So I saw all of the commentary on our post about First Lady Michelle Obama enlisting fifth graders to help plant a White House garden so I took the First Lady’s lead and planted something for the first time in five thousand years. Its been at least 15 years since science class.
I started out by going out and buying four packs of seeds. Basil, Chives, Cilantro, and Basil. I chose those for no reason in particular other than they were $1.00 per pack. I also snagged a bag of Miracle Grow potting soil and some Jiffy pots.
I threw some dirt in four Jiffy pots and stuck them on a tray in a window. Just curious to see if I can make something grow.
Will they live or will they die? Will I survive if these plants attract unsavory bugs? Will my grocery bill go down? Ah the drama, the intrigue, the suspense. Who knew chlorophyll could be so riveting. BTW we are NOT installing a bee hive like the First Lady. We’re not that curious.
As an added incentive and just because I am curious, I’ve decided to launch a facebook group for those of us who wanted to take up the arduous task of growing something edible.
So go out and grab a pack of seeds and throw them in some dirt and lets see if we can grow something indoors and keep it alive for longer than a week.

Hopefully you’ll be providing some guidance along the way, for things like when to pinch off first leaves, when to transplant to bigger pot, and drainage. Oh I forgot, have to be careful about mold growing on the outside of those peat pots!

@thegourmetgirl I have no idea what I am doing and if mold start to grow, the whole lot is going straight in the trash. I don’t do mold. i don’t do bugs and I don’t do dirt which is Why I almost didn’t go through with this.

I am excited about this garden as it sends a very powerful message. It brings together many issues about basics, survival, health and the environment. It says to all, “Either DO SOMETHING about it or quit talking.
It was a very bold move. I don’t know if they realised just have pivotal it might prove to be. It could be as piviotal in a positive way as 9/11 was in a negative one. It stomps on some very big toes and a lot of jobs and a lot of meals are at stake.
I wish for the Obama’s a good harvest, a good honey flow and a clean and green America.
Unless, of course, the press are successful in ignoring it like they did the Solar Panels that went up on the White House many years ago.
So keep up the good work, keep the subject alive and it won’t matter then what the media do about it. The RIGHT people will know about it and the dissenters can go their merry way.
