I can only imagine what Sojourner Truth felt just moments before she mustered the strength to ask, And Ain’t I a Woman? Her words tell us that she lived during a time that turned a death ear of the enslavement of human beings while protecting the virtue of white women by denying them voting rights.

That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place! And ain’t I a woman?

In uttering these words, Sojourner Truth made it it crystal clear that although female by gender, her race did not garner the same privilege, protection, or respect in which white women had come to and still enjoy. That was in 1851, and now 157 years later, the question remains “Ain’t I a Woman”? Yet, to that question, writers like Mike Alvear for Huffington Post answer it with a resounding NO when referencing First Lady Michelle Obama.

Recently, many of MOWers voiced outrage over HP’s continued practice of referring to Sasha Obama as “sassy” – a characteristic that many felt to be demeaning with racial undertones. Shortly after, this writer found herself engaged in a debate regarding a photo caption by Bauer Griffin referencing then President-elect Obama’s wife and daughters as ”his [Obama’s] gals“. But all that pales by comparison after reading Mike Alvear’s recent and utterly disgusting confession regarding for First Lady Michelle Obama.

I’m guessing the sex is so hot when the Obamas are done, the Bidens light a cigarette. For the first time in years, the White House bedroom is going to see more action than Clinton’s Oval Office. Baby got back and it brought monogamy with it. Barack and Michelle are doing for fidelity what Clinton did with infidelity — make us cover our eyes and peek through our fingers.

Alvear disguises his continued insults as praise for the First Couple’s monogamous relationship with more sexual innuendos and connotations. Perhaps, it is Alvear’s need to increase his rating that he chose to play out some perverse fantasy regarding the First Couple. Or perhaps, Alvear’s belief in freedom of the press includes disrespecting a man and his wife with imaginary intimate details of their private lives. But, no matter the impetus of and no matter how its contents might be “explained away” – there is nothing that can or will ever explain his final remarks about First Lady Michelle Obama:

…And don’t get me started on her. She’s the first-ever FLILF (First Lady I’d Like To…)

Yet, the blame for this post by Mike Alvear must fall at the feet of Arianna Huffington who allowed such trash to be published. Perhaps she should take the advise she once gave to Bill O’Reilley and enroll in an Internet 101 course. At the very least, Arianna should upgrade the HP automatic editing program designed to flag a posts with key-words not suitable for publication, making absolutely sure that FLILF is at the top of the list.

And the answer to the question is, YES, I AM! AND I DEMAND YOUR RESPECT!

  1. What?!

Even decent black people are still not respected in this country, what else is new? We’ve been saying that for years, nobody believed it, till now.

  2. How disrespectful and unacceptable. I haven’t been reading the HuffPo much recently (mainly due to how they’ve discussed Sasha and Michelle) so I missed this.

  3. bj

This is totally disgusting. I am a South African female and this would not be tolerated well here…it’s bloody shameful.

  4. CMS

Shame on Huffington Post! You should KNOW better! We will not forget what you allowed to be printed. Improve.

  5. Although we recognize and honor our country’s First Amendment rights, how about honoring decorum and showing respect for our country’s Commander in Chief and his wife, our First Lady?

MIKE: To debase our First Lady to one of your grubby, wretched sexual fantasies is despicable.

  6. Eeeeeewwwwww! First Actor Alan Cumming giving his thoughts on the Presidential wang and now THIS? What is WRONG with people? Gross!

  7. Yonnie3k

We can question all day whether or not this article was “appropriate.” However, boundary crossing aside, I do not think that it was intended to be disrespectful. It appears that the author is alluding to the fact that The First Couple is deeply in love with and visibly attracted to one another. This is not something that we’ve seen in past Presidents and First Ladies. His approach was crass, yes. But I don’t read the intent in the same way that it seems many of you do.

  8. danadevin85

i think it’s a good thing that he feels they are attracted to one another
and that they have a loving relationship
but i do think the (FLILF) comment was very disrespectful
i don’t think any other first lady would be addressed like that
no matter how attractive he thought they were

would he like that kind of comment thrown at his wife or girlfriend?
i don’t think President Barack Obama or first lady Michelle Obama would like it either

  9. mona31

i don’t doubt that the author meant it as a positive thing but i can’t help but be annoyed that people feel entitled enough about the relationship of two people they don’t know at all to make the kinds of crass comments that people have been making about them, it’s not just this piece. i just can’t help but feel that part of this comfort with talking about them in this way stems from stereotypes that exist about black people and sexuality, and i’m annoyed by what i consider to be a base level of disrespect that people seem to treat them with, relative to past couples in their position.

  10. Black women have always been treated like sexual chattel and talked about as if they were perverted creatures. I guess this disgusting vile talk still goes on even though we have a loving, wonderful family in the White House who just happen to be African American.

  11. Layo G

This post is most certainly not appropriate for ANY lady, yet alone the First Lady of the United States

This is disgusting, and most demeaning, and lewd…there must be respect for her role in the country, and I usually like Huff Post, but this is not appropiate

If we all wrote to Huff Post, and let our voices be heard, they will be forced to take it down, and think twice in the future, before putting such garbage up!

  12. Gaelle

Guys, relax, he was always joking! Yeah, it wasn’t appropriate, but it was still a joke. You guys need to develop tougher skins and stop being offended at every little thing thrown at Michelle (or Barack). No matter how much we love and respect them, there is always going to be someone out there (comedian, right-winger, racists etc…) who’s going to say something we don’t like….This comes with the territory. They’ve only been in office 2 weeks…trust me, you’ll hear much crazier and nastier stuff in the next few years.
And you guys are acting like NOBODY ever said anything vile/nasty/disrespecting etc… about Hillary, Bill, Bush, Laura or our sister Condi. Let’s not even talk about all the nasty stuff said about Sarah Palin (whose politics I despise, but vile personal attacks were launched at her even before people knew how to pronounce her name).

Moral of the story: Yeah we are happy to have Michelle as the FLOTUS, but lighten up and don’t be hypocrites. She is not the Queen of England. If you are going to be offended about personal attacks against her, be offended about personal attacks on Sarah, Condi, Bush, etc….Her being black doesn’t immunize her from stupid jokes.

    Real Talk!
    Gaelle!

  13. Kelly

I agree with Gaelle. While working in corporate, the men would say things that were a little things that were inappropriate to the women (black and white). When they see that you laughed but not in a way where you were enjoying it, they would not go there with you again. White women were (sometimes) a little more accepting and joined in. Some were offended. Black women ALWAYS had attitudes. Instead of brushing it off and the guys would see that you were not down…the black women would create drama behind it. So that would be where the friction started. The reactions of black women would make the atmosphere uncomfortable. I dont like to joked with regarding my sexuality as a black woman but I chose my battles or get out. There are things that Michelle will be subject to like everyone else in her position. My God! If they cant take it they should not be in the white house. There are a lot worse things that people can say about them besides they probably have good sex! They called Bush’s wife (41) ugly. They called Hillary ugly. They dont just say things about Michelle and Barack. They say things about everybody!

  14. Kelly

They dogged out Sara Palin ANNNNND Caroline Kennedy.

  15. admin

Folks there is no indication that the First lady or the President read this or any other blog including Hipster Racist Headquarters aka The Huffington Post.

This blog isn’t about the President’s “Feelings. This Blog isn’t about the First Lady’s “Feelings.” This blog is about the depiction of Black women, one Black woman in particular, in popular culture. its a media literacy/critical analysis blog /fan club.

Therefore YOU might not think its a big deal, but that’s why the blog exists for people, and there were several, to have a voice about how they think this Black woman in particular is being treated in the media.

No one can cite me a single example where so many people have involved themselves in the goings on in a Presidential boudoir. So the question is WHY is it that so many people feel comfortable publicly fantasizing about the private affairs of the President and his wife? Could it have anything to do with the oversexualization of both Black men and women throughout history?

I don’t know, but this is a place where people can talk about that. If you don’t like to talk about these minute details related to the media’s depiction of the First Lady of the united States then bounce! hit the bricks! Throw up the deuce! Don’t come to a blog called Michelle Obama Watch and then complain because we’re watching!

Might I also add that Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin have ENTIRE BLOGGING NETWORKS in their defense. If you exclude the fashion blogs, I am only aware of a half a dozen Michelle Obama blogs.

For the record I clowned people who dogged out Sarah Palin AND Hillary Clinton because moral authority and consistency matters.

  16. SjP

Much obliged, Admin! Cause I felt a rant coming on that was not going to be good. So, I am truly appreciative for you comments on this post as it truly “talked me down”!

So, I think it best for me to just say “ditto to everything the Admin said”!

  17. Thanks, admin. ^5 on keepin’ it sista!

Kelly, because women were silent when harrassed, and the harrassment ended, that made the situation okay? “Hey, let’s let the immoral behavior go, even participate in the oppression, and everything will be okay, because we’ll appease the white men.”

Black women didn’t “create” the problem. The inappropriate men were the problem, but with “allies” like you describe, who would throw offended women, regardless of color, under the “can we all get along, people? Please?” bus, I can see where someone would ill-perceive drama. Did women get the vote by being nice and going along with the fellas?

I don’t know if you’re Black, I don’t know if you’re a woman, but I am both, and I have a personal commitment to fighting defamation against women of color, so this was a big deal for me.

  18. Dee

Ditto to everything SJP said about what Admin said!

  19. admin

@SJP Relax, Relate, Release! Whoo SAAA! Walk away from the light. :)

It just kills me when people come to a blog called “Michelle Obama Watch” and say we’re throwing a “fit” or are engulfed with “anger” or “need to calm down.” Or talk to the contributors as if they are small children who just don’t understand. As if people covering Michelle Obama daily for well over 8 months “don’t understand the way things are in the real world.” Whatever!

The blog is doing what it is supposed to do, exposing people who choose to turn a blind eye to the obvious and giving people an opportunity to respond.

  20. Dana

    Three cheers for the Admin!

  21. danielle

Oh give me a break. You people sound like folks who look for something to complain and be offended about no matter what. If a little white girl was labeled as “sassy” as they often are you would not blink. Who gives a crap if someone made a joke about the Obama’s sex life? If it was said about the Bush’s you wouldnt care.

  22. Isonprize

Don’t come to a blog called Michelle Obama Watch and then complain because we’re watching!

    STANDING UP AND CLAPPING!!!

  23. Town

    @ Danielle..

Uh, people on MICHELLE OBAMA WATCH care about what’s being said about Michelle Obama and obviously you do too since you clicked on a thread on MICHELLE OBAMA WATCH. If you felt the need to come to Bush’s defense then maybe you should start GEORGE BUSH WATCH or LAURA BUSH WATCH.

  24. SjP

Somebody need to talk me down again!

    RELAX! RELATE! RELEASE! WHOO SAAA!!!

Don’t call me sassy! Don’t call my daughters sassy! If you like to be called sassy – fine! Or if you think FLIF is cute and funny, then show just how classless you really are and put it on a t-shirt. Maybe you’d attract your soul-mate by doing so.

But, for the same reasons I no longer use the phrase “rule of thumb”, I do not use the term “sassy” to describe any woman or girl regardless of her race or ethnicity. Why? Because unlike you, Danielle – I know the origin of the word and the phrase. I suggest you should learn it too before spouting off about “you people”.

And for the record, I would have been equally offended if Alvear had written that Laura Bush was the FLIF. But, of course he would have never disrespected her in that manner. And if he did, he would be drawing unemployment.

    RELAX! RELATE! RELEASE! WHOO SAAA!!!

  25. Dayna

I think that people who are against michelle or who say things bashing her because she is a strong black woman, to me just says ignorance. And possibly they just are not really listening to her speeches. She is intelligent enough to speak on the issues she is passionate about, and i believe people should respect that.

  26. lorraine

i tend to agree with those few who have posted here saying that most of you are overreacting. i read huffpost daily, and i’ve never gotten the feeling that they are in any way “racist”. it’s a liberal political site and therefore it allows people to speak their mind. sometimes, some people might find a thing or two over the line, but i have to agree that the article that you;re all freaking out about was not meant in disrespect. it’s an acknowledgment that the obamas are a sexy couple, and we sure haven’t seen that in in the white house in… well, NEVER. i remember thinking to myself when i saw them dancing on inauguration night, “damn, they’re hot!” are you all telling me that a) i am a creep for thinking that about our- GASP- first couple, and b) that NONE of you thought the same thing about them? i think they’re awesome together. i think they have set a new standard for couples to emulate- that of mutually supportive, smart, SEXY partners.

i think that if we lie in wait for something to offend us, we’ll never be disappointed, because that’s life. sometimes we get offended. but that’s a terrible way to live and a waste of time, imo.

  27. Dee

    Sigh…..

    Lorraine.

I think that for those of us blessed with eyes to see, it is plain, bleedin’ obvious that the First Couple makes for a sexy couple. Not too many people would argue with a description of them as “mutually supportive, smart, sexy, partners”. I’d more than happily go along with that since it describes them, to an absolute T.

However, this isn’t what is being objected to, and well you know it. There is a world of difference between this, and someone thinking it reasonable to opine that the First Lady is FLIF.

(I don’t know. Maybe I didn’t get the memo, but perhaps for 2009, filth is in, crudity is the way to go and we should all be shopping for one of those T-shirts that SJP refers to in her post at Uncouth R Us….)

You are of course free to think that I and others of shared/similar opinions are “overreacting”, and I, and perhaps those others of shared/similar opinions may choose to beg to differ. And, I do beg to differ with you. I do….

  28. Judith Mims

This is so sad that people can publish trash such as this about our First
Family. All I can say is envey is one of the 7 deadly sins. This fool better get right before it is too late. Mrs. Obama has more class in her baby finger than this idiot has in his whole body. We just have to pray for this type of person.

  29. I am not a regular reader of HP, I just happenstanced on the article. I must say that this is the most irresponsible reporting / writing I’ve seen in a while. For it to be allowed is even worse. People who write this way generally are hiding an illness or medication that make them do and say things. They can’t help it, there are no meds that cure ignorance.

  30. Bea

The Holy Scriptures say, “don’t answer a fool, his folly.”
