Here is a better photo of Michelle Obama’s Inaugural gown from the LA Times.
Let me tell you how dedicated I am. I had to endure the dreadful telecast of the “Neighborhood Ball” to get the first glimpse of Michelle Obama’s ball gown. It is a one shoulder number that appears to be made of white or ivory. My eyes are bad. It looks like it has feathers and sequins. Her hair is down and she has on a bracelet. I’ll get photos up as soon as I can.
More from LA Times:
Another young American designer and up-and-coming talent. Wu is 26 years old, was born in Taiwan and studied at Parsons in New York. An unsual choice, Obama is wearing white in the winter and white at night. But she looks every inch the style icon she is becoming. LA Times
The first dance was adorable. If you see a photo up first put a link in the comments.
Updates: Comments are coming in fast and furious and the site is crashing occasionally. DO keep in mind that intricate dresses don’t translate well on television. Especially white because of the lighting.
We also have to look at the fact that she is intentionally giving little known designers like Jason Wu, exposure.

Dear Lord, what was she thinking?! Michelle Obama wore a white ‘designer’ bedspread. That off-the-shoulder thing with the pom-poms or whatever they were stuck all over it did not impress me. Something smoother, sleeker, flowing…would have suited her better, IMHO.

Our First Lady look gorgeous!!!!! as well as our President looks so handsome!!!! Her dress is BEAUTIFUL!!! How wonderful that she chose a young American designer. Michelle is helping to promote one of our own country’s designer. By doing so, she is already doing just what our President has asked us: She helping others and working together to help our beloved country. Heaven Bless this terrific family and our country.

It took me a minute to like her earlier dress due to our bad tv at work (the dress looked pea green later found out it was yellow) but when I saw it on the net, I liked it. She looked nice in her ball gown but I wish she would have swept her hair up for a more glam look. Even if you did not like the dress when she walked out, once Barack and Michelle started to dance and those tears started to flow, I’m sure people were like, to hell with the dress, DID YOU SEE HOW CUTE THEY LOOKED!!!

The dress was overwhelming and unflattering. She looked pregneant. She is tall and statuesque, why couldn’t they have picked a dress that would have suited her better? Fox news even did a very visible change of their shot of her, alongating the picture so she would look slimmer.

I had high hopes for Michelle. She always looks so classy and divine, so I expected nothing less of her tonight. Of course, she looked stunning… she’d look stunning wrapped in feathers, toilet paper & sequins. Oh wait, she was. Hideous dress on a gorgeous woman.

she looked pretty but i wish she’d done something with her hair, it looks exactly the same as it did earlier. the dress was alright, not what i expected, a little too red carpet, though very young and fresh. also where’s mario pinto been this week? cute first dance, but barack needs some dance lessons.

It looks like a prom gown. I guess that she did not understnad that the Smithsonian will be getting the gown to display forever. She should have worn a more dramatic color than plain old vanilal white & what ever those flower things are. Baby blue, fushia, hot pink, violet, yellow, coral, turquoise, red, jade would have been so much flattering on her.

I was not impressed by the gown, Michelle Obama wore. I had hoped that for something classic and elegant. However, I did enjoy the Obama’s
dance together. I hope that people will watch and learn from their example.

The dress is horrible and looks horrible on her. She needs someone to help her pick out her clothes. Wonder how much she paid for that piece of fluff?

It looks better in a still photograph than it did on TV. She’s a gorgeous woman, and from the side, it was strangely unflattering. Not as good as the Maria Pinto purple sheath. I like the single shoulder look, and white is good on her. I’m trying to like it. I will keep trying. It’s great she chose a young designer, etc. About the fabulous Mr. President: Am I mistaken or should white tie only be worn with tails? I realize this may sound old fashioned but my understanding is that white tie on an invitation means tails…not a tux. He doesn’t seem to take sartorial risks so the white tie w/ tux was a surprise. They are both wonderful, and what a terrific day! I don’t even want to nitpick. The main thing is — they’re there!

Michelle’s dress didn’t quite do anything for her bust, but it was classy, feminine in a frothy, delicate way and fresh. It provides something difference than the De La Renta we’ve been seeing for the past eight years and then some.
And for the love of God, who the sam-hell wastes their time with silly old lady rules like “no white at nighttime or in the winter?” Join the 21st century, granny. And if you want to bash someone disastrous, try Beyonce The Braless Headlight Flasher. So there.

I think she would have looked better with a flowing dress without a waistline. Strapless would have been better as she’s young and is very buff. Her hair shouls have been worn up but the shoulder duster earrings are very flattering, It’s nice to see something different than the beaded pagent gowns that Mrs Bush wears. Go wear them in Dallas. Good riddens!

An unfortunate dress choice for more reasons than one – while she is clearly regal, she’s battling a grueling day of temperature extremes and the dress isn’t helping. This choice is too unwieldy and she seems to have a problem dancing in it. At the Illinios-Hawaii ball, she kept adjusting the skirt/train and it makes the dancing awkward. Not a good thing when your primary responsibility for the night is dancing at 10 balls. It will look stunning in the Smithsonian exhibit, but I look forward to other gowns in the future.

the best thing about the dress is that unlike what laura bush wore 8 years ago, and even what clinton wore before her, it actually looks like it was made this decade. all the others have looked like something out of a previous era, and not in a good way.

Oh my goodness my first thought when I saw the gown was a messy white chenille bedspread. She is so lovely and dresses with such class and elegance. The problem is that we all know how amazing she can look so its not that the dress wasn’t beautiful, I think we were expecting “Academy Awards” and she’s not an actress who has an army of stylists and handlers. She’s a mother and a wife, a busy one.
We also have to look at the fact that she is intentionally giving little known designers like Jason Wu, exposure.

Oh, am I really wanted to like tthis dress. It’s so unflattering … can’t she get someone to help her pick flattering styles (she’s so striking and chic) but the fashions today have been abysmal on her. Whassup with this? Does everyone just kowtow and say it looks good when it doesn’t? I always rthgout if I never needed to be “dressed” I would go to a top Oscar winning costumer like Albert Wolsky, Ann Roth or Colleen Atwood. These poeple know how to make you look GREAT and they are not “married” to one designer or another. They would determine your “image” and then help you select the best look for you. There, I’ve said my piece.
When Grace Kelly got married to a Prince she had Hollywood designer do her dress; when Liz married Burton, Irene Sharaf did her clothes … leave it to the pros, ladies.

Jason Wu…woo woo… a 17 year old wouldn’t wear that dress to a prom in 1970. And I felt like it looked poorly constructed especially on the back of the dress. Also the pleats/gatherings of the material made her look EXTRA huge in the posterior. And don’t get me started on the hair. I mean she could’ve put a curl in it, an up-do, or something. I’m sick of the same hairstyle in every picture that she takes. She should just stick to White House, Black Market or she could’ve matched Barack and worn a tuxedo[can you say garanimals]

The dress, or, “bedspread” – HA!, should never have been such a light color for a night of “lights and cameras”, which the designer should have known to factor in. It was a given she would be under bright lights. The fabric does look like chenille, not appropriate for evening, especially with clumps of flowers on it. The over one shoulder would be lovely if the fabric was something shear, and she looks GREAT in rich jewel tones. She needs a television/feature film designer to dress her for formal affairs. She does a great job with informal herself. Go girl!

I think some of the post are a little old fashioned. When it comes to fashion, leave your rules in the rule book. Michelle Obama wore a beautifull gown and was stunning it it. The dress moves well, and looks as if it can make it through the night.

My 14 year old daughter said Michelle is “hit or miss”, and this was a miss. She thought she looked like she had cottonballs stuck to her dress. I think she should have done something with her hair also. As the first lady she needs to look it. A teen would not have worn this to prom. What was she thinking?

Michelle totally blew her choice of style on the most special and big day. Her day outfit was like a curtain /upholstery, greens shoes and gloves very unclasssy…Her white gown looks like something a sixteen year old would wear on her prom. Very bad choice Michelle did you forget that this day is part of history. If you are trying to give new designer some fame this wasn’t the occasion to that. You should have picked beyonce’s mother Tina or Halle berry designer elli saab or armani. This was your night to shine donate the dress for history but you were not thinking, looks like you are trying to hard to be different…no need just be yourself.

Michelle has hit it out the park in terms of style during the inaugural weekend. I have loved the camel colored outfit she wore, and the beautiful black coat she had on for the train ride. I thought the gold outfit she wore on inaugural day was quite beautiful. I along with others have been waiting to see what her gown would look like. I thought she would wear a gown of color, perhaps emerald, royal blue, red etc. I was not expecting what I saw this even. Her gown was a total miss. I thought she could have done so much better and after what she wore this weekend I thought she truly would look simply majestic, instead her choice looked homely. I guess I can give her an “E” for effort.

That dress would have been pretty in 1983. In 2009, it looks like they draped a bedspread on her as if she’s going to a toga party.

It never amazes me how people are such haters when it comes to other successful people. Yea I agree that the dress was not the best choice and it did kind of make her rear look huge but who are we to judge what she wears as if she’s some fashion model. As for the hair comments, I don’t know if the people who said that was black or not but as a black woman getting dressed in an unfamiliar place in less than an hour and refreshing makeup is hard enough as it is. She didn’t have time to do anything extra to her hair. African American hair is not the wash and flat iron hair that the former first ladies had. She has ethnic curly hair that takes time to “change to another style”. I have never been to a shop to get my hair done and been out in less than an hour so I can imagine trying to dress and call orders for the kids as well before leaving. Give the lady a break and just let her enjoy what her husband has accomplished. I’m sure Barack can care less what she looks like at the ball. He’s probably waiting to see what she looks like tonight when it comes off!

My first thought when I saw the gown was a wrinkled chenille bedspread – the bodice where the shoulder strap connects is a mess. The earrings are more suited to a more sleek look. I expected the normally classy and elegant look Michelle Obama usually wears. She is so lovely and I thought the gown was distracting instead of flattering. How sad.

The new first lady should stay with designer Maria Pinto she looks elegant and classy when she wears her clothes. The inaugural ball dress is definitely a thumbs down. Its not the right choice for her . The dress is the exact opposite of the dress she wore at the oath ceremony .

I love Michelle and her style, as well. Since she looked so stunning during the inauguration, I guess maybe our expectations were too high tonight. I already had that look, though, having wrapped myself in my grandmother’s white chenille bedspread years ago while playing house!

It isn’t nice to speak negative about others, but I think it’s o.k. to give an opinion. Please please please whomever assign her clothes…stop it. Are you trying to make her look crazy on purpose? Shame on you. She look better when she was on the view in her black and white simple dress. She only need to wear one piece dresses like that lavender one she had on. No mores belts around her waists , no more jackets covering her dresses, and no boots with leggins.

WHAT WAS SHE THINKING!! SHE IS A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN BUT WOW WHAT WAS ALL OVER IT LOOKED LIKE COTTON BALLS AND WHT WAS THE DESIGNER THIKING BALL GOWN TO ME SAY’S DANCING. MICHELLE HAD TO KEED PULLING ON THE DRESS TO KEEP FROM STEPPING ALL OVER IT AND THE PRESIDENT COULDN;T EVEN TURN HER WITHOUT STEPPING ALL OVER THE BOTTOM OF THE GOWN. Again, I am going to say this one more time before I start blacklisting en masse. Talk about the dress. Talk about the coverage of the dress. DO NOT talk about each other.
Again, someone who disagrees with you is not the AntiChrist.. If you love the dress. Great. if you hate the dress. Great. We don’t care here at MOW how you feel about it one way or the other, but this is not romper room. We don’t throw mud pies in the comments section.

I think it makes sense to critique this particular dress. This is a process every first lady has to go through. This gown will have a place alongside the other First Lady Inaugural Ball gowns at the exhibit and like many others have commented, it has to stand the scrutiny of not only this generation but many generations to come. Also considering what a momentous ocassion this is with the election of the first black POTUS and the style MO is known for, I can see why some are disappointed.
I think she looks pretty but I was hoping for legendary.

I had to check my china cabinet to make sure my good lace tablecloth was still there. Good thing cause it seems she likes to use household fabrics for clothes like the couch cover dress earlier today. She may need to follow her husbands’ theme with ‘Change’! and go to a different thrift store.

I think that Michelle’s fashion picks today probably look wonderful in person. She seems to be focused not only on promoting young American designers, but on unique fabrics, texture and construction details that television cameras don’t capture effectively. Because she will continue to be making many televised appearances, she needs to get professional input about what plays well on screen–given lighting conditions and the tricks that the camera plays–versus what looks best in person.
Personnalt, I don’t care if she shows up in a thrift-shop special . . . she is a wonderful role model and I’m thrilled she’ll be living at the White House!

It is protocol to use nationally designed clothes. All presidents in the world do it, with some rare exceptions such as the late Ruth Cardoso, brazillian first lady from 1994 to 2002 for wich she received hard critics from the press, specially because she is also an intellectual icon…
Therefore, no, Michelle was not strictly putting to practice her husband word in helpint he other, except for the fact that her designer were relativelly anonymous up until now.
However, I have to agree with some comments regarding the white dress… I would not wear a white dress in winter, not even in Brazil (wich, by the way, is quite warmer than Washington’s climate).

I think the othe thing to keep in mind though…she stayed at the parade all day. That’s not a lot of time inbetween the end of the parade and the start of the Inaugural balls. I read that Jackie O left the parade halfway through to get ready.

Michelle needs a stylist. She definitely has the body to pull off the more “sophisticated” look. This gown looks like a gown someone would wear to the prom. Very unflattering. Now, I do not feel she necessarily needs to hire the high priced designers – she just needs a designer that can make beautiful and flattering clothes for her. The outfit for the inauguration was unflattering. When she took the coat off she had on a sweater. That’s right a sweater. A sweater with a sparkling dress. Green gloves and shoes – NO! When she went on the train ride the black coat was cute. When she removed the black coat Michelle had on a sweater and LEGGINS. All in all I think she definitely needs an experienced stylist to help with her clothes selection.
I am still very happy for her and her husband.

The gold inauguration dress was awfull looking. All she was missing was her crown. As for the Ball gown, I thought it looked like a bad 1960’s Prom dress, or like some one else mentioned a chenille bedspread. The beige dress and overcoat outfit was nice and elegant. For the most part I find her taste in clothes as gaudy.

Sadly, this First Lady does not have any fashion sense at all and neither do those that advise her. The golden suit with pea green shoes & gloves this morning were horrific. The coat flapped in the wind. Why didn’t the designer put in hidden snaps to keep the coat shaped properly? The gown she wore tonight looked like the aftermath of an encounter with canadian geese, perhaps that is why the US Air pilot was invited, to save her. And her hair? Heavens, she is now representing the United States, please do something with the hair other than having it hang down.
I know I am being a bit harsh but this woman is now the First Lady of the United States and needs to represent herself as such. A good stylist and posture coach would help her in the long run. Her posture is horrible.

Okay obviously ppl haven’t see a prom dress on this site since… the late 70’s. This was a 21st century dress. Prom dresses now days (and even in the 80’s) look like what you guys wanted her to wear. Prom dresses are rip offs of glam (ugh IMHO) movie star dresses. Fashion has been stagnant for a very long time. This was young and fresh will still being age appropriate. OH and 80’s dresses were like rayon oh some metallic stuff. I hope ppl start wearing stuff like this to proms instead of dresses ing like some fake Miss America (I say that as a girl who had avery expensive prom dress that you guys would have loved but again that was like 2001).

Oh and Jackie O was more than 40 years ago. 20th century, great for that time but…
Sigh okay Michele’s dress is the diff between Lou Hoovers and Eleanor’s. A dramatic change that signified a new error. Go back to some of the more memorable presidential pictures and you will see that Lincoln is the first one to wear a bow tie. TR is the first to wear a modern tie, and FDR is the first to smile and wear a modern collar.
And some-point we have to decide not to go back to the past (in fashion as well as politics).
Oh and Mrs O had to wear a bullet proof vest today so that’s why the dress wasn’t body hugging (at the inaugural).

Next generation is already here. Seriously I think ppl forget just how big of a demographic change is taking place. I just wish ppl would stop being stuck in the past but I guess it is hard to when that is all you know. The dress is reminiscent of Nancy’s except Michelle doesn’t look like some sickly piece of old skin. Also I doubt Michelle’s dress cost 46k (no that is not adjusted for inflation).

She clearly doesn’t have presidential taste. The dress she wore today had no lines was frumpy and who the hell wears glitter at high noon. She nailed it right on the nose for this mornings outfit. For the evening and I really hate to say it I found it too busy and not flattering . First thing I thought of when I saw the ball gown was my grandmothers chenille beadspread from the 60’s. Everyone is entitled to a bad outfit once in a while. The fact that she got the morning outfit dead on was great!

Wassup wit the “you can’t wear white in winter?” COME ON!! Us younger generation do not follow those superstitious things anymore. You have to let go of the past and realize young people are making an impact on this earth. Us younger people are so beyond that you can’t wear this or that. I think that is what happened with the ball dress. The designer was young and possibly could have thought it would appeal to a younger crowd. As I said earlier I don’t like the dress but I admire her individuality and her attitude that shows she could care less how people think of her.

I think most of you guys are very harsh on her. Expectations are way too high. This photo is not a good one. Mrs-o.org have good photos. I don’t see the problem with the dress, she can pull anything off. She looked very fresh and young. Most of all she’s giving prominence to not well known American designers, that’s a good thing for the fashion industry. We’ll see many good fashion moments in the next 4 or 8 years.

Oh dear, it’s not my most favorite thing ever. But she’s just so radiant and glowing and lovely this night, it really doesn’t even matter much to me what she wears…..

It wasn’t what I expected either, but I think she looked perfect. It wasn’t sleek and elegant, or a bright color like we thought we’d see, but it was ladylike, fresh, young, graceful, and comfortable (how many balls was it? – 10? – getting in and out of limo’s?), and flattered her figure enormously. What’s the big deal? How super critical can we get?

Michelle IS the First Lady so however she dresses is how the First Lady dresses. If Michelle showed up at the ball in a House of Dereon Miss Tina QVC special, then that’s how the First Lady dresses.
EVERY First Lady has gotten criticized over how they dressed. I don’t recall anyone saying that Laura Bush needs to understand or Hillary Clinton needs to learn or Barbara Bush needs to be told. And they usually get so dogged out they revert to the same boxy boring 60 year old white lady jacket and skirt. I want Michelle to take risks. I don’t want her to have to put on the First Lady Boxy Jacket, Skirt and Sensible Shoes Uniform.
On to Michelle’s Inaugural Day Critique:
A) The Yellow Coat and Dress: I hate the color yellow, but I think it looked great on her. I liked the teal shoes and green gloves. Black gloves and shoes wouldn’t have looked right. Obama is about hope and change and optimism and there’s no better color to express than than yellow. I’m glad she did not feel like she should have to wear the usual red or blue but went in a different direction, which is good for HER. As for the criticism that it was too sparkly for the daytime, the lady’s husband just became the President of the United States at noon. It’s not like she was going to Malia’s PTA assembly with that outfit on. If there’s ever an occassion to sparkle in the daytime, your husband becoming the POTUS would be it.
2) The Ball Gown: On TV it looks horrible. On TV Barack’s white tie looked invisible on the screen. So what if he should have worn tails? This dude has to fix the economy and get us out of these wars. The man just became President 13 hours ago, does anyone really think he gives a crap about wearing tails? In print Michelle’s dress looks much better. In the Smithsonian it will look fun and youthful and happy, compared to the stuffy and dour ball gowns from other First Ladies. Michelle’s gown couldn’t have been any worse than Hillary Clinton’s, Laura Bush’s, Barbara Bush’s or Rosalynn Carter’s. I didn’t care for the fluffiness of the shoulder strap, and the decorative aspects should have been left off the bodice but I thought it was a cute dress. It did NOT look like a prom gown, and anyone who says that hasn’t seen a prom gown for the past 25 years. I will say that Michelle did have a bit of trouble handling the dress and she couldn’t dance in the dress more than than 3 steps without having to shift it around. I give the dress a B. This dress wasn’t any worse than Nancy Reagan’s disco nightmare.

I love Michelle and the fabulous clothes she has previously worn, but today, of all days, was a fashion disaster. Oh, my eyes.
The day dress could have been lovely, but it was not functional outside. The closure for the coat looked like a strip of netting and was flying all over the place. When she was walking in the parade she had to keep adjusting the coat and holding it together. It just did not work. The coat lining was not a good color, and there were GREAT BIG SEAMS in the lining. And what the hell was that useless scarf-like thing? AND if all that wasn’t bad enough, the front right shoulder of the coat was puckered and uneven.
The white gown was so awful that if some mother had made it for the junior prom the kid wouldn’t have worn it. The top looked like bandages and feathers. Big Bird came to mind. The skirt looked like a chenille bedspread. The train was terrific, but again it wasn’t functional for her – she had to keep fiddling with it. You should never have to fiddle with clothes! And to think that this dress is going into the Smithsonian.

The ball gown was not pretty, but when the first lady dance with her husband President Obama’s; they looked like the best friends in the whole world.
I saw nothing but LOVE and Respect for each other.
I think she needs a fairy God Mother to dress her for America. I would have dressed her in a white gown with pearls, and diamonds. Her hair would be up; and a little more lip stick and white satin shoes..

I couldn’t wait to read the postings on this site. Poor shoddy Michelle. I know most people here are in love with the gal, but you can’t be in love with her taste. I get so aggravated at women with money that can’t put it all together. She could have worn anything on this planet, and she chose her inaugural sparkle-farkle daywear to rival something right out of the Speigel catalog. Poor thing. A winter white gown would have been dazzling, but her choice of a white prom dress? Maybe it was thrown together using some old chenille curtains from the Blair House.
Young, old, designer or off the rack, I hope her comparisons with Jackie O are over. Trend setter, she is not. It’s going to be hard enough to have to listen to her husband over the next four years…and even harder to look at her.

I am a designer and I was so uncomfortable with the length of the gown. I am not sure why this happened but this wonderful woman deserved to be free from worry on this most important day. I would not have been pleased if that were my dress. The idea was beautiful but it was too much dress and too long for such a beautiful, tall woman. I pray that she is not affected by this and for all future designers watch your lengths especially if your client is going to dance or go up and down stairs. A safe rule is that you see the tip of their toes with shoes on. Make sure you measure the length with the exact shoes they will wear, all of this matters in how the dress will hang. G. Marie

Meow Nurse Snow. Speigel catalog? ouch.
I thought that I was the only who questioned Michelle’s taste. I thought it was just hate on my part for not seeing the comparisons with Jackie. I wondered if she had girlfriends to pull her to the side. I’m happy to know I’m not that I’m not alone.
Today, I thought the color of the suit was beautiful on her but something was off with the fit (her butt looked humongous and the dress was bunched in the front). Add to that the green gloves, church lady kitten heels, and brown sugar pantyhose and the outfit just didn’t work for me.
I would have love to see her in an emerald green or blue evening gown but she chose white (that also wasn’t tailored). Her arms looked amazing through.
As for the comment that black hair isn’t wash and wear, that depends on the style and the stylist. I liked her hair down but all she had to do was pin it up in a chignon. An up-do that requires setting under a dryer for hours is a dated look.

WOW! Michelle’s dress was unique and impressive. She looked like a queen. The dress made her look like a tall Roman goddess. I am tired of cookie cutter dresses. I am glad that she wore something different than previous first ladies. It’s nice to see a first lady that dares to show her arms and shoulders. The dress was perfect for a ball. It flowed with her as she danced. It looked so soft and creamy on her. The dress made her look as if she was dancing in the clouds.

the day time outfit was very attractive on michelle. the ball gown did not please me as much as what she wears during any day. good luck designers, may michelle pick someone who can show off her attributes in evening dress as well as the designers have succeeded with her day wear.

With all the other more classy elegant dresses Jason Wu has to offer, the new First Lady made a very bad choice. However bad inaugural ballgowns has been a trend since Lady Byrd Johnson. In the futrure I hope to see Mrs. Obama attired in something more elegant and not something that looks like it got made in home ec class.

Michele is a beautiful woman, but why this white prom gown? It didn’t do her any justice..much.too fluffly and made her look bigger then her husband when they danced. It would have looked better on one of her daughters. Too bad, because she is tall and has the body to carry something more swanky and elegant.

Monica,
Are you black? If not how an you say that black women hair is wash and go? LOL I AM black and a hairstylist as well. No, our hair is not wash and go unless you have some background in your family of “good hair” as we call it. No, you don’t have to sit under the dryer for hours but we normally use a lot of product in our hair. She wears what we call a bob wrap. You wrap it every night around your head so that in the morning it comes out as a barely beveled curl. Going from that to a up do with short hair like hers is difficult in 30 minutes without a iron, some spray, pins, dryer, etc. Yea she could have rushed it or had someone do it while getting ready but you still would not have been happy and dogged her like you are doing now. Also, are you people color blind? The gloves and shoes were GREEN not YELLOW? I had to look at it online again to be sure my TV color was ok because everyone keep saying yellow but it was green. I would LOVE to see how some of you dress…lol I’m sure some of you have NO business saying the things you are saying knowing that your closets have disasters as well. Be happy with knowing she is human and makes mistakes. She’s not a model and struggles with her weight and image just as any other woman especially black women because obesity is huge in our nationality. So finding that perfect outfit can be hard. And why is it bad that she wore sparkles during the day? Again I am going to say as I did earlier that you all need to let go of that superstitious mess. Do you have a husband? If so, if he became POTUS wouldn’t you sparkle your butt off to represent your king? I know I would for mine. If you don’t have one quit being sour towards this woman who has a man that treats her like a queen and every woman would love to have one do the same thing. Women are too harsh on one another as if we are perfect. We all need to relook at ourselves and find inner beauty before we judge others.

Kisha,
Coming from someone who is black and someone who doesn’t have wash and wear hair, in my opinion it would have been easy for her to do something more than what she did with her hair last night. For the simple fact, that she probably didn’t wash her hair between the parade and the first ball. Therefore, her hair was still straight like it was earlier in the day. She had plenty of time [because they arrrived late to the first ball b/c the parade had gone on longer than expected] to put some loose curls in and pin them up or a simple french twist. Something that would have easily transformed her from day to night.
However, this blog isn’t about her hair or her make-up, its about her dress for the balls.

I think Michelle Obama looks great in whatever she wears. Her statuesque figure along with her attractive good looks enhanced that ball gown.
Since she is so tall, I would have chosen a more form-fitting frock with a mermaid hem. The choice of white as the color was inspired. It was as though she and Barack, with his white tie, were entering into a baptism, a christening of sorts.
Kudos to Jason Wu! He is up and coming!!!!

I read and/or heard that Michelle’s Ball Gown was $3,175.00. Not that I would spend that much on a gown for myself, however, quite affordable.
I recall one of Mrs. Reagan’s gowns cost $100,000 back in the 80’s.
Comparitively speaking, Michelle’s gown was a bargain for the price.

The gown was a bad choice. What are those fluffy things hanging from it ?They are hideous. Something is not quite right where the bodice and skirt meet…ill-fitted? She looks so lovely in jewel tones, I was disappointed in the choice of ivory. That color and the fit made her look wider than she is through the midsection. I do believe that her stature and elegance overshadowed this horror of a gown. As I was reading news reports this morning, I wondered if I was looking at the same gown that was being complimented in print.

come on you all….as for michelle’s hair. didn’t any of you accusers notice that the wind was blowing and any up-do would have blown apart in a matter of minutes!!?! i thought her choices of style were perfect for her. understated and lovely. i loved the gold inaugeral combo and thought the ball gown was so appropriate. she certainly isn’t a wall flower but last night (and rightly so) she took a back seat to her husband. she is divine, regal and has (and will) continue to knock it out of the ballpark with her choice of fashion. hillary was the disaster. if you all remember the blue long sleeve grandma dress she wore – and her hair was so dreadful (overly done and plastered down with hairspray) it would have survived a hurricane. lighaten up all of you and appreciate the fact that michelle is a gorgeous, gracious, spontaneous woman and will not be dictated by fashion. frankly, i thought the ball gown was lovely….

I really wanted to like this dress, but it was such a let down. BORING! It lacked ooph it lacked pizzaz. Someone commented on the cost, Yes $100,000 (Nancy Reagans) back in the 80’s was exhorbitant, but hey it was the 80’s and Nancy had style. Valentino, thank you, you know the women had taste. You cant strike out with Valentino. About the dress, wrong color, wrong style. It flattened her bust, made her hips bigger, no woman wants to look like a triangle. I love that Michele has curves. Play up those curves girl!

Before the First Lady of The United States came out for The First Dance, I mumbled to my husband, “I wonder if she’ll wear white,” and then I thought out loud, “No, that’s for brides.” Then the magnificent Mrs. Obama came out, and my husband said, “You were right!” And that was all that mattered.

Bless her heart – she just doesn’t have much fashion sense. She needs to remember what the whole world keeps saying – African American. With her skin color she should be very careful of white and cream. I’m not too wild about Michelle, but she does seem to be very intellectual and I would think that would translate into CLASS – so far I have not seen that from her attire. With Obama by her side, she needs to exude 100% of nothing but pure class. She needs to fire her current wardrobe / personal shopper (whatever she has) and hire someone that will dress her in nothing but pure class (hopefully to overcome the sometime scowl on her face). And someone needs to tell her not to stand around with that weird ?smile? where her bottom jaw is jutting out. Ok – I feel batter now that I have said my 2 cents – which means nothing!
The dress looked like a cross between a toga and my granny bedspread.

I think that our First Lady felt like a princess! Isn’t the whole reason that we elected President Obama because his priorities are in order? Arent’ there more important things to worry about than how her clothes look. They are a beautiful family, no matter what they are wearing. Let’s think about inner beauty for a change!

I think the dress was beautiful but I needed some time to like it on Michelle. She made it work though. I too wish her hair was up…
Also, it is not the kind of dress that looks nice on TV or camera as you can’t really see all the details and hard work of the designer. I think is much more interesting “life” than on the screen. Something Michelle is gonna have to learn I guess…

At first glance, I didn’t “get” the dress, and had expected something a little sleeker, and form fitting. My fault. I should know by now that it may be good to expect the unexpected with this lady!
The dress was it seems, from one description, flecked with organza flowers and crystals that sparkled, and was made of many layers of chiffon.
Having got over the sheer surprise of it, although it wasn’t at all what I expected/would look any good in myself or would have chosen, I like it, although the cons against are probably as many as the pros in favour. So for me, the train on the dress isn’t practical for dancing so serves little purpose, but the “blandness” of the colour sets of her rich skin tone, beautifully. The organza flowers and other intricate details are completely lost when viewed from afar, but are very pretty up close. It’ll look good, and perhaps be better appreciated when it can be viewed in the Smithsonian.
The new First Lady carried herself beautifully yesterday, on what must have been a difficult if very exciting day at times, and it’s been really lovely to see the favourable and highly complimentary coverage of her in world media, today. She did herself, her family and her country proud.

What on earth do I see that no one else dares to mention. Michelle was wearing that hideous dress becaue she has gotten fat and couldn’t possibly have pulled off a tunic line dress. Her thinking was that she could hid her figure in that dress; however, it just made her look heavier. Not well fitted to her at all. Lousy designer!!

I’ve read all of the reviews and only have this to say she wore what she wanted to wear it was her choice and as long as she encourages her husband to do what we elected him to do is all that matters we have more important issues at hand than what the 1st lady is wearing. what bearing does that have on the stse of the world’s issues?

It’s so funny that people want to criticize the First Lady dress and hair when she’s the 1st Lady. She looked lovely, because it’s her style. Did anyone think that Obama picked the dress, because he thought it was beautiful, or maybe Malia and Sasha picked the dress , because they wanted their mother to look like a princess? We have no idea the way the dress or how the First Lady looked in real life, beause we are watching her through a lense.
I will say this anything that fine President tell me to wear, I would wear, if I was his wife. lol.
BTW: Because the 1st lady is a shaply woman do you think maybe she didn’t want to wear a dress that people would focus on her body, rather than her husband?
Jan 21st, 2009
Nyro
This dress was a miss. It didn’t translate on tv, it didn’t fit quite right, and the color, for someone who can pull off gorgeous rich colors, was boring. Why wear white when you can wear marigold or royal purple?! Why wear a shapeless dress when you have the body to pull off a structured one? Do what most can’t.
I read that even up until the day before the inaguration, she still didn’t know what she was gonna wear. It was obviously last minute because the fit was off and it was too long for her. I felt bad when she had to keep messing with her dress and pulling it up so they could dance. And President Obama was stepping all over her dress as well.
And her hair and makeup were off as well. Last night, her face was practically bare. I think it was because they were so rushed she had no time at all to have her makeup redone, as well as her hair. That must be it because I’ve never seen her do something major without her hair and makeup looking nice. And I also noticed that by the third or fourth ball, it looked like her hair had been touched up, like she was still being “done” in between balls. Poor thing.
That said, I loved the outfits she wore for the train ride and at the big concert at the Lincolm Memorial. Other than that, it was a miss as far as clothes and hair and makeup. I know she brought in her hairdresser from Chicago to do hair and makeup for her this week. This is the same person who gave her that tired flip earlier in the campaign. She should have worked with the people who did her hair and makeup at the DNC convention. Her hair was PERFECT at her DNC speech! And her makeup! Natural but still polished and glowy. This person who did her makeup this week used too much dark color on her. All plums and mauves. Those colors are bad on her. Having a deep complexion does not call for deep makeup. And her hair was not on like it usually is. The stylist seemed more concerned with just getting her hair as straight as possible. Took all the body out of her hair. I read she is a natural who gets her hair pressed. That’s why her hair usually looks so full and lush. But this person pressed all the life out of her hair this week. And whoever did her hair seems to not know that you can put holding spay on a pressed ‘do! Her hair was constantly flying around and she had to keep messing with it. It was too wispy and had no weight to it.
I’m so critical cause I am in the beauty business and I think Michelle is just lovely. But it’s time for her to get a real celebrity stylist because the people who’ve been “advising” her don’t know what they’re doing. She’s really the First Lady now and she has to start dressing for the cameras. The dress she wore, thought ill fitted, was beautifully constructed. Looking closely at the pictures, I can see that it is a beautiful gown. But on tv and most photos, it looks like balled up tissues. That’s not a look you want to convey. That election night dress was beautiful but it made an unseemly pattern on tv and she put a cardigan over it.
I read some store owner back in Chicago has been advising her. She needs to get rid of that person and ask her celebrity friends who dress them. She has the body to wear amazing evening wear and that look last night did not do her justice.
But, that said, you can tell Barack loved how his wife looked. He was not only beaming but he was all over her. I can only imagine how he’d react to her if she had brought her “A game” fashion wise last night. He probably would have been like “forget these balls, let’s go home NOW!!” LOL

To Nyro: I wholeheartedly agree with your post. However, somehow I get the impression that MO is really not into fashion. That she does not really care what we think about the clothes she chooses. She would probably not take your advice and hire a celebrity stylist because this fashion thing is not that important to her. Also, after reviewing the media reports on her attire yesterday – they are being very “careful” not to offend her – for now. The media will leave her alone for now – but a few more missteps like yesterday and they are going to crucify her.
I still love my girl!!

Debbie,
Yes, the fashion media is being careful not to offend. Michelle sells magazines and they want her on their magazine covers or at least in their pages. From what I’m hearing, most people I know thought the evening dress was bad and they day ensemble was too bulky and the color was weird. So if your average Joe didn’t like it, you know the fashion industry people didn’t like it. On all the fashion reviews, you can see them talking all over themselves trying to find something nice to say about her outfits yesterday.
Look, I do makeup and used to be a personal shopper some years ago. I do think Michelle likes clothes. You don’t wear the kind of stuff she wears and not have a love of clothes. But you may be right that she doesn’t care about “image” per say. To which I say, she ought to start caring about “image”. I think Michelle is so pretty and has a good figure that can pull off really interesting clothes. I don’t want her to start getting clowned like Hillary.
I wish I could have styled her yesterday! First off, no more dark makeup. I want to strangle her makeup artist. One, for that dark dreary almost gothic look he/she gave her at the Lincoln Memorial concert, and two, for not giving her a a completely fresh makeup job for the balls! Her face was practically BARE!! That was unacceptable. Makeup finishes off a look. I guarantee you, had her makeup been on point, and her hair as well, people wouldn’t even be talking about that dress, they’d be looking at her lovely face. Secondly, I knew her hair would not be at it’s best this week. Loyalty is great, but if that person doesn’t make you look your best when the eyes of the entire world are on you, then you don’t need to hire them. When I found out it was her local hairdresser, the one who thought it was a good idea to give a 42 year old woman a stiff flipped bob, I knew her hair would not look it’s best. Take stock of your best looks and hire the people who make you look your best. Period. Loyalty be damned. Her hair looked like her lil’ cousin did it. Perfectly fine if she’s just a regular woman running to out to lunch with the girls. She should have worked with the man who did her hair at the DNC. It was sleek, shiny, and had body, and it never moved out of place. And she should have kept whoever did her makeup at the DNC. Her makeup was flawless. You saw her face, not the makeup.
I know I’m ranting but I’m mad that these people have the biggest gig in the world, and they’re making their client, the First Lady, look off. Whoever did her makeup yesterday and at the Lincoln Memorial concert does not know what they are doing. I couldn’t stand seeing that big plum stripe across the entire side of her face, supposed to be blush. Michelle Obama already has super high cheekbones. She does not need to have her cheekbones “created”! She should have had a lovely blush just on the apple of her cheeks. No more plum lipstick, no more black eyeliner, no more sharp eyebrows. She has good strong features. They did her makeup the way you would do makeup on a woman who has a flat face. You don’t have to “create” features for her, she already has them.
The thing is, there’s so much to work with with Michelle Obama. Yet the people who glam her up are not doing their job.
And don’t get me started on the daytime ensemble. I liked that it was different, but again, it was not functional and there were too many elements that made it look sloppy. One, it added 20 pounds to her. If by chance someone had been living under a rock and just saw Mrs. Obama for the first time yesterday morning, I’m sure they were shocked that she had such slim and trim arms and shoulders! She is a woman who is dedicated to fitness. Show it off. Why she would wear something that made her look heavy and shapeless is beyond me. Seeing her svelte figure in that traffic stopping tomato red dress she wore when she visited the Bush family in November, you’d never imagine that was the same body in that bulky outfit yesterday. Why add 20 pounds. Who thought that was a good idea! It’s like every good option was turned down. It’s like the thought process was, “Let’s see, she looks great in bright colors and sleek clothes.Yes, let’s put her in the ugliest pea soup green and make her look like bulky. Genius!”
I would have put her in purple for day. That’s is her signature color. Like royalty. It would have been a purple wool skirt that hit right about above the knee. Paired it with a navy blue tie neck blouse. Over the blouse, a matching jacket, a purple cowl neck wool coat. Nipped in at the waist, hitting her right above the hip. Pair with black knee high mid-heeled boot. That look would show off her hourglass shape, it would be nice and structured, bright and colorful, and it would keep her warm as well.
For evening, I think she got one thing right. The asymmetrical top. Few can pull that off, and if you can do it, do it. But here’s what I would have put her in.

The dress was awful, as was the suit she wore to the inauguration. Truthfully I haven’t seen her wear anything that was fitting for the first lady of the most powerful country in the world! Often she looks like she shops at Lerners or works behind the cosmetics counter at Macy’s. Please someone help her!! He looked so wonderful and handsome at the balls, and she looked like she was wearing her bedspread!

Nyro, I agree with your last choice! She would have looked wonderful in that one shoulder fitted black dress!!! Maybe you could help her with what to wear? Someone sure needs to!

Miss Kisha,
Guess what I am Black and I have wash and go hair not because it’s “good”. My hair is a mass of kinks, naps, and curls that I wash and wear daily. It’s called a natural.
Okay.
And I make Mrs. O put on those fugly accessories.

@Nyro That would have been a nice combo. Not sure about the color though. Ididn’t have a problem with the ivory color. I agree that if she had placed her hair up like she did on the second night of the DNCC, nobody would have cared about the dress. I didn’t have a problem with the makeup. I think we also have to remember she is also caring for and acclimating two little children.
President Obama didn’t seem to care with all the PDAs. Loving the Obama Love.

The dress was really nice. The detail on it did NOT come across well on TV. It had beaded crystals all over it, and the detail on the torso and the shoulder strap were fantastic. From a distance it looked simple but it is actually a beautifully well made dress.

The white frock was very disappointing. It added too much bulk around the mid section. She is way too elegant for that stupid looking dress. She could not dance as it was too long and kept getting under her shoe. She should have worn her hair in a updo. These so called designers…………I wonder about them. The daytime outfit was okay.

Mmm, well I suppose a reaction is better than no reaction…!
The First Lady has given us enough of an indication of her personality to show that she will be doing things, fashion wise, her own sweet way, regardless.
When she vacates her role, we may well find that it’s a case of back to the “same old, same old” so I’m just going to enjoy her individuality – whether I think her choices are good or bad – while I can!

I think her taste in clothing is horrible. She is our First Lady and she showed up for a formal ball in one of the ugliest gowns I have ever seen. Looked just like a bedspread my grandma had when I was little. She is too tall and big boned for such a gown. She needs to wear form fitting clothing. she looked like a size 16 and is supposedly a size 8. She kept having to “arrange” all that material on the dress every time she moved and he kept stepping on it. Not a good look for her initial presentation. I liked the outfit she wore to the inauguration but hated the color and those pea green gloves – OMG. What the?

Maybe Michelle Obama strategically wore that ugly ass dress so that all of you Obama freaks will get off her back! Gosh, she is a damn woman not a goddess. Let her live. If she wants to wear a dress that looks like it was made out of toliet paper, let her! Stop trying to make First Lady Obama into the ultimate representation of black women. She is just an individual.

Tammy,
She is not a size 16. According to a designer who’s supplied clothes to her, she is a 12. At 5′11, she’s slimmer than most women. I’ve seen her in person and she is slimmer than she dresses.

My first thought: Toilet tissue cover. And from then on I couldn’t get past the toilet tissue covers. Michelle Obama has the body to dress but she needs some help. And it DOES matter because she’s the First Lady of the United States of America and the media is going to be all over her every time she steps outside the White House. The same thing happened to Princess Diana. She was awkward with fashion at first, then WHAM, she knocked everyone on their feet because she learned what worked and I think that Michelle will, too.

The dress is already being copied. Oh and it isn’t bc ppl love Michelle (especially young ppl) it is bc the dress is young and fresh. Like a new era. So don’t be surprised if your daughters want to buy something similar for prom. http://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/fashion/2009/01/22/2009-01-22_fashions_copycats_are_having_a_ball_knoc.html

Nyro:
I love the selections that you identified for MO. What did you think of the outfit she wore to the National Cathedral? To me, another misstep. All of your points are well taken. However, I still do not think she is a fashionista. Clothes are secondary to her,in my opinion. I will be pleasantly surprised if she hired a professional stylist. If she did not take the “hint” after that red and black mess of election night – why should anyone expect that she would after the outfits she selected for the inauguration? I read that she made her choice the “morning of”. Now that should tell everyone that clothes is not her thing.
Again, I still love her – the sista just needs a lot of help in the clothes department.

She looked great to me, but after being on her feet all day in heels walking so much and then having to continue to fight to keep from walking on her dress I felt sorry for her although she never stopped smiling. she is tough.

A stylist would only make her dress, old/like all the other first ladies in the past couple years. At best they would put her ins something like Condi wore. I shudder @ the thought.
In both dresses Michelle looked a good 10 years younger. Again, if the majority of ppl hated the dress, they wouldn’t make copies of it.

HUH
I disagree with you about the stylist. If they are professional they will dress their client accordingly. A good stylist knows their stuff. They would dare try to dress her like some of the other first ladies. That would be foolish. I still concur with Nyro that if she gets a stylist and a good designer that designs specifically for Michelle I think she will be ok. I also think that the mainstream press are being very “careful” with her for now. But trust me when I tell you that if something does not change they will loose patience and will not be very nice. That, in my opinion, would be unfortunate.
I still like my girl!!

But it isn’t just the main stream press. It is small indy newspapers, other fashion blogs (check out some of the polls on sites like huffpo) college newspapers, obscure foreign press (even in hostile countries). In our college break room, even in between wiping off tears many of the girls were commenting on the fab color of the Toledo outfit. Besides, in this economy dress makers would not make a dress if they didn’t feel it would sale.
The one thing I’ve noticed about fashion over the past few years, is that it has diversified. There isn’t one set style/approach anymore. One more thing, as much as I hate the Jackie comparisons, there is a good one. Lots of ppl didn’t like what she wore (like to church for example). The change from Mamie to Jackie was big.

To all you self made fashion critics –
As long as President Obama liked what Michelle had on, that’s all that mattered to her. Being the woman she is, she dresses to please her man and herself, not any of you.
For all the haters – everyone would find something wrong with the dress selection you’d recommended.
If Mrs. Obama didn’t like the dress, she wouldn’t have worn it. DUH!

I noticed that there were very little comments about the ball gown on the networks. A sure sign that it wasn’t such a hit. The networks were being very nice to Mrs. Obama not daring to throw in any negative comments on inauguration day. It’s nice to see them so considerate, but it would be nice if they showed that kind of consideration across the board and not only to people they happen to like. I like fair reporting not bias.

I thought the First Lady looked fine. I think she really just didn’t have time to do anything dramatic, with her hair and all that. I believe they had been behind schedule, all that day.
As far as the comments that a teenage girl wouldn’t wear that dress, to a prom. Of course she wouldn’t, have you seen what the teen girls wear today to those proms? 99% of the time they are half-naked! lol.
rock on First Lady!

I agree Gina that the Neighborhood Ball telecast was dreadful. First Lady Michelle Obama should really be concerned about having artists like Beyonce and her thug husband Jay-Z anywhere near her family. To allow Beyonce to perform at their first dance was foolish. Why not allow the great Etta James the honors of doing that performance, not a booty shaking artists with no talent. Beyonce’s image is horrible for her girls to be exposed to. My girls are the same age as hers, and they don’t even know who Beyonce is. As long as I’m raising them, they never will. As a teacher I try to share with young girls that Beyonce is not an artists you want to embrace. Yet we have the President of the United States and the First Lady embrace her with open arms. I just don’t understand it.
I could care less about what dress she wore because having artists like that attend any inauguration is setting a terrible example to young people. Are you aware of the video of Beyonce’s thug husband Jay -Z speaking in such a negative tone at the D.C. inauguration? It’s all over youtube.
As First Lady I hope she uses her energy to correct the images of young black girls by denouncing hip hop music and the culture.

Mickey:
I hear what you are saying but let me drop this line on you. It is all political. I understand Jay-Z gave a lot of money to Obama’s campaign. That is the reason why you saw JayZ and Bey performing during the festivities. However, I agree with you 100% about Beyonce – but money talks.

I expected more from Michelle. Her gown looked on TV like cotton balls were attatched to it. She had difficulty with the skirt, always fiddling with it. Very distractive. I have seen pictures taken for Vogue magazine with her hair done in an upsweep style. Stunning! Why couldn’t she have done something like that for a formal occasion? Having connections with the Hollywood crowd, I thought she could have picked something more classy for an occasion like this. I’m not saying she did not look lovely, but the dress was not First Lady material.

Please let everyone have their own individual style. I thought she looked georgoes – it was a fitted dress but why do we always have to show off our skin or wer skin tight clothing – she looked elegant – I am proud she just does her own thing – let’s be real imagine people scrutinizing your clothing every day – wouldn’t like it hey – give the woman a break! She looked like a lady – nice to show our young girls that you don’t have to greese your body to fit into clothing to look good. Go Michelle!!!!!
