This week MOW went international as the First Lady, Mrs Robinson, & the weeMichelles traveled with the President to the G8 Summit. While Mrs Obama was away the blogosphere was all a buzz. Stories ranged from the VBH shiny black alligator manila clutch, that was reported to be $5,950, the arrogance of the First Lady (that was later amended to include a statement to Michelle Obama Watch fanatics), and an old rumor has resurfaced in a small corner of the blogosphere. Here’s a roundup of the First Lady’s week abroad…

She said goodbye to Russia, after charming the Russians…

Ciao to to Italy…

First Lady Michelle Obama meets with Italy’s First Lady Clio Napolitano
Toured Rome with the weeMichelles…

Chatted it up with Olabintan Nwanse, wife of International Fund for Agricultural Development President…

Donned a veil to meet with the Pope at the Vatican…

The NY Daily News reported that Italian luxury goods manufacturer VBH rep Kelly Vitko boasted that the First Lady carried their black manila alligator clutch, valued at $5,950 in Moscow earlier this week. After the White House clarified that the First Lady was carrying an $875 VBH patent leather clutch. The VBH rep then stated that she’d made an assumption and misidentified the bag and went on to say, “it’s definitely ours (manila bag).”
Barbara, of Mommy Life, accused the First Lady of being as arrogant as Barack (The President) and later issued a statement to Michelle Obama Watchers:
“btw, to all the MichelleObamaWatch fanatics visiting here and accusing me of being racist, unchristian, etc – I would be criticizing ANY American leader who behaved in such an arrogant/elitist way while the rest of the country is struggling. Christlike leadership is humble and servantlike – not raising itself on the backs of the people.”
Barbara’s original post stated:
“Once again, while Barack is on government business, Michelle and the girls are touring in high style – yet another big tour at taxpayer expense. Extra planes, vehicles, accommodations, security details.
Doesn’t it seem like aristocratic/elitist behavior to be touring Europe in such high style – with stylists in tow a la Madonna, carrying a 6000. handbag for a walk in the woods – while people at home are grappling with unemployment and no money for their own humble vacations?
And once again, the White House is refusing to release the costs for the enormous extra expense involved in Barack and Michelle’s Great Adventure. This from the administration that promised transparency and above-board politics. Now spending like there’s no tomorrow while killing the American dream for the citizenry.
What a pair of opportunists!”
I need a little help here. Can anyone recall the cost of any of the former First Ladies’ wardrobes being so strongly scrutinized? Have any of them ever been accused of being elitist or aristocrats for allowing their young children to accompany them on trips abroad? Are the First Lady of the United States and her children supposed to ride a public tour bus? Hmmm arrogant, could that be a code word for something else?
An old rumor resurfaced. Jennifer Roche of About.com: Chicago wrote:
“This morning I was reviewing photos of Michelle Obama while on her trip to Russia, and something seemed amiss.
The usually indefatigable, radiant First Lady looked exhausted. Even nauseous. And, then there’s the possible bump. Maybe she just has a bad case of flu, but apparently others noticed it and the rumor that she might be pregnant has been flying around DC, too.
If true, imagine what a nationwide journey and 24/7 non-stop media blitz for seven months that will be…”
As much as I would love to see another weeMichelle (or Barack III) in the White House, my mother always taught me it was rude to ask a lady her age and completely unacceptable to ever ask if she’s pregnant.
And now MOW heads to Ghana…

The First Lady and weeMichelles arrive in Accra with the President

The Obama haters are in full force. They have nothing better to do but talk bad about Michelle and the girls. They are not exploiting the girls; Sasha and Malia are on summer break and the trip on Air force One will cost the same with or without them. I don’t care how much Michelle’s clothes cost because it is her money. People need to look at the elephant in the room, they have so many haters because they are black. The haters don’t think the Obama’s are worth spending so much money on and think that they should have a say in what Michelle wears, does and so forth. This is going to be a long eight years.

The whole baby-bump thing cracks me up. Michelle O is still young enough to be having MONTHLY belly bloating, fatigue, nausea … it happens, people, it’s OK, it goes away in a few days. Then comes back in a month, dammit. The gossipers must have all been on bcp for so many years they can’t imagine the more obvious explanation.

I do not recall such criticism of presidents’ children when they’ve been taken abroad. For example, Chelsea Clinton traveled, and even the Clintons’ most vociferous, loud-mouthed opponents didn’t complain, as I recall. In addition, when presidents’ families do travel, serious security arrangements are required, as they are in the States. This is inescapable.
Nancy Reagan was criticized for her wardrobe (and for “borrowing” clothing from designers without declaring it). It’s worth remembering that Ronald Reagan entered office during a major recession, and there was a view that he and his wife had a somewhat imperial view of their roles. Doesn’t anyone remember the White House china scandal?
Finally, there was criticism of Jackie Kennedy’s quite expensive designer wardrobe (partly paid for by Joe Kennedy, at least during the campaign), along with her Francophilia, which was considered elitist and pretentious by some. The Kennedys, incidentally, had a British nanny for their children, and Jackie Kennedy had a Hispanic lady’s maid, though I don’t know whether this raised anyone’s eyebrows at the time.
I think what we’re seeing here is a reaction to the combination of a relatively young, fashion-conscious First Lady, who also has young children to whom she and her husband want to give new and special experiences, and the economic crisis. (And, I’m sorry to say it, but I think there is clearly some resentment, in some quarters, of the fact that a highly-educated and affluent black couple are occupying the White House and enjoying the privileges that presidents and their families always enjoy. People simply are not accustomed to this.) This confluence of somewhat unusual factors has resulted in rather more scrutiny, along with rather more hostility and criticism directed towards the First Lady, than we normally see.
I do think, by the way, that Mrs. Obama could dial down a bit on the expensive wardrobe items, given the current economy. We naturally want our First Ladies to look good, because while they were not elected to office, they do help represent the country, particularly abroad. However, as much as I love fashion, I’ve been taken aback by the cost of some of Mrs. Obama’s clothes; the $500 Lanvin sneakers didn’t thrill me, nor does this $875 handbag. A little thoughtful judgment wouldn’t come amiss.

Yes, the nation’s First Family does represent the American nation both at home and abroad. However, the Obamas were wealthy before they came to the White House. Personally, I think it is essential for Mrs. O (and other First Ladies) to maintain a certain image as trendsetters as they would be equally criticized if they weren’t. I think we have to compare each First Lady differently. No one criticized Mrs. Bush (wife of President George W.) of her clothing expenses (she loved her de la Renta!). At the same time, Mrs. Bush was not constantly in the public eye as much as Mrs. Obama is. I cannot think of at least one First Lady that was not fashion-forward or conscious of what they wore.
And as much as Mrs. O wears high-end designer labels, we also have to give her snaps for wearing the ready-to-wear labels as well. In my opinion, she looks fierce in whatever she wears!

I sense where people are trying to make something out of nothing. It does not bother me one bit, what Michelle Obama spends on her clothes. It is President Obama who is paying for it, isn’t it? He does get a salary, don’t he? Even if Mrs. Obama just spent five dollars for her handbag, it doesn’t help me one way or another. Really doesn’t bother me. About the baby rumor. I think if the First Lady was pregnant she would let the public know.I have a sister who paid five hundred dollars for a handbag. Me, even if times were good I wouldn’t spend fifty for one. That’s me though. I still like my First Lady.

I find all this really funny because wasn’t it not so long ago big name fashion designers were upset that the First Lady wasn’t wearing their designs, and how if she did start wearing their high priced designs it would actually boost the fashion industry (which was declining at the time). Now every little piece of clothing or accessory she wears is scrutinized.
If Michelle Obama wasn’t looking up to par as a First Lady they would be complaining about that.

The First Lady like all other celebrities are GIVEN designer clothing and accessories to wear for FREE.This is a brilliant marketing strategy as her high visibility gets the designer’s name mentioned in the world media. What concerns me though is the emphasis that is put on what a woman wears. Women of all races should respect each other more “a woman is more than her clothes, she is what she knows”

@LILI thanks for the history lesson. I was a young child when Reagan was in office, but I do have memories of Mrs Reagan wearing a lot of red. I also have fond memories of my grandfather’s very colorful descriptions of Reaganomics. However I don’t think that the First Lady should dial down the expensive wardrobe items.
I agree with GAY GUY. I think she has done an excellent job of balancing ready to wear with her high end choices. No matter what she wears she will be criticized because there are people who have a problem with a Black woman being referred to as the First Lady & representing the US. If she wore less expensive clothing they would probably attribute her fashion sense to her upbringing & say she’s not worthy of the title. She’s damned if she do, damned if she don’t. But she does look fabulous in whatever she wears.

Have any of these complainers regarding Michelle Obama’s expenditures, etc., been so vocal during previous administration. The Bush twins went to Africa, Laura Bush went to see the Pope, and on and on and on. Were expenditures questioned then? Personally, I doubt it much.

I have absolutely no problem with what Mrs. O spends on HER wardrobe. It seems to me that with this type of recession if we guilt people into not spending money, then in the long run the worse off we are. With this recession we want people who can AFFORD to spend to spend money. So therefore if I can afford to buy a nice car I will do so, knowing that by spending money that I can AFFORD to spend will hopefully keep some people employed. So I don’t get this guilt tripping…so SPEND…SPEND SPEND but make sure you can afford it.

The first lady is a college educated, articulate, high salaried professional who by the way doesn’t collect a pay check as FLOTUS, she can wear what she wants, after all didn’t she earn it? As far as travel is concerned how else are they supposed to get around, Greyhound? It’s the President and his family, their safety is the number one priority for the country.
If you haters put as much ENERGY into trying to analyze and correct the many problems our country faces, maybe and only then will we get back on track as a nation.
But as always as Michelle often does she isn’t paying you leeches any attention and you can’t handle it.

I believe the First Lady does have an image to uphold and Mrs. Obama is mixing her wardrobe with designer and such stores as JCrew. I also think it is wonderful to take the children along and not leave them in the White House for week. They are giving their children opportunities which many Americans would like to be able to offer their children. The President attested to this when In Ghana he said it was important for the girls to see the Slave Castles as they (girls) are living a “blest life.” Now, the one thing I do feel is the Obamas should begin to focus on whats going on in America for a while. And finally, I agree with one of the writers that Mrs. Obama looked tired and exhausted, if you noticed, she did not speak publicly during this trip. It may look like charmed life, but you are always on stage and thats not an easy existance I am sure.

If my hubby made $400,000/yr. plus an expense account and we didn’t have to pay rent/mortgage nor any of the other day to day or monthly expenses of the average household or family, I’m pretty sure I’d do a bit of elaborate shopping. Let’s not forget that many designers love to adorn those in the spotlight with their complimentary designs. Who better than a beautiful, fit, intelligent and discerning young first lady?

Why does Michelle family members go on these trips? Why do we never see Maya, Barack sister. Seems as if only michelle family members enjoy the perks of Barack being President. I understand about the Keyans because they are not Americans. However, May is an American.

I reference to the comment pertaining to why the Obamas take extended family on these trips. Well, we really do not know who the Roosevelts, Eisenhowers, Kennedys, Johnsons, Carters, Reagans, Nixons, Fords, Bush Sr., Clintons, and Bush, Jr. took with them when they travelled. So, let’s not be hasty and think only the Obamas are taking extended family. It is probably comforting to the Obama daughters to have extended family along on these trips so they have memories to share with other family and not just the secret service. You mentioned the President’s sister was not there, and probably for good reason and by the way I did not see Mrs. Obamas brother and his family. So, its all six and a half of a dozen. Why not let them have some enjoyment and yes, I’m sure if we had these perks we would certainly include our family some of the time. It is disconcerting that many Americans are finding fault with so much the Obamas are doing. I’ve lived through ten presidents and and never heard the level of criticism not related to policy issues in my life thus far. It does not speak well of the American people and we quickly are living up to the image as “The Ugly American” right here in America.

Can we not forget that this is the summertime. And as such, most families go on vacation in the summer, so why should the Obamas be any different? Well for the President it’s also business….he is only killing two birds with one stone (goodness I don’t like that saying).
Having the grandmother their is also a help in watching the kids.
Anyways paying for the kids to go with their parents is the same as if Malia and Sasha stayed in Washington. They would still need Secret Services, car service, and other things in Washington, DC.

RealtyChic, First Ladies are not given clothes and jewelry for free; they are not legally permitted to accept such gifts — at least not without declaring them on tax returns. That’s why Nancy Reagan got into trouble.
Don’t mistake me: it is certainly true that Mrs. Obama pays for her own clothes and therefore can buy and wear what she pleases. I’ve very much enjoyed observing her wardrobe choices over the last several months. I am simply suggesting that such choices as $500 sneakers are perhaps not such a good idea in the current economic climate. However, there’s plenty of room for debate on that subject.

Pat, like you I’ve noted that the First Lady is “mixing her wardrobe” with upmarket, higher cost clothing and more “down to earth” selections.
Moving on, as for the trainers, I’m sure I read somewhere that The First Lady has also purchased and worn a $59 pair of trainers, so given that she has those and the $500 ones, she’ll probably ensure she gets her money’s worth on both pairs, and the cost-per-wear will work out to be reasonable enough.

I have lived through at least 8 different families occupying the White House. This time around the media coverage and scrutiny is just amazing to me.
I personally do not give a damn about how much money Michelle spends on her clothes. In reality, we know that there are sistas with far less economic means rocking fashions that break their budgets. And many of them do not have a high public profile.
Maybe it’s just me-but I dislike fashion watching anyway. It always seems to bring out the worst in women.

Alas, though I am a regular J. Crew customer, and I mix my J. Crew “downmarket” clothes with much higher-end items (I recently bought a Roberto Rodriguez jacket for $700 and spent almost $1,000 on J. Crew clothes — shorts, t-shirts, a metallic skirt, cashmere cardigan — last spring), many Americans regard J. Crew to be extremely expensive. I was a bit shocked when I mentioned to someone that I’d bought a simple, merino-wool turtleneck sweater at J. Crew for $78 — cheap, in my view — and was told in no uncertain terms that the average American couldn’t think about spending $78 on a sweater. The lady told me that $80 was what she spent on her weekly grocery bill for herself and her two children.
Perhaps we need to consider that.

This morning’s Chicago Tribune includes a long article on Mrs. Obama’s Chief of Staff, Susan Sher. Ms. Sher herself described the $540 Lanvin sneakers as a “glitch.”
As someone who lives in Hyde Park, Chicago, and whose husband shared an employer with Mrs. Obama (and Ms. Sher and the President himself), I really have to suggest that dismissing overly-costly clothes right now isn’t a good idea. If Ms. Sher recognizes that the Lanvin sneakers were a bad choice, then perhaps the rest of us should pay attention.
Jul 20th, 2009
Dee
Lili, I note your comment that Ms. Sher described the Lanvin trainers as a “glitch”which also suggests to me a recognition that such expensive purchases are not habitual as much as anything else….
I still don’t have any problem with the First Lady purchasing $540 trainers, or $59 trainers.
Recalling a time when I wasn’t working, and was short on funds, my thoughts were that for a period of time there were certain things that were financially going to be well beyond my reach, and I simply adjusted my spending habits, accordingly. It didn’t occur to me for a second that just because I could no longer afford to buy certain things that those that could, shouldn’t. This line of thinking is one that I really don’t understand, too well….

Oh, Aminah, I’ve been meaning to say thank you for pulling together all of the beautiful photographs.

Indeed I think it is much ado about nothing. The Obamas are just lovely, they are black and that’s a worrying thought for some. Just be fair and take your mind back to other Presidents’ wives. Was all this scrutiny done? If she were frumpy then that would please a lot of critics who would say ‘ see she (they’re) is not suitable for the White House. Well it was built by the blood and sweat of slaves so all are entitled…
