I couldn’t resist following SjP’s “Picture Day, 1976” with my own “Picture Day, 1982.”
The National Enquirer released an exclusive story, featuring a picture of 18-year old
Michelle Robinson seated in a wicker chair with her prom date standing close by. Michelle and her date, David Upchurch, attended the prom at Whitney M. Young High School in Chicago.
The National Enquirer heads this story with “Michelle Obama First Love,” and claims Upchurch is the first ex-boyfriend to speak out.
I don’t know about you, but I give Upchurch the side-eye for not remembering whether the night ended with a kiss or not. Either things weren’t that serious or Upchurch was snubbed at the door. According to the article, he’s currently a divorced father of three working as a customer service representative.

Oh God… do I remember prom? That’s like asking do I remember having my first child. LOL! Prom is one of those milestone landmarks in life.
Both times, I went with folks who were already out of high school. The first fella (Junior Prom) was a sweet guy who graduated high school and stopped there. The second fella was my first love (Senior Prom) who was attending Howard University with dreams of becoming a scientist (chemist). From what I can tell, he’s done very well with his dreams (altho he married a real witch. hehe)
My mom still has the prom pictures (even the 8th grade dance pictures) displayed in her house! Unfortunately, none feature wicker chairs. I was born in 1971 and just missed the Era of Wicker.

David Upchurch has been like family to my husband for the last 12 years.
And just so you all know, I respect him for saying he didnt remember if the night ended with a kiss.
For one, he is not the person who gave the picture to the national enquirer.
And I respect him for not telling the whole world intimate details about Michelle Obama’s business. I think Barack is grateful that Dave did not disrespect Michelle. She is a good woman. Thats all the world needs to know

Welcome, Tina. Of course, including a note about the possible “kiss on the porch” was added in jest as the article made a point to mention that detail.
I certainly hope you’re not offended. Public exposure is often the unfortunate price for fame (and for being associated with the famous). Barack Obama, along with Michelle, made history. We are oh-so-proud of that here, which is why we watch the media for news about Michelle.

I was not offended. Neither is he. He is proud to have known her. He knows he lost out on a wonderful lady. Boys will be boys. You live and you learn.
I do have to say, that was a really nice looking prom picture. Michelle looked so beautiful in that dress. And Dave didnt look so bad himself.
It’s kinda weird for Dave to have this kind of exposure to the public, but he
knows that it is the price he has to pay for knowing Michelle. He is so proud of her and Barack. They have a beautiful family.
I dont know about Dave, but my husband cried when Barack won. That
was a very proud moment for him.

@Tina: I agree… That was quite a nice prom picture. Michelle is so tall – her legs go on forever. LOL
Every once in a while, I hear perfectly sane adults lament about wanting to be famous. I don’t think anybody is truly prepared for the burden of suddenly falling into the public spotlight. Then along comes ordinary folk (like me, like Dave, and like most of the people here) who stumble into the spotlight by accident (and don’t get the “famous” paycheck to help offset the sudden public scrutiny LOL).

Barack Obama is quite a catch! Who wouldn’t thank their lucky stars to end up with a man like him? He is a very good man. And she has 2 beautiful children too. What a life. I wouldnt want it any other way. I know it may be difficult at times, but I’m sure that Michelle and Barack can overcome anything together.
