Folks I could write about 15,000 words about this story from Women’s Wear Daily, but I won’t because sometimes Chicanery and Foolishness speaks for itself.

The Black Artists Association is taking her to task for not wearing anything by an African American designer. Cofounder Amnau Eele said Wednesday she will make a formal appeal to the First Lady’s office on behalf of the BAA. “It’s fine and good if you want to be all ‘Kumbaya’ and ‘We Are the World’ by representing all different countries. But if you are going to have Isabel Toledo do the inauguration dress, and Jason Wu do the evening gown, why not have Kevan Hall, B Michael, Stephen Burrows or any of the other black designers do something too?” Eele said.

Then Women’s Wear Daily threw in the kicker:

Asked if perhaps the First Lady isn’t looking at the world colorlessly, Eele said, “It’s one thing to look at the world without color but she had seven slots to wear designer clothes. Why wasn’t she wearing the clothes of a black designer? That was our moment.”

Funny. I thought it was HER moment after sacrificing her life and the lives of her children to allow her husband to run for and win the White House. I listened to the inagural speeches and did not hear anything about the INAUGURATION being a moment for Black fashion designers. I’m going to stop right there, but just let that marinate for a moment. “That was OUR moment!” <sarcasm>They sound like they are a group of easy to work with people </sarcasm>

can’t win. be happy that they triumphed and are in the white house and that michelle isnt parading around like a prima donna. her outfits rock….black designer or not….i wonder how many women in the baa wear ‘african designers’……foolish!!

  2. urbanbydesign

It looks like this organization took their opportunity to get their five minutes, at the expense of the First Lady. There are far more dignified ways to make one’s point. Truthfully, after moving three times in the past few weeks, and enduring a long campaign, I think Mrs. Obama is entitled to wear whatever she wants. Agreed, it was her moment.

  3. Les

“But if you are going to have Isabel Toledo do the inauguration dress, and Jason Wu do the evening gown, why not have Kevan Hall, B Michael, Stephen Burrows or any of the other black designers do something too?”

Do something where? There was the day dress and the ball gown. Whatever, there will always be Uncle Ruckus’ and Klansman.

  4. mona31

i imagine that kind of attitude won’t get their calls returned by the first lady’s office anytime soon. sure it would have been nice to see her in something by a black designer but to cop that kind of attitude over it publicly is stupid, and reflects far worse on ms. eele and her organization than on mrs. obama.

  5. Layo G

OMG, this is silly…since when did Michelle Obama have to hold the weight of every black enterprise, business, association etc… on her shoulders

didn’t we elect Obama because we are tired of all the classifications!!

  6. Josephine

I believe that Sasha and Malia Obama’s dresses that were worn on Election Night (November 4, 2009) were designed and prepared by African American women desingers.

Perhaps this could be verified and this would appropriately satisfy the BAA.

  7. Dee

Thank you for that information, Josephine. If correct, I wonder who the designers were.

If I were Ms. Eele, I wouldn’t bother with the formal appeal to the First Lady’s office; there are all kinds of ways of getting yourself/the organisation that you represent onto the radar, but I’d say the “Kumbaya” comments were most certainly not the way to go about it.

  8. Lili

Barack and Michelle Obama are the President and First Lady of the United States, not the Black United States. Moreover, fashion is a very individual matter, one of personal taste. It may be that the current Black fashion designers are not producing anything that specifically appeals to Mrs. Obama. She should not be required to wear the clothes of any designer simply because of his or her color.

By the way, I’ve noted on this site before that the designers she has patronized are either immigrants or men and women of immigrant ancestry. Maria Pinto, Isabel Toledo, Jason Wu, Thakoon Panichgul, and Narciso Rodriguez all have names that sound foreign, but they are all American citizens. That gives me pleasure. Mrs. Obama does, I think, have a responsibility to promote American design, and so far, I think she’s done an admirably good job of it, one that makes a nod to the diversity of this vast country. And perhaps she doesn’t need to seek out Black designers precisely BECAUSE she is Black herself. The sight of a Black American wearing the designs of a Hispanic or Asian-American represents diversity in and of itself.

  9. Aminah

My Mommi taught us never to discuss family business in the street & I offer this same advise to the BAA. Perhaps it would have been better if they would have developed some special designs for the First Lady and contacted her stylist. You get more bears with honey than…

  10. Jazzlyn Wheeler

    GOODNESS,

why can’t they just be happy for the new first lady, I mean the choices were beautiful regardless. Did they ever think that her selections of choice were her favorites, that who designed it was not a factor. This is supposed to be a wonderful experience and time for our country, and they just had to find something wrong. Maybe the BAA needs to evaluate themselves and see that apparently there is something wrong on their part, that they are taking away from The First Lady and her time of happiness with this nonsense…

  11. Gordon Gartrell

I agree with Amnua. I have a shirt I would love to Michelle to wear.

  12. C J

This is really ridiculous. With everything that is going on in this country and this world, if all they are concerned about is appealing to the First Lady’s office about her wardrobe choice why didn’t they appeal before the inauguration. She didn’t choose her wardrobe b/c a certain person designed it. She picked what she liked and she looked beautiful. So please stop with the pety stuff. She’ s been First Lady 4 days. She has 4 years to wear whoever and whatever she wants!

  13. While many of us here want Michelle to wear Black designers, Black designers have to keep themselves in the game by knowing that MIchelle Obama CANNOT be seen in ‘edgy’ stuff. She can be seen in stylish and contemporary, but not ‘edgy’. That it has to have a hip, but conservative twist.

I love Tracy Reese, but I could only pick a handful of her things that I could see on Michelle Obama.

I think some of the Black tailors have a better chance with President Obama.

  14. admin

Rikyrah they may have been more persuasive if they had sounded “disappointed” instead of entitled. “It was OUR day!”

For example I would have spun that they were disappointed and then shown off the various fashions from Black designers that were available. Not just names, but actual sketches and dresses.

  15. Kelly

I’m sure that she plans to wear black designers along with the others. She is not obligated to do anything. She does not owe black designers anything. The funny part it is that she seems like the type to support black designers and I bet she plans on wearing (just my guess) black designers but they need to be patient. They have the “NERVE” to approach her. BLACK PEOPLE!!!

  16. I think it is important to remember that the Black designers themselves did NOT say this – only Ms. Eele did. Her premature cheap shot will now be a pain in the ass for any black designer that DOES dress the First Lady because they will be asked about her comments. For all we know they have been submitting sketches to the First Lady all along and their turn hasn’t come up yet.

Also @Rikyrah” There are all kinds of Black designers with different aesthetics – not just “edgy” and Tracy Reese is not the only one.

  17. JoJo

Oh how silly. Michelle should wear whatever outfit she feels comfortable in. She looked fabulous on Inauguration Day. Can’t people just be happy for her?

  18. Anar

Well, it was Michelle and Barak Obama’s moment not because they are black but because they are most qualified for the job they applied for. Make yourself as qualified designers and she will pick you. You can’t just claim something because you happen to be black. especially with a first lady who obviously can’t be racially biased. Stand out with your work rather than with your words.

  19. admin

@Gordon Gartrell I just noticed your comment. If that is really you, we’re honored

  20. I agree it was Michelle’s moment to be beautiful and wear what made her feel most beautiful. This is ridiculous. As a black woman it would have been lovely to see something by a black designer, but just just because it was a black designer. I’d must rather see the right design for her for the moment. She is America’s First Lady not Black America’s First Lady.

  21. kellys22

Who is this lady? I have never heard of her or her Association. Attention seeker much…….

Mrs. O has made amazingly great decisions. Haters will always hate.

  22. Tina, NC

I think if she had won a black designer white people would say she is promoting black people. She wore a political statement by touching all the powerful voting blocks and the ones that are not offensive to the voting majority

  23. misa

I would like to have seen her pick at least one outfit by a black designer.

  24. Char'den

Seems to me Michelle Obama has at least four years of wearing clothes that will get a lot of publicity. Black was already represent on that day. I thought other races needed a shine as well. Mr. Obama is not the president of black America. They must represent the interests of us all. If I were Mrs. O, I would tear that letter to shreads and mail the pieces back to them. They would get the message that I will not be a puppet.

  25. iman

Since we’re all about black loyalty, I’d love to know how many black models these designers employ?

  26. Suzanne

Honestly!!! Get over it!!! They are not in office for black people only. They are there for ALL AMERICANS! I agree with ADMIN’s comment:
“they may have been more persuasive if they had sounded “disappointed” instead of entitled. “It was OUR day!”

  27. VuduChile

Does anyone have contact info for the BAA. I did a google search but didn’t find anything. I want to let them know that they need to STFU, because I have not problem with what First Lady Obama (man, it feels good to type that;-). wore and from what I’ve read on this and other blogs neither did anyone else.

I think we should let the BAA know that they don’t speak for all of us.

  28. SuJay

The BAA is absolutely correct!!! As first lady, Michelle Obama has the opportunity/obligation to represent the talents of all American artists, including Black Americans.

  29. Ann Morgan

The first Lady can wear whatever she wants,,,,who does elle think she is? The Obama family is not just the black americans presidential family, they our the representative of all Americans……….ALL, not Black Americans

  30. Ann

I would very much like to see Michelle wearing sleeker clothers that fit her body style better, most of what she wears makes her look big and gawky, she is not…….I would like to see her stand straight and tall, not with her shoulders slumped forward………..she should be very proud of her height……….

  31. Arch

Umm… Is the Black Artists Association a real organization? I can’t find it online. And the only links to Ms Eele are bizarre to say the least- apparently she and her brother call themselves “Twins”, believed that they predicted the 9/11 attacks 6 months before they happened, and sued NBC because they had predicted something on Heroes (the suit was thrown out). Has anyone actually verified to ensure that these people aren’t nutjobs out for some media attention?

  32. netrace

Simple answer to this. The claims made by The Black Artists Association are racist. Too bad we can’t move past this.

  33. Realtruth

I am not interested in fashion, but it looks like the Obama’s is trying to play up to White America. It seems he just want to be in charge but not bring along Black America. I am sure H. Clinton would be look out for women more then Obama is looking out for Blacks. He is just another Black who want to be white in lieu of half black. He is only the first Black President in color and not in mind, body and soul.

  34. Antoinette

Like an earlier poster, I couldn’t find a Web site for the Black Artists Association either. Looks like the complaining designer pulled a fast one on Women’s Wear Daily. Where the Obamas are concerned, the media are willing to soak up and report every innuendo, slur, and complaint.

  35. Dee

Arch you raise an interesting point. Who are the BAA? Do they really even exist? Would be good to find out.

Netrace, I’m not at all sure of what you’re referring to; this organisation hasn’t made any claims racist or otherwise. The co-founder has simply voiced her opinion, which hasn’t included – as far as I know, and please correct me if I’m wrong – anything along the lines that the First Lady should dress in clothes designed only by Black designers. Have you seen something that no one else has…?

  36. I found that the first lady looked like a first lady. Stop your griping there are other days and other needs to come up. Get a grip and stop being babies.

  37. As an African American, an artist, a woman and well, just me, I find this stuff ludicrous. To continue to paint every little thing the Obama family does or does not do with the hue of one’s skin or cultural makeup is so limiting. I know I am not alone in believing that we all need to move toward a major paradigm shift that allows a fine artist or designer or actor or poet or President who is of color and African descent to be defined as a fine artist or designer or actor or poet or President who is Black NOT a Black fine artist or Black designer or Black actor or Black poet or Black President. Now, there may be some of you who don’t understand the difference, but give it some thought, because there is a huge one. President Obama is/will be a good President for this country, because he is of good character, extremely smart, has ethics, leadership qualities, family values and a wonderful, beautiful; intelligent wife, without whom we would not have him as President. The fact that they are Americans of African descent is just icing on the cake. BTW, the so-called Black Artists Association is not known to any artists I know. Who ever they are don’t assume they are speaking for anyone besides the one person who said it.

  38. She has worn black designers in the past and I’m sure she will continue to so.

  39. l price

I hate Michelle Ball dress I agree she should wear some black designers why not? someone needs to do her hair better and teach her how to dress better.

  40. I don’t think there’s any reason to over react to BAA’s comments about Michelle Obama’s wardrobe. Mrs. Obama is now a public figure and now part of American history- she’s neither a private citizen or a sacred cow. She will be under the microscope for 4-8 years and beyond and she will be criticized by all kinds of people, those who mean her well and those who want to bring her, and the President, down.

I think BAA’s comments are harmless. As a M.O. supporter, I think she looked wonderful and represented black women extremely well on inauguration day. However, I might ask the same question myself, especially if I were an AA fashion designer seeing Latinos and Asians represented at the inauguration. It’s a simple and quite harmless question.

  41. SMH

The woman was about to see her husband make history and be sworn in as President of the United States, that is an awesome responsibility, in the past few weeks she has moved several times – navigating and coordinating with all that goes into living in a high security environment – no doubtedly nearly tripping over the very necessary security protection at every turn, chances are give the number of nut puppies that came out the woodwork before during and no doubtly after the campagin and victory she is worried about her husband and families safety, trying to be an involved, protective, soft place to land – loving mother to her children – getting them settled in to a new – being supportive to her husband in a time of ‘just a little stress’, attending countless functions and events and always being in the media eye, not to mention the current worsening state of the economy and the country might have her a bit pre-occupied with more than who designed the clothes. Chances are she just wanted to select a clothes she liked, that made her feel good, fit the occassion and was no fuss no muss that she could wear and forget and focus on the moment with out worrying about clothes.

President Obama is POTUS – there is no Black America – there is just America, good bad or otherwise – warts and all. It is not about bringing folks along it is about providing a path that people can follow – forget the entitlement – what is with this looking out for other than providing opportunity. God helps those who help themselves! Stop with the entitlement of being ‘owed’ by virtue of skin color and get busy getting and stay competitive. Put in the sweat equity when the opportunities are available. Clearly always some folks would rather whine and complain and hate than celebrate and move forward – hope the BAA enjoyed their 15 minutes of fame/shame as spoiled petulant whiners.

  42. NYNOIR

Dr. King longed for the day when a man will not be judged by the color of his skin. Does BAA share the dream that a designer will not be judged by the color of her skin? Here’s three things that BAA members can do:

    *Make something worth wearing
    *Deliver ontime
*Make a PROFESSIONAL pitch to Mrs. O’s team

If you’ve already made the 3 items above, then it’s only a matter of time before Mrs. O. will be “representing” in one of your WORKS OF ART. If you haven’t done the three things above, Well – you should not be talking.

  43. sahpau

People let’s be honest here… before speeking of Mrs Obama, what about all those black artists, politicians, TV moguls? Thinking Mrs. C. Rice, Mrs Aretha Franklin (was her hat by a black designer?), thinking about all the talk show stars, actors, singers… ect…
Some of the black designer could have offered to make an outfit.(free of course).. that would have been an elegant way to get in the White House?

  44. Mariama

I thought that Ms. Eele’s response was totally inappropriate and disrespectful. I think that there is something else that lies behind this response. This woman is envious of Michelle – . Even if there is substance to what she is saying, I would encourage Michelle not to wear anything Ms. Eele has produced because of the vitriol spewed forth.

There is oftentimes tension and animousity between Africans and African Americans. Some Africans carry very racist attitudes towardrs African Americans. I have the feeling that Ms. Eele wanted to spoil Mrs. Obama’s moment.

There are so many people who could care less about the plight of African Americans – in fact they’ve sided with our oppressors- why then should Mrs. Obama patronize Mrs. Eele’s fashion digs?

  45. Joi

I think that people should lay off of Michelle she picks what she likes and that is all that matters. If she likes it Barrack probably loves it and just because we have a black first lady and half black first president doesn’t mean everything has to be black come on. I hope that the black community doesn’t think that they are going to just start cutting us breaks? Please black people lets just be happy that we have a black first lady and a half black president. JUST CHILL!
