CNN.com reports that TY, the makers of the famous Beanie Babies, has created two beautiful dolls named Sweet Sasha and Marvelous Malia. However, they want to make it abundantly clear that the dolls have nothing to do with the first daughters:
“Information concerning the development of our products and how we come up with names, how we select them, how we trademark — that’s considered as proprietary,” TySenior Vice President of Sales Tania Lundeen said. “I can’t go any further with that question.” Lundeen said
Lundeen explains that the dolls are a product of TY and they are not obligated to disclose how the company formulates new products.
“Sasha and Malia are beautiful names” that “worked very well with the dolls we were making.” “There’s really nothing on either doll that refers to anything else that you may have read in the media today,”
Coincidentally, Sweet Sasha and Marvelous Malia are the only African-American dolls in their current lineup. Those names were used because they were the only two that fit the dolls. Although the dolls bear the same names as Sasha and Malia, Tania Lundeen implied that TY is has its own standard for choosing names:
She said her company avoids naming dolls for “any particular living individual” because it might interfere with how kids use their imaginations to play with them.
Naturally, this is a cause for concern within the first lady’s camp. The following statement was released:
“We feel it is inappropriate to use young private citizens for marketing purposes,” said first lady Michelle Obama’s press secretary, Katie McCormick Lelyveld.
Andrew Herrmann, staff reporter of the Chicago Sun-Times, explains that Michelle Obama is one mom who will probably not be buying the new dolls.
Since the news of the dolls’ release, the TY website has had a huge spike in traffic.

That’s complete BS. I’m sorry but the coincidence is just too obvious for this story to even make sense. They know good and well that they were trying to profit off those young girls. Now, if Barack and Michelle had shielded the names of the girls until NOW, then I could understand the alleged coincidence…..but this is BS and they know it. SMH

First, I totally agree that it’s inappropriate and second, the response is absolutely crazy-making. How can they possibly deny a link? That is like continuing to assert that the invasion of Iraq was justified. Couldn’t we please begin to exist in reality? Everyone? TY needs some kind of intervention.

I’m offended that they think we are extra special stupid! Malia is not that common a name. All of a sudden they launch two dolls with the same names as the two first daughters and there is no linkage?. BAH!

a few days ago one of their spokespeople said the dolls were absolutely based on the obama girls, and now that people are a little creeped out that they’re not only trying to make a buck off the girls, but that they’ve gone and given a 7 and 10 year old breasts in the doll version, they’ve done a complete 180. these folks are made of all kinds of stupid. and yes michelle is absolutely right, and anybody that criticizes her for finding it inappropriate isn’t doing so on the actual merits of the issue but rather on how they feel about michelle or the obamas in general. these are kids, who didn’t get to choose who their parents are nor the life that they have; those who think it’s somehow open season on them now have got issues.

i should add that the benefit of this complete 180 and the ensuing debate is entirely to TY, in that it drives up awareness of the product, and obviously sales. it’s really unfortunate, because it will only encourage others to similarly take advantage of the girls.

I thought the dolls were a cute idea, and then I thought, I wouldn’t want any dolls resembling my children. At the end of the day, these are HER children, and she doesn’t want to exploit them. If young exploited children is what you like, there are plenty of Miley Cyrus dolls.
Then for the company to later lie and say they didn’t make the dolls in the likeness of the girls is crazy. People make mistakes, making dolls in the likeness of people without permission is a mistake. Instead of owning up to it, TY started to lie and try and avoid dealing with their mistakes. These girls are too young to try and take on iconic status. I hope their mom is able to shield them from this type of exploitation in the future.

I think while President Obama is signing all those executive orders he should sign one forcing Ty to turn over all gross profit (not just net, gross, as in full sale price) from sale of the dolls to childrens charities.
I know it’s not feasible, but Ty has gone to far on this one. Let the little girls be little girls. Just because their Daddy is the leader of the free world doesn’t mean thier lives shouldn’t be as normal as possible.

You know what? This incident proves me and many others wrong that underestimated the mom-in-chief position for the first few months of their life in WH. She really needs time to get the hang of it with such people.

I had no idea the dolls had breasts. That makes this all the more sickening.

So many young black girls need a positive image, and your daughters represent that at this time. Perhaps you could work with this company to receive profits due, and produce other positive images of black girls. Personally, I think it was a compliment to use your daughters in such a positive way (sweet Sasha and marvelous Malia). I love it! At least this company did not have Malia and Sasha looking like the Bratz dolls which are very similar to the look of hip hop/rap music videos.
What First Lady Michelle Obama should be concerned about is having artists like Beyonce and her thug husband Jay-Z anywhere near her daughters. To allow Beyonce to perform at their first dance was foolish. Why not allow the great Etta James the honors of doing that performance, not a booty shaking artists with no talent. Beyonce’s image is horrible for her girls to be exposed to. Your daughters could represent the opposite image of a Beyonce.
Use your energies as First Lady to correct the image of young black girls by denouncing hip hop/rap music and the culture.

i couldn’t help but be disgusted by the dolls. some are saying that it’s great and the girls are public figures– key words- these black girls are for public use. the dolls don’t look like the girls and have been sexualized with breasts. malia and sasha ceased to be human beings in their eyes and are available to be sold and traded. these dolls don’t have the features of the girls which means black girls are innerchangable , just tack a name on. Ty went so far to think these girls are available for profit that they didn’t even think it was necessary to ask their parents permission.
This goes beyond Miley Cyrus. She gets paid for everything that bears her name and likeness. Her business is the product. These girls are NOT in show business and deserve to be protected like we want our daughters shielded from exploitation.

To MICKEY, for your information, Ms. Etta James was to be in attendance; but due to her illness, she couldn’t attend. Check your information before writing a negative comment about someone.
And it doesn’t make a difference if Beyonce and Jay-Z were invited. They just were and again check out information because if you know anything you should check out the work that Mr. and Mrs. Carter do besides rap and sing.
And for the dolls, that was done totally for profit purposes, and the money that they do make off those dolls, should go to the Obamas favorite charities. Then we will know for sure if the dolls were for the sake of the beautiful names or for marketing.
Thank you and have a blessed day.

I feel really guilty, but I think the dolls are cute and I would love to buy them for my 9 year old daughter. American Girl makes dolls that you can request to look like “you”.
I do agree that it is wrong to do without the parent’s (Michelle and Barack) permission. I wish they would give their consent. I want my child to have cute dolls that positively portray African-American girls. I think these do, except for the fact that TY screwed it up so badly. What a shame.
