and different. i think she’s a perfect new first lady. she’s not going to be like the others, just like her husband isn’t going to be like the other presidents. this is a good thing.

  17. Dana

Well, Michelle is now the alpha female of the United States. All eyes are on her. She is a role model. People look to her for inspiration. Naturally, what she wears is a part of that discussion. If you remember, when she wore the black and white leaf print, it flew off the rack and went into back orders.

I think she got bad advice on the red and black dress. It actually competed for attention with Barack’s win and that’s not good. Barack and the girls looked great.

  18. A.G.

I never even thought about her dress. I just like to hear the speeches and reading the articles in NY times. I was so engaged in the victory of Barack Obama. I think it’s stupid for American women to focus on her dresses. It shows how superficial people are. On a more positive note, if women had to admire anyone for their style it should be Michelle Obama instead of nasty pasty hilton. Michelle is classy like Jackie O.

  19. Susan

While I agree that Michelle is a little awkward (kinda like a female basketball player in a dress) I definitely think that she is first lady material. In fact she will adjust. The clothes, the finesse, she will come into her own. She already has the foundation which includes beauty, smarts, accomplishments and the most powerful man in the world who loves her and lets everyone know. They are a package deal… get over it!

  20. Just because I walk dogs for a living (and, yes am a white 42 yo woman), doesn’t mean I don’t know a woman with a great bod in a great dress. Which of course, that election night dress only looked right on the original model, check it out on one of those fashion mag comparison. Focusing on Michelle Obama’s clothes is so not sexist, it’s so … patriotic!

After all, anything and everything she’s been wearing seems to me to be American-designed and even the major labels, G.Crew and The Gap are, I believe, headquartered here in the U.S. Plus, any clothes she’s wearing that we – who have bodies like hers, fabulous butt and all – can now go searching to *buy* it in our local stores.

Apart from all her other wonderful accomplishments, I foresee that Michelle will be helping the U.S. economy by wearing clothes that are American-made, as she seems to prefer Chicago-based designers.

Her The View comments have made me want to go shopping! And, I don’t have one credit card. So, cash in hand I go to help our economy!

  21. I took the poll and voted no. Michelle is now an American icon. We CARE about what she wears. She’s a role model and a wonderful person.

  22. Andrea C

I think she looked absolulty amazing and so did the weeMichelle’s. She has her own style and I don’t think anyone should take that away from her. Why can’t we except change, why does she have to live by the standards set for the caucasion sisters in the ‘white House..didn’t we vote for change, Now is the time to stand up for our own individual styles, as long as it is respectful, and she does have her boobs hanging out all over the place..Didn’t we hate those pearls that Brab Bush wore, I know I did..

  23. Andrea C

dose not have her boobs hanging out.

  24. rachael

I’m sure you, and plenty others, are fully capable of appreciating Michelle Obama’s fashion and intelligence. The real question is whether the general public is capable of this. What critics are really trying to reveal is the media’s complete over-emphasis on Obama’s dresses and other attire. When the general public has easy access to her choices in fashion but they have to do actual research to understand how well-rounded she is, they get the wrong picture. The problem isn’t what you personally choose to talk about, the problem is that the media is perpetuating the stereotype that all you need to know about a women you can learn from her appearances.

  25. danadevin85

    no i don’t think it’s sexist
i think people are just interested in her
doesn’t matter what the subject is
they are just interested in her
i always wait to see what she’s wearing
    she’s a classy woman
and will make a wonderful first lady

  26. Brian

    No not all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is not appropriate for a person of her kind to be wearing very revealing outfits on campaign trail and in the White House, it gives off the exotic dancing strip club feel to this!! I mean come on she looked like a firework/Tellitubbie with ketchup and hot magma plus it’s not appropriate to have her children catch the fashion cold from her ewwwww!!!! That’s the last thing we need and both there dresses were a little too short
Instead she should wear pants it’s too revealing
Well we are on the topic of Sexist the press was extremely sexist towards Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin

  27. Brian

In addition her legs in the dress looked like stumps of trees

  28. Laynie

just wondering if anyone ahs any other good websites that talk about sexism against michelle obama??? e-mail em to me @ livebreathegymnastics@yahoo.com, but NO SPAM PLEASE!!! I WILL block you!!!
