Juan Williams again baselessly attacked Michelle Obama, claiming “her instinct is to start with this ‘blame America’ … stuff”

During the January 26 edition of Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor, NPR news analyst and Fox News political contributor Juan Williams again baselessly attacked first lady Michelle Obama, claiming that “her instinct is to start with this ‘blame America’ … stuff.” Williams asserted that “{i}f you think about liabilities for President {Barack} Obama that are close to him — {Vice President} Joe Biden’s up there — but Michelle Obama’s right there.” Williams continued: “{S}he’s got this Stokely Carmichael-in-a-designer-dress thing going. If she starts talking, as {Townhall Magazine contributor and Weekly Standard contributing blogger} Mary Katharine {Ham} suggested, her instinct is to start with this ‘blame America,’ you know, ‘I’m the victim.’ If that stuff starts to come out, people will go bananas, and she’ll go from being the new Jackie O to being something of an albatross.”

Williams provided no evidence for the claims that Michelle Obama’s “instinct” is to “blame America” or be “the victim,” nor did he provide examples of her having “this Stokely Carmichael-in-a-designer-dress thing going.” Additionally, Williams did not provide any evidence that she could be a “liabilit{y}” or an “albatross” for Obama. Ham also smeared Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, saying of Michelle Obama: “{S}he’s got to not drop sound bites like she did during the campaign that were not helpful to her husband, because, frankly, if you want to be an unpleasant, heavy-handed first lady, you’re going to — well, you’ll end up like Hillary Clinton.”

As Media Matters for America documented, Williams previously claimed that Michelle Obama sometimes uses “this kind of militant anger.” During the August 25, 2008, edition of Fox News’ America’s Newsroom, referring to Michelle Obama’s then-upcoming speech at the Democratic National Convention, Williams claimed: “Well, she’s got to be herself, but I do not think she can go for it all out in terms of this kind of militant anger that she sometimes uses, you know. She can be, it seems, rather cynical or dismissive of people,” adding, “I don’t think she wants to get anywhere near the race issue, anywhere near the militance issue.” Williams gave no examples of what he claimed to be “this kind of militant anger” that Michelle Obama “sometimes uses.”

Again how pathetic and lame are they? Stokley Charmicheal? No one under their 30’s has any idea who he is or why the two draw the comparison. Juan Williams is doing as he always does. Not two months ago he was crying about about how great it was to see michelle up on stage now shes an angry black women again. If shes not patriotic shes too strong if shes too strong shes angry, lame. The fact is america is struggling more with a black first lady than we are with a black president. How to define Michelle, they compare her to the innocent white women of the past who arent nearly as ambitious or educated or the angry black people of the past who have scared white people shitless. Fact is Michelle is the modern day black woman. educated proud god fearing loving family devoted. Wake up people your stigmas and stereotypes are being destroyed infront of your eyes

  2. Tonya

I figured Michelle would bear the brunt of stereotypical/hateful remarks. She is a visibly black woman. She obviously carries herself with grace and dignity. She did not grow up in the cliche single parent home. She is highly educated. She is married with children born into wedlock.

The conservatives are twitching–because they don’t know what to do with themselves, The First Lady is destroying stereotypes, while their own party upheld the very thing they are always trying lay on the feet of black women/people (ie Briston’s oow pregnancy, her brother’s criminal/drug history, etc).

It’s all rather hilarious. I have never paid attention to Juan Williams, anyway. I have watched him a few times on Fox, and he seems to play up his white co-hosts. He is a wimp, and only going after the First Lady, because he knows he can get away with bashing a black woman.

    Jerk.

  3. thebewilderness

Funny. My response, when he said that, was YES YES! Let it be true!
Civil rights. Not just for old hippies to talk about any more.

  4. Lynne

Juan Williams is a pus-filled sore. He’s just filthy bacteria.

  5. Lyric

Tonya, I agree with everything you’ve outlined. In addition, First Lady Michelle Obama is on the verge of becoming a style icon—yet another thing that has the conservatives in a frenzy. A visibly black, Ivy League educated woman without the requisite pathologies, poised to shake up the foundation of an aesthetic that proclaims that “visibly black” black women cannot be beautiful, desirable and—most discomforting for the right-wing—cherished, lauded and admired? First Lady Michelle Obama poses a challenge to the hegemony of white supremacy. For a visibly black woman to achieve the position of First Lady with all of the symbolic and cultural “baggage” that comes with that terrain necessitates a relentless attack on the part of conservatives to insure that white supremacy holds sway. As ridiculous as it sounds, I anticipate that our First Lady will soon be “de-blackened” somehow. (Note that this trend is already underway with the “WeeMichelles”.) The conservatives will attempt to distance her from the masses of black women by redefining her “troublesome” blackness, in order to make her more palatable and less threatening to white supremacy.

  6. Kelly

I agree with Lyric….You notice that the girls just had to have a concert with the Jonas Brothers. They are not going to give the brothers a second look probably. I dont know. Nothing against the Jonas Brothers but they are truly suburban girls unlike Mommy and her “hood” roots…I think that it is disgusting what Juan Williams said…It is very dangerous for him to even put anything out there like that. And if you notice Bill O’Reilly actually defended her a little and said that he does not believe that she woud say those things while Juan was yelling “well if she brings that black stuff up people will go bananas”. I cannot believe a black man would say such things on TV. A lot of people have a problem with a visually black image on TV. Some non-black men are actually saying that she is attractive But they are a package deal. She is his rock.

  7. Kelly

The conservatives will attempt to distance her from the masses of black women by redefining her “troublesome” blackness, in order to make her more palatable and less threatening to white supremacy.

Transformation is inevitable…I hope that she “stays black” as she tranforms herself. If they keep messing with her, she might cut her hair into an afro and wear Disheki (sp) dresses around the white house…LOL

  8. Lyric

The trend that I’m referencing in terms of the “WeeMichelles” has nothing to do with the Jonas Brothers. What I’m alluding to is the recent attempt of white posters on certain blogs to label the “WeeMichelles” as “biracial” when they are clearly little black girls. In the same way that Malia and Sasha are being “de-blackened”, the mainstream media and conservatives at large will attempt a similar “de-blackening” of Michelle Obama.

  9. Kelly,

Unfortunately, I CAN believe that a black man would make those comments on national TV. I wouldn’t be surprised if some will attempt to scapegoat the first lady if need be (hypothetically, if Obama were to fail on some initiatives).

Juan Williams’s comments don’t surprise me in the least.

  10. Juan Williams is a ‘hater’. Plain and simple. He compared the First Lady to a MAN. He needs a beatdown.

  11. I figured Michelle would bear the brunt of stereotypical/hateful remarks. She is a visibly black woman. She obviously carries herself with grace and dignity. She did not grow up in the cliche single parent home. She is highly educated. She is married with children born into wedlock.

The conservatives are twitching–because they don’t know what to do with themselves, The First Lady is destroying stereotypes,

They really have been crazy, haven’t they? I thought they would settle down after the election, but they’re still crazy. They can’t handle a Black woman, a visibly Black woman in this position. It’s going to be a long 4 years.

They’ve found a Black woman that they can’t dismiss, and they’re terrified.

  12. I’ve read criticisms of the Obama girls liking The Jonas Brothers. I don’t know anything about youth culture, but is there a Black Teen Group that’s comparable? In my day, I had New Edition, and Boyz II Men.

  13. iman

If you think about the myth of the welfare Queen and how that enthused the republican parties in the 80’s and even helped elect Ronald Regan and you compare that with Michelle Obama and her representation of black woman hood, Michelle is tearing apart the foundation of everything they believe. However, it’s not just conservatives that are attacking Michelle. A lot of liberal’s don’t know how to handle her either. It’s as if, being a loving mother and wife is just an act and people are trying there hardest to chip away at it. The fact that Obama publicly adores her makes it even more difficult to swallow.

Also, I think the comparisons to Jackie O are a little ridiculous. Yes, Jackie O had amazing stye and clearly did a great job at raising her children. However, Michelle is her own woman. I believe she will help set the standard for all first ladies to come.

Juan Williams should be ashamed of himself. Who are these black people that allow themselves to go on these shows to basically say all the stuff white people are uncomfortable saying in public?

  14. Aminah

    Osmond,
I agree with almost everything you said. Except the Kwame Toure (Stokeley Carmichael) reference. I’m under 30 and I, as well as many of my peers, know who this brother was. It’s a matter of history. No matter how old you are everyone should be a student of history.

  15. Elle

I despise Bill O’Reilly with a burning passion, and his clone Hannity is right behind him. I cannot mute their big, flapping, biased yaps and offensively pointing fingers fast enough, before rapidly changing channels. The reason O’Reilly’s show is resorting to speculative, trumped-up trash talk is that he has nothing remotely derogatory to report about Michelle or anyone else in the new administration. I hope he loses lots of sleep and lots of viewers over his new dilemma. What a lying tool!

  16. khal02

To Rikyrah…I also don’t understand the criticism of the girls liking the Jonas Brothers. One of the most refreshing things about that Disney concert was that they danced like a 7 and 10 year old, should jumping up and down and screaming. I see too many of our kids dancing inappropriately at a young age because they simulate what too many black musicians project…sex. I liked New Kids on the Block when I was little and I didn’t grow up to date white men.

    As for Juan Williams….boooo.

  17. admin

Rikyrah asked “is there a Black Teen Group that’s comparable? In my day, I had New Edition, and Boyz II Men.”

Heck to the NO! The closest thing is “Pretty Ricky.” There aren’t any Black teen groups singing about anything G rated. The days of New edition and Boyz II men is OVA! So yeah if you want wholesome music for your child to listen to, you are going to be hard pressed to find a Black artist that is currently on the charts. MAY-be Beyonce or Rihianna. You even have to be careful with Chris Brown.

You’re not out of touch with music. Music is out of touch with you!

  18. This a sad pathetic man. I often wonder what does his mother/daughter think of his words?

  19. You know . . . the lengths that folks will go to keep their job. Juan is one of few African Americans with Fox News NPR and he has to play like the other boys do. He’s not allowed to think on his own. He needs a pay check in these tight economic times. Way to go Juan! Throw cheap, pathetic shots at our First Lady, just to stay on payroll. I guess it’s still hard out here for a pimp.

  20. Jonita

Juan Williams is afraid of a woman like Mrs.Obama it’s that simple…

  21. Gina

Juan Williams and others of his ilk are like rabid dogs that need to be put out to pasture. I wish people would stop giving them a platform to speak (i.e. Roland Martin on Tom Joyner Morning Show) and let them stay on their pathetic network Faux News and spew their crap over there. Just contain them on one network and don’t let them venture onto other avenues. As for the weeMichelles liking the Jonas Brothers, there’s nothing wrong with that. My daughter, who’s 12, likes all types of music: One Republic, Taylor Swift, Jordin Sparks. I grew up the same way, listening to Duran Duran, Culture Club, New Edition, Michael Jackson and jazz music (yes, I was one of the rare teens who loved jazz-LOL!) And I married a black man. So enjoying a variety of music doesn’t dictate how you will live your life or who you date.

  22. Kells

Juan Williams needs a beat down. This is probably the most hateful shit said about Michelle cause it’s coming from a so called “brotha”. Sounds to me like he pissed he ain’t half the man Obama is to get and keep a Michelle on his arm. Juan is a lil’ bitch.

As for the babies listening to Jonas Brothers, that’s all my nieces listen to. As someone said, the days of wholesome young black teens singing wholesome songs for a young black audience are long gone. The closest thing out there is Pretty Ricky. They are about the same age as the Jonas Brothers, but their lyrics and behavior on stage is downright porno. The fact is, so much black music that’s supposed to be for a younger audience is as sexual as anything you’ll hear on an R. Kelley record. Apparently, little black girls don’t deserve to hear songs about crushes and hand holding. Little black girls are being told by some 16 year old singer what he wants to do to them in bed. It pisses me off.

And yes, it was nice to see two little black girls dancing appropriately for their ages. I’m sure the President and First Lady don’t allow any “drop it like’s it’s hot” crap to go on in their home. I’ve just seen too many precious little black girls dancing in ways they shouldn’t be.

  23. Elle

Gina, “Faux News,” hahaha. Love it. Perfect name for them.

  24. Kelly

Guys I dont think that there is anything wrong with the Jonas Brothers. I grew up with Duran Duran and all the others as well. Whether they choose black or white men I really dont think Michelle or Barack would care. If it seemed as though I was criticizing their liking the Jonas brothers, I was not.I was just thinking out loud (but posting while doing it). The girls are adorable either way!!

You know, this reminds me of another story that Gina did over at WAOD…the story of Keke Palmer and her trials and tribulations in the music industry. I know she was at the Kids’ Inaugural, as an actress, but if they had meant right by her, she should have been on there as a singer. I’m sad that I’m not totally out of touch. I thought there should be ONE Black singer for our young girls to post on their walls with their youthful crushes.

Isn’t Pretty Ricky the one who was arrested for simulating onstage with an underaged girl?

  26. admin

Rikyrah, We are so old. That was Akon who was video taped on stage simulating a sex act with an underage girl in the Bahamas. Raunchy R&B performers are so hard to distinguish.

  27. I don’t have a problem at all with the weeMichelle’s fascination with the Jonas Brothers. Admittedly, I was a bit surprised at their choice, but tickled nonetheless. This may or may not indicate their future relationship choices but either way, it’s fine with me.

  28. C.

Being the token black mouth piece for the hatefilled republicans is very lucrative business…

Juan williams and his ilk are such miserable & sorry pieces of you know what!

Oh the hilarity and envy of it all! They all thought that was the quickest way to political elevation…then Barack Obama beat them all to it and on his own terms too!

Its funny too when they churn out the so called “black republicans” -What an oxymoron! What utter self loathing…

Michael Steele, Ken Blackwell, Amy Holmes, Armstrong Williams, Tara Wall, Ron Christie, Joe Watkins etc.

How do these guy’s look themselves in the mirror each day?! It’s beyond disgusting, pathetic and sad…

  29. Kelly

If you remember the definition that Malcolm X gave of the House Negro. Juan Williams is the best example… That was very dangerous what he did the other day because there are some whites who love him and the kids but are uncomfortable with her and he just makes things worst…

  30. Kelly

I cant wait until she goes overseas…the foreigners will love her!!!

  31. Town

I don’t think the Obama girls will need the Jonas Brothers to turn them on to interracial relationships if they choose them, since their whole daggone family is interracial. POTUS is biracial, his sister is biracial and married an Asian man so they have an Asian 1st cousin…their uncle Craig is married to a white woman…and that’s just the American side. I think POTUS’ sister Auma may be married to a white man? Sasha and Malia don’t need the Jonas Brothers’ for inspiration.

What’s disturbing is there aren’t any black teen friendly acts. I’d rather have the Obama girls listening to the Jonas Bros. and Hannah Montana than watching Beyonce pop her coochie in the air. It’s one thing if Barack Obama wants to learn the Single Ladies dance so he can get silly with Michelle (the visual of this has me LMAO). It’s an entirely different thing for Sasha & Malia to be grinding and popping their asses in the air like Beyonce. And where are the appropriate black teen groups? The last wholesome one I can remember is Soul For Real.

  32. Kelly

And where are the appropriate black teen groups?

Neo soul ….India Aire, Music and Alicia Keys …I guess….

I dont think that there is anything wrong with them deciding to date white boys…Younger black girls are not going to have many choices because the little black boys are worshiping little white girls and others. The younger generation of young black girls are going to have to be open minded and maybe seeing these girls dating interracially will put other young black girls at ease with interracial dating and there wont be a 70% single rate in black women in the future….

  33. Kells

    Kelley,

What 7 adn 10 year olds do you know who are crazy about India Arie? I barely know 30 year olds who like her boring melancholy music. Just cause it’s positive don’t mean it’s kid friendly. And Alicia Keys is too grown. Little girls like princess like singers. If Beyonce weren’t raunchy, she’d be a bit hit amongst the under 13 set.

Fact is, there’s nothing for little black children to listen to, and it’s sad.

  34. SisRev

Well, I really wish Uncle Juan would allow my big brother, Kwame Ture to rest in peace. He joined the Ancestors in Nov. 1998 after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. I wonder has Uncle Juan had his annual physical in the last 12 months?

That was a very low thing for Uncle Juan to say; the radicals and Pan-Africanists like KT made it possible for sisters and brothers to have jobs like the one he has now. But being the opportunist that he is, he has to grab at something to say, to be seen, trying to be a serious “journalist.”

Unfortunately, there are some people, African and non-African, who don’t like the idea of a strong, attractive, intellient, well-educated, married-then-had-children sister in the public eye. Uncle Juan needs to get over himself. :)

  35. SisRev

Oh and by the way, some of you may recall that Uncle Juan used to work for the Washington Post, I think back in the 1990s. A White female co-worker sued him for sexual harassment. I wonder what happened to the case . . . . . . :)

  36. C.

Why do you guys watch Fox…? Stop giving them ratings! That’s how and why they thrive-

No television set in my home has been tuned to fox in the past 2 years…

Not even the least bit curious about their opinion on anything…And no truly patriotic, truth-seeking American ought to be…

  37. Leznoire1973

Juan Williams is a pathetic coward piece of merde. His weak, lame attack on Michelle is typical of Black males, many of whom (Along with White females) seem to have a HUGE attitude problem over having a Black first lady. This punk does not have the guts to go after Pres Obama, another man, so he attacks a Black woman. Like I said, typical Black male behavior these days.

As for the weeMichelles liking the Jonas Brothers, I am ALL for it, and HAPPY that they like those decent, clean-cut kids. I have NO problem with them being fans of a group of White boys. What do young (Or ANY) Black male singers have to offer the weeMichelles? Songs calling them every name in the book or telling them that they are not good/pretty as White & Hispanic girls? Is that what they need? I think NOT! And if the weeMichelles grow up to date interracially, I think that would be just wonderful.

  38. Dana

I think “coward” is the correct definition of the behavior of Juan Williams. Both the sexual harassment of female employees he worked with and the verbal harassment of the First Lady of the United States.

    Will he learn from this?

    That remains to be seen.

  39. I too see no problem with the weeMichelles liking the Jonas Brothers. Truth be told, we don’t have any young, popular Black boy or girl bands out now, especially suitable for Maila and Sasha’s age group. The girls enjoy Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel so naturally they will gravitate toward acts associated with those companies. And it’s not as if they don’t like any Black artists b/c I’ve heard that they are big fans of Keke Palmer (a young, teenage Nick star), the Black folks of High School Musical, Rihanna, and Beyonce. Liking the Jonas Brothers is perfectly acceptable; heck, I was a huge Backstreet Boy fan back in the day and I turned out just fine. Liking the Jonas Brothers won’t, or at least shouldn’t, make then any less Black or pro-black. Whoever gets mad or uncomfortable about this probably already have a skewed view of what’s considered being Black and the line known as “keeping it real”.

  40. Conan

Juan Williams is more honest than you bunch of dummies. Michelle O’Bama has a terrible posture. She’s flat-footed and when she walks, she lopes like Bigfoot.

  41. Cindy

Poor, sad, deluded “Conan”…Is that all you’ve got?!
