Posted by Carmen D. All About Race More information about Michelle Obama’s slave ancestry has been released to the public. Indeed it is an emblematic fact of our nation’s promise that some of our future first lady’s forefathers and foremothers spent their lives in bondage . But to me, what is most important about Michelle Obama’s family trajectory is that there was a strong emphasis on liberation through education:
Their documented passage begins with Jim Robinson, Michelle Obama’s great-great-grandfather, who was born about 1850 and lived as a slave, at least until the Civil War, on the sprawling rice plantation. Records show he remained on the estate after the war, working as a sharecropper and living in the old slave quarters with his wife, Louiser, and their children. He could neither read nor write, according to the 1880 census.
Robinson would be the last illiterate branch of Michelle Obama’s family tree.
Census records show each generation of Robinsons became more educated than the last, with Michelle Obama eventually earning degrees from Princeton University and Harvard Law School. Her older brother, Craig, also earned an Ivy League education. SOURCE
For most of us not born into great material means, education has been the pathway to greater economic freedom. It is my hope that we don’t get too caught up in where she’s come from but how, with the steadfast support of her family, Michelle Obama completed college at Princeton University, graduated from Harvard Law school, became a lawyer and is now anchoring the future first family of the United States of America. Our most disenfranchised young people need both inspiration and step-by-step guidance to move away from hopelessness toward excellence.

The emphasis on Mrs. Obama’s slave ancestry can be taken to mean any number of things.
For me, it means a chance to reflect on the incredible resilience of a people who achieved so very much in their own right; managing in a way – that I will never understand but fully appreciate and am awed and humbled by – to preserve an internal dignity when so much in their external environment taught them to think that they were lesser beings. In insisting on the right to be educated and instilling the value of a good education in successive generations, they truly paved the way for us to move upwards and onwards.
As a thankful and proud descendant of enslaved people, myself, to me they are the ultimate expression of the phrase “Yes, we can!”
It is no bad thing to be reminded of this, partly because often when the mainstream media starts to talk about Black people’s “slave past” it’s often done in a way that would suggest that we have something to be ashamed of. I’ve seen it when there’s been all this nonsense about Mr. Obama’s success meaning we’re now (allegedly) living in a “post racial” world, whatever that means, and then, for some illogical reason, unfavourably comparing, Mrs. Obama’s slave ancestry with her husband’s lack of one, as if in some way he’s superior to her because of this!!
The irony is that Mrs. Obama clearly has resilience, drive, patience, tenacity, determination and endurance, all qualities that her ancestors would have possessed in abundance, and it is truly fitting that she has used all that and much, much more to help steer her (clearly appreciative) husband right to the very top!

You know I don’t know what it should mean. Of all the people who should be ashamed about slavery, its not Black people. I’m torn. On one hand it is an extraordinary journey from slavery to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and then on the other hand, should this journey have taken this long?
PPl remember slavery, but what about reconstruction and its aftermath. There was a time when at least one state legislature was majority African American and then came the roll back that eventually ended with Jim Crow.
But yes, education has been the stepping stone for many of us. We can look in our own families at the branches where someone went to college versus the branches where someone dropped out or never went.

I don’t know what their angle is yet. But, considering that Michelle Obama isn’t an immigrant, it was like, DUH – she’s has ancestors who were slaves?
Who’d a thunk it.
But, let them knock themselves out.
It IS a testament to a strong people. To a people who knew the way up was through books, and it is the quintessential BLACK American story.

I would correct Dee.
President-Elect Obama does indeed have an ancestry linked to America’s Original Sin.
He’s descended from SLAVE OWNERS.
Oh, how I LMAO when THAT was revealed.
As Chris Matthews said of Obama, ‘ we like him because he has none of that ‘ bad stuff” ‘ – you know, slavery, Jim Crow, the whole ‘ 400 years of oppression’ thing.
So, they thought they were slick as grease..
But, that’s the thing about America’s Original Sin…it creeps up on you and bites you on the ass when you least expected.
So yeah, the first Black President’s familial connection to slavery is through SLAVE OWNERS.
I still cracked up as I typed this.

O Kay…. name an African American in this country who don’t have a connection with a slave or two in their ancestry… Get a life. This woman is fantastic, She is a classic black woman. I want to be her when I grow up.

When I think of Mrs. Obama’s slave ancestry and what it means today, I think of the strength, perservence and endurance that our ancestors had during a difficult time in our country’s history.
Today it should mean that African-American people truly can live out the American dream. No more excuses for those who didn’t have a positive vision for their lives.
We must pull from the strength of our ancestors to find our purpose and live our lives fully. We only come this way once, so we are charged to make a difference. What milestones will we achieve? What legacy will we leave?
Mrs. Obama’s slave ancestry is to serve as a reminder that we all come from bold, brave and determined people who are shouting in heaven that this day has come. The day that an African-American woman, a descendant of slaves will serve as first lady of the United States of America, joined by her husband, the son of an African man, and a Caucasian woman, President-elect Barack Obama. We could have never dreamed this if we tried.
I’m grateful for this time in our history. Let us never forget the sacrifice of our ancestors and many others who helped us get to this point.

I have never understood why I should feel any shame that I descended from people who were slaves.
I graduated from college with honors, have a great career and make a positive contribution to the world around me.
In my opinion, at least a part of my success comes from the strength that my fore-bearers possessed that allowed them to endure slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow and other difficulties and still create the circumstances that have allowed me to achieve as I have done.
I feel only love, pride and the utmost gratitude for my slave ancestors.

The way our history is written in this country being the a descendents of Slaves, slave owners, Native Americans and free people of color never once made me feel that I was less than. But for many it has been a determining factor as of who or what they are.
While our ancestors toiled and worked in the fields to create wealth for those who had enslaved them, they also built this country. Even though they were denied the basic rights that those living in this country enjoyed. One thing for certain is that I and other descendents have earned the right to sit at the table. For many of us we’ve been Americans only when it’s been convenient for others to do so especially at times of crisis.
She is a descendant of Slaves and I know they are most proud, her husband is also one half of a descendent of ancestors whose country was colonized. Colonialism and slavery both shared a common bound, there main purpose was to enrich the lives of those who felt they were some how superior to those that they had oppressed within their own countries. People as resources and natural resources were exploited to create wealth for those who had enslaved the African people through colonialism.

Michelle Obama’s ancestry makes her and us poor prouder that indeed, from scratch, we could go far with determination and education. People should stop emphasizing her ancesty in a negative manner; in the first place slaves were victims and it is not something to be ashamed of.

So what her ancestors were slaves? She was chosen by a person who has no slavery ancestory to be his wife and he became president of the US. So what? You guys read too much into this type of stuff. The bottom line is Barack loves her. She is his woman. They are a package deal. She aint going nowhere. Stop making so much out of nothing.

“It is my hope that we don’t get too caught up in where she’s come from but how…”
I’m not sure I’d agree with this perspective.
Although her family was uprooted from adversity through education, the significance of “where she’s come from” is extremely important to me and so many other African-American women.
It’s that history and the history of our foremothers which makes it possible for us to appreciate our accomplishments today. Our characters have been molded from the history of the slave woman. Our ability to persevere and carry the community on our shoulders comes from the strength we saw in our parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and so on.
Let us also remember those who lived through the institution of slavery, as the apple does not fall far from the tree.

Mthomas said it best. SO WHAT!! Why is this an issue? Are we now discovering that as an African American woman that she is a descendant of a slave? The man whose ancestors were on the other side of slavery has chosen her to be in his wife, now she will be living in the White House. Is she now expected to apologize for being black and educated? Everyone wants their children to have better lives and education than they had…she has done her ancestors, Jim Robinson, and all who came before him proud. She is educated, intelligent, smart and has endured a lot to help steer her husband to the highest position in the country. She is the ipidemy of greatness and what every black woman should aspire to be.

It means, survival of the fittest. Only the strong were able to make the passage in inhuman conditions to be enslaved in America.
It, also, highlights that America, at least about 40% of them, may be ready to come to terms with their bestiality. The masters sired many children by raping those slaves and then turned around and enslaved his own children!!!
Boy! Taklking about sexual harassment! Their is not a superlative that would capture what was going on. I know it was more than picking cotton.
It is amazing Black American have remained loyal to such a dastardly country.

I love what it means about the American way of life, because it shows that no matter what your background is or how poor you are,With the right education and work, all dreams can come true! Only in America, lets keep the America Dream alive for all people of all cultures.
Maybe it is time for the first lady to get a pay check,it would start to show more respect to all women in America.

It was Barach Obama who was elected to the presidency not Michelle.
In the past I empathized with those of the African American persuasion, however it’s getting old.
I never owned a slave, nor did any of my ancestors. They were all immigrants who had to fight their way to the top (or in my case middle). I give ANYONE credit who improves their life or lifestyle whether they are Irish Americans, Italian Americans, Jewish Americans etc.
Please stop what happened over 100 years ago and let’s live for TODAY and our future.

Oh give me a break!!! She is NO different than probably 75 percent of the other African American people in this country. One more thing that will no doubt not be substantiated with hard proof. Much like her feel good story of sitting on daddys lap (mathematically at the age of 15 or 16) watching the Olympics.
These people both make me SICK
Race card, race card, race card, every flipping day. Is this what we are reduced to listening to and referring to for the next 3 year or so?
This guy and his wife are “smarmy” – disgusting, can’t believe a word either one of them say.
Too bad that his followers that are now finally waking up to reality didn’t see them for the scum they are BEFORE they jumped on the bandwagon of “history being made”
Good lord – I just lost my breakfast

While any truthful historian will tell you that all immigrant populations, especially the Irish and Italians, were severely discriminated against and were called and treated like n*****s when they first arrived on American soil, they were eventually able to assimilate in to the overall white Anglo-Saxon population because of their skin color.Through intermarriage (such as Italians marrying Irish) the ethnic distinctions became a little blurred,.and what is now referred to as “white” in America is often a mixture of many different ethnic backgrounds including some hidden black at times. It is silly to compare the options and privileges many whites have to those available to POC. People who start behind the line should be commended when they win the contest. All people should be commended for hard work. However, if I have to be exceptional to succeed and you only have to be mediocre to average to achieve the same level of success, then something is wrong with the picture.
@SUE
If pointing out obvious truths is playing the race card then feel free to deal me and many others a hand of spades. Not every situation where something unfair or or unjust happens is racially motivated. But the difference between blacks and whites even now is that whites do not ever have to wonder in 9.5 out of 10 situations if they are being treated unfairly because of their race. POC’s always have to wonder. When we don’t have to ever wonder anymore, the race card will no longer be needed.
