This past Wednesday marked the 100th day of the Obama Administration. As the Nation assessed the accomplishments and goings on of the President, the First Lady was also not immune to the scrutiny of her actions during these first 100 days. A quick Yahoo search returns over 26 million hits for the phrase: Michelle Obama’s first 100 days. It is quite clear that every move made, every word spoken, and every piece of clothing worn is bound to hit the headlines.
First Lady Michelle has spent her first 100 days espousing her message of family, opening the White House to America, reaching out to children, visiting federal agencies, and promoting national service. The First Lady’s commitment to service is no secret and nor is it short lived. From her days as the founding Executive Director of of the Chicago chapter of Public Allies, an AmeriCorps program that prepares young people for public service to volunteering at soup kitchens, she continues to do more than “talk the talk” – she “walks the walk”.
In fact, on her 100th day, First Lady Michelle was a volunteer at the Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, D.C. Yet, it appears that no matter what the FLOTUS does – someone will always find something negative to report. And her 100th day was no exception. It seems that volunteering at the food back to mark her 100th day as First Lady was far less important than the sneakers she wore.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the sporting tennis shoes worn by the First Lady and designed by the French designer Lanvin retail for about $540. The Star points out that the blogosphere is all a buzz with the First Lady’s choice of footwear at the event:
One writes, “Pricey sneakers to volunteer at a food bank in tough economic times invites criticism.” Another rushed to the First Lady’s defence, noting, “Previous first ladies have worn labels like Oscar de la Renta and Badgley Mischka at everyday events, those hardly come cheap. Mrs. O isn’t dressing any more extravagantly than any other first lady.”
I understand that the First Lady is a fashion icon and that she has certainly made a much needed statement (imo) on style. But, knowing how much she pays for her clothes or shoes is just not high up there on my priority list. Besides, is there anyone in the entire world who really thought that the First Lady takes advantage of the bogo sales occassionally offered by that less-pay chain.
All I can say is thank goodness none of the reporters following the First Lady have x-ray vision; because then folks would no doubt be talking about how much she pays for a push-up, under-wire, padded, or unpadded. Which is way TMI for me.

I agree. I also think other first lady’s have worn things that were out of the price range of most Americans with a lot less fanfare.

Mrs. Obama has changed my life just with the strength of her character. Her appearance has no bearing on her courageous spirit and incredible presence she has to captivate another human beings attention to listen with their heart and not just their ears!! I am pleading to the people of America, “Work Together for the Change!’ We have to open our hearts and souls to rebuild relationships and bridges so that we may cross into territory that is unknown and be not afraid because we have united, our force of solidarity can be and will be unbreakable

The First Lady is showing by example that no one is too important or too wealthy to serve and help others. There is nothing wrong with her sneakers! The important thing is what she’s doing, not what she’s wearing!
I commend her for being willing to get down and serve no matter what she has on!!!! That says a lot! A public servant she most certainly is, an elitist she is NOT!
I’m looking forward to the next 100 days, and the next 4-8 years of having community-oriented leadership in the White House.

When you hear criticisms about clothes, just ignore it. I care far more about helping to feed people who are down on their luck in D.C. than what she is wearing. I believe she bought it with her own money. If the government purchased it for her, I would join in the criticism. But what people do with their own income is up to them. Unless it is paid for on the tabs of the government, I don’t care.
If Lanvin sneakers is the only criticism, that says that her critics have nothing to talk about.

Okay people relax, relax, relax will you about the sneakers. Honestly to Heck with what FoxNews think. How many of them were at the place helping the needy? I’m struggling, but I don’t expect the first Lady to dress down for me. She didn’t have to be at the place helping out, she could have been sitting back relaxing in the White House, letting the staff wait on her, but she wasn’t were she? This isn’t her first time reaching out to the needy, and I know it won’t be her last. The only person who really have any right to complain about the sneakers was the President. I haven’t heard him say anything yet. What is it? Do people look at everything she wear, and see what it cost? Leave the lady alone, we are bless with a dam good First Lady.

It’s like when the First Lady were overseas, certain people tried to make such a big deal out of her hugging the Queen. But you know what the most memorible part of the trip to me was? Yes the First Lady looked wonderful, but it was the First Lady visit to that school in London were she spoke to those young girls, and her speech. It wasn’t what she had on, it was the connection to those young girls and how she made those girls feel special. If I’m not mistaken it wasn’t a school of priviledge young girls. I will never judge this First Lady by some pair of sneakers, and we need to stop always talking about what she is or isn’t wearing. There is so much more to this First Lady, than that.

My point exactly! IMO, in just a mere 100 days, she has completely revamped the role of First Lady. What she is doing – what she has always done – is far more important than what she wears. Yet, it is amazing to me that what she wears always seems to overshadow what she is doing in the media.

Well, it seems to be far more important to have media article after media article on clothing/choice of footwear, and by way of contrast, virtually nothing on the potentially far more wide reaching impact of someone’s actions.
Why write about Michelle motivating and inspiring others to help their fellows when there’s clothes, shoes, and hair to fixate on!
Ah, well. Perhaps, if enough of us continue to pipe up on this subject we’ll eventually see more balanced coverage of the First Lady, and other prominent women (what is it with those dreadful HuffPo clothes polls?!).
It’s great to see Michelle volunteering, in this way.

Okay, next time she will go bare-footed and faux news will complain that she’s not behaving as a First Lady should. Give the Lady a break. Perhaps Faux News thinks the sneaker are too good for her.

I think Obama and Michelle are a Class Act. They are very humber and are doing what they promised. We should have had a black President and First Lady long time ago. I think this country needs a real shot of Change. The same old politics of the white southern Politicians has ruined this country.
Obama and Michelle should stand upto these DO NOTHING Republicans and forge forward in shaping the future of this country.
They have been in the White House only 100 days and they have done more than I can say the previous Presidents had attempted to do. Please give them the opportunity to clean up the freaking mess the freaking republicans have left behind.
If these Republicans manage their own finances, they would be bankrupt faster than you can say BANKRUPT. They have no sense of governing and managing the people’s money.
GOOD RIDDENS. Republicans should not EVER be allowed to govern again for a long to come.
Sorry I am venting but OBAMA’s win has put me at rest and I am not as stressed as in the past.

I have noticed a few articles about the price of her sneakers online, but surely the fact is that the right-wing will desperately jump on anything they can to insult the first lady, they complain when her clothes are inexpensive and from normal stores and now they complain about her expensive items it is strange that they seemed to ignore Cindy McCains $300,000 oufit that she had picked out to wear to the Republican convention during a hurricane. We know the Fox news agenda is to demonise the first lady but we should show them the contempt they deserve.

Good for her! Let her wear what she pleases; let her arms be bare or covered; let her hair be up or down; let her have fake lashes—SO WHAT!!
She’s a breath of fresh air, I believe that she is a REAL person and she certainly has my respect AND my prayers! I pray for God’s protection and guidance for the Obama Family. God Bless them all!!!

If the best they can do is attack a woman for buying a pair of sneakers, knock themselves out.

I’m sorry, y’all. But this is a bad look for the First Lady. In the scheme of things, this is small potatoes when we consider the state of the economy, the war, and a hundred other depressing, worrisome things. But rockin’ designer ANYTHING at a Food Bank is done in bad taste.
I can’t stand Sarah Palin and Cindy McCain. But had they pulled this stunt (and, arguably they have), would you be so forgiving…?

Well I hate to break it to them but all her shoes that she wears are designer ie Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin and they start at $400 a pop, plus that doesn’t even include the designer clothing she wears,So I don’t see what the big deal is other than them being IMHO absolutely fugly.

She has to learn as she go’s, the economy is bad, the first lady is not responsible for that, but, she is responsible for having wisdom, where were her advisor’s? the first lady is being watched like a hawk, who would let her leave the white house with five hundred dollar’s sneaker’s on at a time like this! the truth is the truth, that’s a lot of money to pay for a pair of tennis shoe’s, and to wear them to a homeless shelter’s! more wisdom is needed.

*Testing, testing, one, two, are you receiving..?!*
I’ve tried to post another comment, and then when it didn’t appear on- screen, tried again, only to be told I’d duplicated my comment.
Just checking whether all is okay again, before maybe giving it another try!

She did NOT wear them to a homeless shelter. There where NO needy people there. They where with other congressional wives putting together food that would be LATER distributed to those in need. Besides when Princess Diana visited homeless shelters and aids hospices she was dressed to the nines. What does it matter what shoes she wears. Its the gesture that counts. Besides if all people stop buying things they can afford this recession will last longer. If you can afford it do your duty and stimulate the economy.

Okay let me get this straight. The media are on our First Lady because of what she wore on her feet that day in which she volunteered her free time to help enrich the lives of her fellow citizens, yet magazines like US Weekly run sections such as “Who Wore It Best?”-”celebrities” who walk down the street everyday spending lavish amounts of money buying shoes that cost around the same amount of money if not more than Michelle’s. Before she was First Lady she made a great amount of money in her career, I think she’s entitled to treating herself, and who knows those could have been a gift to her.

Sorry haters those sneakers rock.If I could afford them Id buy em too.And as a girl with a shoe fettish I might just charge them any way since Im sure Lanvin dont got layaway. In reality shoes are the most important part of any ensemble from the boardroom to the beach.I have thrown away brand new shoes both cheap and expensive if they didnt give what you need a shoe to give…proper support ; balance and comfort. Also I am of the strong opinion that pretty feet deserve pretty shoes no matter what the cost or who pays as long as its not a jailable offense.Besides the intergrety of the First couple makes critisizisms of this sort seem just like what they are……petty and uncalled for.
