I do not care what y’all say, I’m still not down with the whole “Lets throw a bee hive on the south lawn.” Thing. As you know moi has been following First Lady Michelle Obama’s gardening efforts. I was taken aback when Mrs. Obama told school children she was installing a bee hive along with the garden. We have previously covered the numerous times I was stung by bees as a child, on the foot, multiple times in my fingers ( yes, I shouldn’t have been trying to “catch” then, but that’s not the point) I got stung in the eye by a dirt diver. Needless to say, I don’t like bees.

Well anywhoo, the First Lady has harvested her first crop of honey and its getting rave reviews:
The first beehive has finally produced some honey, and we hear it tastes and looks splendid. First beekeeper Charlie Brandts tells us that it has a hint of citrus, a sweet local trait, and that the first honey pull totaled 43 pounds. But don’t look for it at the supermarket. Most will be used by the White House chefs, and some may go out as gifts. Washington Whispers
SO send your requests for the White House honey in today
For those of you following my multiple failures at indoor gardening, you will be happy to know that today I had my first harvest.

Oh yes I did. I snapped off a sprig of cilantro and it actually tasted like cilantro form the store just better. It was really good and I really thought about ripping it all out of the pot and making some fish tacos, but I couldn’t bring myself to decimate the plant I’ve worked 4 months to grow! HAHA I kill myself to garden and then I don’t want to eat the plants

Gina, congrats on your indoor garden! I get stung by bees, wasp, etc almost every year. Last year I visited a woman who had a rooftop bee hive. The honey was delicious. I went home and started searching for accessories, including bees, to start my own. My husband quickly informed me that it was either him or the bees. Needless to say I never got that bee hive. Maybe if I say look the First Lady has one, I may be able to get my own now.

You might not like bees….but they sure like you, LOL.
If avoided, as in not chased, harassed or swung at, bees are just fine around people, it’s when you take notice of them that the problems start

I’m glad that the First Lady’s first honey harvest is in; it sounds delicious.
As a big honey fan, a little of that very thinly spread on some hot, buttered toast would be just the thing. Drool!
Having learned today that a London hotel near Hyde Park is about install bee hives on its roof, and that apparently some bee keeping courses in the city, are wildly over subscribed it seems that lots of people are cottoning on to the idea of looking after the little, buzzy, – and, yes, Gina, sometimes “stingy”! – creatures.
(It was good to read about your cilantro, too. Nice going!)

Bees are being decimated around the world (most likely by pesticides). They are actually essential for our survival; no bees, no us. So I think its great what Michelle Obama is doing,
