So of course I leave the country for 4 days and a ton of First Lady Michelle Obama news breaks out
. Sometimes it is a trickle and then at others it is a flood of video and information. But apparently late last week, the media went back into their overanalyzation of First Lady Michelle Obama. I guess that counts as news. They just kept replaying a sound bite of her calling “Bo” the dog, “crazy.”
I am still in vacation mode so I have to take time to go back and catch up on all the stories I saw on the news in my hotel room. The neat thing about the hotel was that they had news from all over the planet. No, I did not go to Mexico, but our plane did share the baggage claim area with a few flights from Mexico so hopefully I am safe from the swine flu or whatever plague was unleashed while I was away.
Shay over at the blog, Booker Rising, does some of the best MIchelle Obama posts around. She is featuring a post from Shiloh Musings, a conservative blog based in Shiloh, Israel, writes:called “The Rebranding of Michelle Obama” Shiloh Musings said:
“At one point in their campaign for the United States Presidency, Michelle Obama almost lost it for Barack, when it was revealed that she had stated that it was the first time [as an adult] she was proud to be an American. Michelle has rebranded herself from resentful Black Power to strikingly fashionable domestic goddess. She was a successful lawyer before her husband. Michelle, who like other political wives such as Hilary Clinton, Elizabeth Edwards, Eleanor McGovern etc, is no dumbbell and probably a lot smarter than her husband. Her taking control of her image is impressive and highly professional. I don’t think that anyone doubts her influence over her husband, but she’s more subtle and discreet about it than Hillary was.” Shiloh Musings
Shay from Booker Rising responded:
I’m not sure if I’d say that Mrs. Obama is “a lot smarter” than President Obama. However, she and her team are making smart PR moves with “Operation Softer Michelle”. While at times she has come off as combative (although not for at least five months), I think black nationalists would be surprised at Mrs. Obama’s inclusion in the Black Power category LOL. Shelly O has made the political transformation of a lifetime. Booker Rising
There was no REBRANDING! MIchelle Obama is who she has always been. This angry militant “Black Power” mythology related to Michelle Obama. Whenever I see people attempt to pin the “ABW” label on Michelle Obama I always have to give them the side eye. The path Michelle and her brother took is the exact opposite of the militancy. They went to Princeton, hardly a hotbed of Black radicalism. So like Shay, I have to laugh at trying to make Michelle Obama out to be some radical Black panther.
What these people are really saying is that any Black person that acknowledges in anyway racism, inequity, or injustice is “militant.” Any Black woman that isn’t smiling and tap dancing like the UPN frog ( rest his soul) is “angry.” She was passionate about her husband’s candidacy. She was passionate about the state of the country preceding the campaign. Black women have access to a full range of emotions other than long suffering, soft-shoe-false exuberance, and A-N-G-E-R.
I actually think that the woman we are seeing now if the woman she’s always been. There hasn’t been any rebranding. Her consistent public display of warmth, humor and empathy just isn’t consistent with the mythology. I always said you could tell she wasn’t angry because of the weeMichelles these are not the progeny of an angry woman. Michelle Obama hasn’t changed-she’s just eviscerated the mythology so now the myth writers are re-writing history.

I don´t think Michelle is smarter than her husband, but I agree she has an excellent PR team.

So so true Gina, I too laugh although followed by a sign b/c I feel her pain. As a black woman we sometimes feel like we have to walk on eggshells lest we be labeled an ABW. I wish I could take some of these “conservatives’ into a true militant black person’s world so they could understand that outspoken, and passionate does note equate anger. Michelle Obama continues to be a great role model for African American women and girls. I am curious to see if she takes on any professional activities. I would also love to hear more about Jill Biden and the standard she is setting by continuing to work while her husband is Vice-President!

I absolutely enjoy watching Michelle. I am so proud that she is my first lady. It is very difficult to toe the line between standing up for yourself, and being portrayed as an angry black woman. I go throughout my day in a largely white environment where I have to fake laugh at the “You go girl” comments, and the neck rolling when they are talking to me and noone else. I am glad that America has a glimpse into the lives of professional and family oriented African American families.

Interesting article.
Like you Rob, I too agree Michelle has an excellent PR team.
May I also add, Great job Michelle for getting out there visiting
schools and impacting lives in such an encouraging and
positive way.

Michelle is not smart as her husband?
now how in the hell does one know that?
she’s a graduate of Princeton and Harvard law school
she was his boss at the law firm where they meet
so there is no doubt in my mind that she is just as intelligent as her husband so please stop acting like she doesn’t have a brain
i wish people would stop trying to act as though her only job title was first -lady
* MICHELLE’S ROBINSON OBAMA’S CAREER
Michelle’s impressive resume includes: Former associate dean at the University of Chicago; a member of six boards of directors including the prestigious Chicago Council on Global Affairs, the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and Tree House Foods; and Vice President, Community and External Affairs at the University of Chicago Hospitals. In this position she was responsible for all programs and initiatives that involve the relationships between the hospitals and the community as well as management of the hospitals’ business diversity program.

I, too, believe this is Michelle Obama. THIS is the woman I paid three times to see during the campaign.
I keep on asking folks. ….WHERE IS THE ANGRY MICHELLE?
I asked over and over about giving me proof, and pointing me in the direction of ANGRY Michelle.
All I saw was a self-respecting, intelligent Black woman.
When did that morph into meaning ANGRY BLACK WOMAN?
But, my Black Panther Fist is in the air in agreement with this entire post.

The Republicans have nothing else to talk about. Michelle was never angry. Now that they more or less know that Michelle is not an angry person (Approval rate 79%), Repubs don’t know what to do with themselves. Michelle rocks. Michelle is intelligent. So is President Obama. They both were raised to appreciate intelligence. They love themselves, first, and they love each other. That’s why they got married. That is Why Barack Obama is POTUS and Michelle is FLOTUS. They are equally responsible for making it this far. If Michelle was an angry Black woman, Obama would never be President today. Case closed.

Great post! And I agree with so many of the comments. Missyme, you are right on point. But unfortunately, I don’t believe it’s just the Republicans who “have nothing else to talk about.” It appears to be the vast majority of the mainstream pundit class. And The Black Snob made an interesting point today — Where have all the black pundits gone since the campaign?
We are a long way from being out of the woods in having the First Family understood easily and naturally, and in having the class they come from seen in all of its complexity. Michelle Obama may have a good PR team, but it will soon be time to switch the emphasis from the Obamas as unique individuals and, instead, to show that Michelle and Barack are NOT roses blooming in a desert. There are tens of thousands like them out here.

Michelle Obama is Michelle Obama and if she has made some changes is wise for the public that is not used to assertive women who speak their minds and she is saying what she wants to say anyway and that is what matters! Enough passifying fearful people who do not want to hear assertive women and want empty shells on the shelf!

I do agree that she has a good PR team. However, the First Lady’s main character strength makes their job pretty easy in my estimation.
Because after all – when you are as authentically caring as Michelle Obama – there isn’t too much that can stand against that. Now there may be many attempts at this, but just continue to watch – those attempts will always crumble to the ground!

Wow I’d heard there were Obama fan clubs. It looks like I stepped in one. Hope this crap washes off.
When I look at Michelle Obama I see arrogance and hypocrisy. All of her life she has benefited from White guilt and White charity. Anyone really think Michelle Obama earned her scholarship to Princeton? No. Read Michelle’s pitiful excuse for critical writing – her thesis about being a black kid at a rich college – and you’ll see how immature and unprofessional Michelle Obama is.
Bottom line: Michelle Obama is a parasite.

Lyn, first of all, welcome to Michelle Obama Watch.
You will find not a few admirers of Michelle, here, it’s true, and you’ll find no-one who’s apologetic about that fact, I’m certain. By the way, I don’t understand why you don’t like “crap” when you’ve pitched up carting a ton of your own, but, there we have it…
When I look at your post I see bitterness, and emptiness. From where I sit, White guilt and White charity, as you name it, has absolutely nothing to do with Michelle. She has used a great work ethic, cracking interpersonal skills, intelligence, discipline, patience and much more besides to get to where she is, today.
How many of those qualities do you possess, I wonder?
You’ve shown a good deal of immaturity, your own self; yet another burned bottomed chastising the hardly used kettle….

Sometimes our eyes see the side of a person that we want to see. Sometimes our hearts just don’t chase after the good in what we see.
Sometimes we just don’t want to see at all.
Mrs Obama, First Lady, THE Lady! Your presence does not mean the same to everyone. I am greatful for your beginning. I have confidence for the end results. That’s enough for me to think of life more positively, and that is what my future encouragement to others will be.

I, too, find it interesting to hear and read about how Michelle has changed. The fact of the matter is that she has not. She’s the same person she was before, during, and after the campaign. The fact she is not one to be pigeon-holed, seems to bring great discontent to those who only seek to disbarage her.

At the risk of being labeled a “hater” as well as racist, I still will speak my mind. I don’t know who Ms. Obama is yet. I fully understand how the dreams of man black women have been fulfilled. I have no angst against that. It’s been a long time coming. But that isn’t a reason to hold her up as a paragon. What has she done? Just being the wife of the first black president isn’t enough. She should not be given a pass for that. Every first lady has been pilloried or revered according to the media’s largesse. Many times remarks were undeserved. I just say that it is too soon to get on the bandwagon. Let’s face it: all of us would change given the assets she has at her disposal. It doesn’t make her smart or dumb. I doubt if anyone in this forum will be objective about her. All of you seem to have the same agenda, which is to defend her, right or wrong. Time will tell.
Apr 28th, 2009

first of all no one is defending her right or wrong
what has she done to be villified?
it’s fine you don’t know her yet
we don’t know what all she’s going to do in the future either
but we are proud of her right now
Apr 28th, 2009
Judy
Dana, I understand you’re proud. But I ask you, has any first lady deserved to be villified? Did you speak out then? Were you proud of them? If it’s wrong for one, it’s wrong for all.

i think maybe you should explain yourself better
you sound confused
yes i was proud of Hillary Clinton when she was first lady
and i even liked Laura Bush
and Mrs Bush was well liked and respected also
so i don’t see what the prob with people liking and respecting Michelle
you and others act as though she isn’t worthy

Any woman with strong opinions runs the risk of being labeled “angry.” A black woman with strong opinions? Head for the hills, she’s a radical/communist/pinko/lesbian/feminist/insert your favorite hate-word here.
Apr 29th, 2009
Judy
Dana,
I don’t think I’m confused. I said that the last several first ladies have been villified. Some of them were Republicans. Was it Democrats that bashed them? You admit to liking two of them, That’s fine. I’m not saying you had to like any of them. But all of them had one thing in common: they were married to the President. Michelle is in the same position. I liked some and didn’t like others. There is nothing in my posts to say that I feel Michelle is unworthy. I think that is bias on your part and perhaps you aren’t willing to have a dialogue. I feel strongly that anyone in her position needs to have defenders if for no other reason to point out the bigots and idiots among us. I think it’s wrong that any first lady has been subject to ridicule. My point is, I’ll wait and see before I put Michelle on a pedestal. She is a strong woman, she is the President’s wife, she is a mother. For that she has my respect. The adulation will take a little longer.
Apr 29th, 2009
danadevin85
yeah right
Apr 29th, 2009
Dee
Okay…
You know, Judy, I found it really telling when you came on here, seeming to have decided that “black men and women” were holding the First Lady up as a “paragon” and made the – very strange, to me – comment that those of us on MOW all “seem to have the same agenda, which is to defend her right or wrong.”
It clearly isn’t “only” Black men and women who find Michelle, a person, worthy of admiration, as I’m sure you well know, and if you or anyone else can kindly point out the “wrong” she’s done to deserve the brickbats hurled at her by the likes of – the now strangely silent, Lyn – I’d be most grateful. Also, why on earth I’m thinking would I want to defend anyone if they’d clearly done something that needed to be picked up on.
I’m not into paragons, myself, all of us being human, and therefore, less than perfect. Adulation doesn’t do it for me, either, as this must be one of the surest ways to be quickly disappointed.
Furthermore, I have absolutely no idea where you see “bias” anywhere in Dana’s perfectly reasonable comments. As to her perhaps, not being “willing to have a dialogue”….uhhh..isn’t that exactly what she was engaging in?!
Perhaps, she just decided she’d expended enough of her precious energy on you, and had other things to do….
Apr 30th, 2009
Judy
Dee & Dana, I never said black men and women were the only people who hold Michelle in admiration. I don’t need to point out any wrong because as you said, she has done nothing wrong. Lyn is one of the idiots I mentioned before. I am not of her ilk. Both of you have eluded to things that I have not said. You have assumed. That is bias to me. As for dialogue, I received mine. A dialogue to me is when people can discuss an issue without rancor. One learns from that. There’s always another side worth listening to. I’m sorry if Dana, as you said Dee, expended enough of her precious energy on me. I did not come on here feeling this was a black blog. I came on here to get information, perhaps from people who had different feelings than mine. In doing so, perhaps I could gain a different perspective. Maybe I could garner more understanding and information I was lacking. Both of you seem to tell me that is wrong. I don’t think I’ve been hostile to you. I am not Lyn who deserves everyone’s scorn. I’m not here to malign anyone. I guess I just wanted to learn and understand. I feel openess and honesty is the way to bridge many gaps. Because I believe that, I will keep trying.
Apr 30th, 2009
Dee
Judy, we used to have a long standing West End theatre production called “The Mousetrap” and rather like it, I have the feeling that this one could run, and run and run and….
Sooo. With that in mind, these will be my final offerings on this thread, and then from my point of view, I’ll put this one to bed. Not least because, although I’m not thick (and before you say it, yes, I know you never said I was…) I’m having difficulty understanding and keeping up with your train of thought.
It is great that you say you’re trying to garner more understanding and information; I like to do the same, and since there’s loads that I don’t know about loads of topics it’s good to be curious and inquisitive, and see what others can teach me and what I can learn. With that in mind, there is no way that I am going tell anyone that it is wrong to try to gain greater understanding. From where I sit, there is nothing in my comments whatsoever – or Dana’s – to suggest otherwise.
Also, neither of us has “eluded (sic) to things that you have not said.” I’ve quoted directly from your earlier comments, so if you believe assumptions are being made, and we’ve shown bias in any way, I’ll just have to respect your opinion, scratch my head in complete and utter bafflement, and beg to differ.
Peace to you, and yours.

the new wall street journal piece on desiree rogers goes all out in making the first lady and the white house social secretary as manipulative marketers seeking to do nothing more than lie their way into the hearts of america. the profile is one of the worst pieces of journalism i have read. http://magazine.wsj.com/features/the-big-interview/desiree-rogers/
quotes are taken out of context, “experts” judge the first family and MO’s agenda as if she were some manchurian candidate.

These pathetic anti-Black female racists are getting more desperate and stupid all the time. People see throught their garbage and are coming to Michelle’s defense left, right, and sideways because they KNOW that this great lady is being treated unfairly. So to these haters, like jealous White women Lyn & Judy, it gives me GREAT pleasure to point out that your mess is failing, HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Judy,
Not that you need defending but I don’t think it is fair for anyone to put you in the same breath as Lyn.
Perhaps this will help you. I don’t know you, don’t know anything about you. But I assume that you are the kind of woman who is willing to be wrong, to ask tough questions, to stick your neck out, to have a dialogue, to listen, to share and to do some otherwise hard things. From this little exchange alone, I am proud of you Judy. I don’t need to know anything else, because I know how hard it is to do the aforementioned things. You could easily sit around with like minded individuals and only talk about the things and people and First Ladies that you like and not pursue what it means to grow as a person and as an American. I will defend you from people who seek to malign you. You are not a racist.
Maybe that will give you some insight into how some of us on this site feel about First Lady Michelle Obama. Many of know how hard it is to be the first, and to be the First Black First Lady is, in and of itself, enough for us to be proud of now, in this moment. We are proud of her for something that you feel is not enough. For us, it is more than enough.

There is no reason to “worship” Michelle Obama – or any other first lady. I’m sure that the black community is proud to have a black first lady – and, it is understandable to be proud. I am old enough to remember the adulteration that Jackie O received (especially from the irish catholics) when Kennedy was elected. At the time, it was a huge thing to have an irish catholic elected. People hero worshipped jack kennedy and his wife and his two adorable children. They were the picture (literally the pictures in Life magazine!) of the perfect family life! Now, of course, we have learned that 1. Jack was a serial adulterer – having nude women in the White House swimming pool; he was also very ill with Addison’s disease 2. He had a long affair with an intern in the White House (the book is coming out shortly) 3. There was something unseemly going on with Marilyn Monroe and one of JFK’s mistresses he shared w/ a mafia don; 4. Jackie was miserable and spent a ton of $ of clothes; 5. she was on Onassis’ yacht escaping from JFK while in the White House….. it goes on and on. All I’m saying is that this hero worship is probably unjustified; black women be proud of yourselves but don’t get crazy about this hero worship stuff ……. nothing is what it seems on the surface in any couples relationship. I think Michelle Obama is having to deal with an awful lot of adjustment; and, I think it is not easy for her – I think being married to a man of ambition means you are second to his ambitions (no matter what!) and that there are huge adjustments to being in the public eye. Also, I do perceive her as angry sometimes – but I think she will learn to let her anger go as time goes on….. to be in the public eye and to be first lady is a major major adjustment for her – and, I think she is trying her best….
Jun 8th, 2009
bibi
PS. I saw Jackie O – close up at a benefit ….. we were sitting a table away and I was able to look at her for a couple of hours….. interestedly enough, she was quite “odd” looking in person (photographed beautifully however!). Her eyes were too far apart – kind of “fish” eyes – and, the woman had huge feet …… I mean you couldn’t miss these feet! Anyway, the point is don’t get crazy – ladies – with the hero worship thing. Jackie O had feet of clay! (I couldn’t resist that analogy – after talking about her feet!) – and, I’m sure that Michelle is far from perfect. Just remember, ladies, that you don’t need to worship or admire anybody else…. just work on yourselves – if you think you need to – and, remember you are good enough! I know that it is hard to be a woman in a culture where beauty is supposedly everything and it must be harder to be a black woman – (I’m white and am really annoyed that I do not have straight blonde hair hair and am instead stuck with this frizzy brown stuff)…. I can’t imagine what a drag it must be to be a black women and subjected to all these media grief about your looks and never being able to measure up. I know its shallow but these issues are real for most woman. I don’t mean to diminish the reality of the black experience and the difficulty of succeeding in America but I urge everyone to understand that most americans have problems (except for Jill Biden – whose only problem is being married to Joe Biden!) With best wishes for all of you!

I see that Lyn, the white supremacist, has conveniently erased his blog (google “blog from wembley park” and you’ll see what I mean) in the wake of the shooting at the Holocaust Museum. I wonder what hole this racist slug has crawled into, sure to emerge in a new incarnation in order to spew his vile hatred?
