The first lady is the muse of an upcoming book by fashion editor Mandi Norwood. Michelle Style: Celebrating the First Lady of Fashion will hit the stands on May 5. Leah Chernikoff of the Daily News profiled the new book in a recent article:
As Michelle Obama nears her first 100 days as First Lady, a new book celebrates her fabulous fashion choices. “It’s her journey to the White House through the filter of her style,” says former fashion mag editor-in-chief Mandi Norwood, author of “Michelle Style: Celebrating the First Lady of Fashion” (William Morrow, $19.99) out May 5, which chronicles Mrs. O’s signature looks — from the belted purple sheath dress she wore on the night her husband got the nomination, to the $148 White House/Black Market black-and-white print dress she bought off the rack.
What is it that makes the first lady so appealing? According to the article, her appeal stems from the fact that she is just like us:
“Suddenly we had this vision of the next First Lady sitting in bed, next to Barack, shopping online.”
Yes, she’s just like us, and that’s part of the appeal. “In the past, First Ladies have always been slightly aloof,” says Norwood. “You’ve never really been able to emulate their style, even if you wanted to.”
Chernikoff also points out that Mrs. Obama is the epitome of America’s signature style via another comment made by Norwood:
“I think she will reignite what America is known for in fashion and that is classic American sportswear,” says Norwood. “Bright separates, really comfortable clothes, clothes you don’t have to be a millionaire to look good in.”
On a delightfully humorous note, Norwood highlights one specific criticism of the first ladies style. That is, Michelle Obama should accent her stylish outfits with chic purses:
“I’d just love to see her carrying a purse,” she says. “Where does she keep her lip balm?”
Lastly, the article gives us some practical advice on how to create a look inspired by the first lady. They include adding a bow or necklace, choosing elegant textures and fabrics as well as vibrant colors.

Real talk
Michelle needs to tone down her wardrobe so it won’t overpower her message. Her message is so much more life changing and touching than anything she wears. Yet, folks continue to reduce her to silks, plaids, wools, designers and metals. SMDH! She’s a fab chick but lets listen to what she is saying with her words and actions.

Our friend & first lady does not have to hold a candle to her husband! She is busy winning hearts and creating trends! She is planting vegetable garden at the withehouse like my planting a red rose in everyone’s heart and changing their patterns from dark to light and she is doing it at a time that it is being proven that genetic manufacturing vegetables and fruits are poison for body and have no vitamins that the orignial one’s do and it is the economic way of raising family even in the whitehouse where a earthy Michelle shows us you can be who you are even in the Rose Garden!

I really like Michelle Obama’s style – sometimes classic, sometimes elegant, sometimes a little funky – and she doesn’t seem to care what people think about it. I saw this slideshow of some of her fashion highlights for the first 100 days in the White House if you want to check it out too: http://www.bettyconfidential.com/ar/ld/a/one_hundred_days_obama.html

Michelle-Your own style resounds with your own individuality, the coupling of you and your husband, and your loving competence as a mother. It is a reflection of simple yet elegantly complex and refined style everlasting in pattern, fabric and design.
Sharing briefly, I felt the desparate need to leave the US mainland after working diligently in “at-risk,hi-risk” education for 16 years and found an island where I was one of the 15 % token white population. Circumstances demanded I return with my two sons after 15 years from a true environment where we lived as a “villlage raising children”. This simple explanation holds tremendous concepts of life and peoples. Until you and your husband moved your family, values, and cultural “fashion” into the White House, I with many others was fearful of the US destiny; I now feel our children have more hope.
However, fashion is trendy, shortlived and quick to change. Your design represents longevity and timeless style with a husband accentuating and complimenting that depth. Although a true challenge, try to remain in that village until your fashion has become vintage and withstands all the elements – leaving not just an aura of permanence in your final portraits.
