Not every MOW reader was enraptured with some of the concepts in the book “Go Tell Michelle” by Barbara Seals Nevergold and Peggy Brooks-Bertram, who are co-founders of the Uncrowned Queens Institute for Research and Education on Women at the University at Buffalo in New York.which Bridget posted about on Monday in a post called “Letters to Michelle“. At first I didn’t understand one of the comments about colorism, now that I have listened to the interview on National Public Radio, I understand.
Brooks-Bertram says that the themes that emerged in the book were twofold — sweet and gentle — but also those that “resonate and rise up” in a way they didn’t expect.
“One of those themes has to do with the issue of the intraracial color line — and women who very clearly point out that it was very important for them that Michelle Obama was a recognizably black woman for example,” Brooks-Bertram says. “That she wasn’t light-skinned with blue eyes and still classified as black, but rather she was a black woman and that it gave them a whole new feeling about their own lives. I really thought that it was powerful, because that tends to be a subject that we don’t go towards so readily because it has such deep pain associated with it.”
Also, through the letters, many of the women seemed to be saying that the world might see them through a new lens because of Michelle Obama.
“This is particularly for women who are dark-skinned women who thought, ‘Oh my goodness.’ Like one woman who said: ‘I now believe I can bring my black babies into this world,’ ” Brooks-Bertram says. National Public Radio.
Hmm lots of projection going on. You needed Michelle Obama to believe you can bring “Black babies” into the world? Maybe this is an unfair analysis since they only picked out a few letters. I’m sorry, but this book seems a bit creepy. Is it just me? It’s more about US than it is about Michelle Obama.
If I could tell Michelle Obama anything I would say “DO YOU!” Everybody, including myself, is projecting right now and there is no way Michelle Obama can be what everyone wants her to be. We need to be the people we want to be and see ourselves the way we want to see ourselves. We need to do some work on ourselves. Yes we can…fix our own “issues” without Michelle Obama.

In regards to your last Paragraph:
“Speak on it!!”
It’s understandable where the projection comes from and why, I just hope that they learn as you said to “Do you”.

The line – and the belief – “I now believe I can bring my black babies into this world,” is over the top and frankly, ridiculous. I agree there is no way Michelle Obama can be what everyone wants her to be, but that statement trivializes what I think is a valid point – dark-skinned women in particular being pleased that Michelle Obama is recognizably black.
I don’t see anything wrong with pointing it out. After all, look at any magazine stand today. Every woman’s magazine cover features a white woman unless she is a superstar like Beyonce, Halle or Rihanna. A “regular” or up and coming white star can get a cover but where is Kerry Washington for example? The only time you see darker black women on a cover that is not Essence, her butt is hanging out from one of the men’s magazines.
By and large, prominent Black men (historically and presently) have married lighter-skinned women. Academic studies over the years, beginning in the early 20th century, bare this out so people who ignore this or criticize those who mention it are being disingenuous. We know that a darker-skinned educated, professional woman like Michelle is often one of the 43% of never married black women we hear so much about, so she stands out.

I listened to this story on NPR with tears running down my eyes because I so love and admire Michelle Obama. Living in the ultimate swing state (OH), I have had the priviledge of meeting both Barack and Michelle as an early volunteer and unapologetic supporter and both are as great in person as they appear in public.
For those of us who so admire Michelle, can we consider the idea of forming local Michelle-O Clubs through which we could not only defend her when needed but also help her promote the agenda she has identified to support her husbands presdency? I wonder if there is interest for this out there for such activism – in addition to all our admiration

Gina,
I’d encourage you to take a look at the book if you ever get a chance. Im one of the authors, and in fact my letter said exactly your sentiment, in essence, “Do You”. I urged her to remember that in this moment when everyone has expectations, she is finally free! She does not need to be beholden to any standard because she IS the MOLD, so there are no burdens. Its about seeing it from a new angle. I’m a young, professional with no children, so my perspective differs from that of the 74 year old grandmother who spoke of ancestors and slavery. That is part of my history, but its not my reference point, so I didn’t speak on it. It doesn’t make it any less valid. This book is simply an amalgamation of tons of different perspectives. It shows how varied the Black female voice really is. The media’s choice (NPR excerpts, CNN, blogs, etc) to focus on the more expected voices of Black women is typical. Not bad, just typical. Please don’t dismiss an entire book that was genuinely conceived of from a simple question of “what would you tell michelle obama in this moment?” Creepy? C’mon. Ummm…aren’t we all posting right now to a site called “Michelle Obama Watch”…that can’t be categorized as ‘normal’.
