Howard Kurtz needs to be worried about why the Washington Post is charging people a quarter million dollars to have dranks and vittles with Washington Post reporters instead of maligning Black reporters covering Michelle Obama.

Rachel Swarns of the New York Times and The Washington Post’s Robin Givhan were among those herded behind the rope Monday. They and the other main beat reporters — Newsweek’s Allison Samuels, Darlene Superville of the Associated Press and Politico’s Nia-Malika Henderson — have something in common: They are all African American women.

[P]perhaps too early to judge. After all, no one raises questions when an Irish American male reporter covers a pol named Murphy. And with her carefully crafted focus on her children, affordable fashion and such reduced-fat apple pie issues as healthy eating, Obama has done little to warrant sharp criticism….But are the beat reporters inadvertently invested in her success? Howard Kurtz

Um so why did you write this article Howard? If there is little to warrant criticism, why not focus on White House media activities that warrant BLISTERING UNWAVERING criticism?

Oh Howard, a more important question might be why do all the WHITE MALE bloggers get pulled from their rumpled beds and basements to ask the President of the United States a  question? OOPS I wasn’t supposed to point out that the White House is granting special access and a major competitive advantage to the folks over there at Hipster Racist Headquarters? If you were any credible sort of media critic Mr. Kurtz would be FAR more concerned about the White House granting a competitive advantage to a purportedly “progressive” entity that has a history of being both rabidly sexist and racist and has a wretched record of workplace diversity when it comes to its “reporters”. . . and NO, I am not speaking of Fox News…this time.

WHY hasn’t anyone done an inquiry into the lack of diversity at Hipster Racist Headquarters, whose “reporters” are EXCLUSIVELY White and overwhelmingly male? “(don’t be deceived by the thumbnails of Russell Simmons and Jermaine Dupri in the sidebar, that’s window dressing-They aren’t paid staffers) Heck at least Fox News has Wendell Gohler or whateverhisnameis. I’m just saying?

If the White House press corps had any sense they’d stop fighting with Hipster Racist Headquarters on the basis of new media vs old media and realize that Hipster Racist Headquarters does not even attempt to reflect the diversity of the United State of America and they are proud of it. But what do I know – Get a clue people!
THIS blog does not “DO” politics, but as the founder of a conference for bloggers of color, many of which unfortunately choose to spend their valuable time discussing political minutia, one has to wonder when the White House is going to help put some obscure citizen journalist( of any background) on the map, the way they’ve been acting as publicists for Hipster Racist Headquarters.  The only reason I am bothering to point this out is because the NABJ won’t do it. Oops did I say that as well? Yeah I did.

In conclusion, I find it curious that Kurtz basically says we don’t question the objectivity of White reporters and then pens hundreds of words questioning the objectivity of Black women journalists. Maybe the reason they are stuck on White House “Soul Patrol” is because that’s the only way they will be allowed to cover politics. They are taking the opportunity they’ve been granted, but I have little doubt, they’d love to be asking the second question at the next presidential news conference, except that’s been reserved for young White males who have little to no experience and can  just leap-frog over all of these experienced journalists who happen to be Black women and are immensely MORE QUALIFIED. Oh but then AGAIN… I’m not supposed to mention that . Continue on observing the unimportant Howie Kurtz!

This whole article is even more delusional because I think we’ve (by “we”, I mean “I”)slammed every last one of the reporters he interviewed . I think we’ve gotten the NY Times reporter,Rachel Swarns, at least 3 times and there is an entire faction of MOW readers dedicated to expurgating any mention of Politico’s Nia-Malika Henderson from our posts. ( I’m not joking. I know at least 3 of y’all who cringed as soon as you read “Nia-Malika”). I may have to go easier on these women.

It can’t be easy stuck covering the First Lady from a distance while the White House confers privilege on much younger, less qualified men. Why is Kurtz kicking a group that’s already been marginalized by the White House when his focus should be aimed at a looming media conglomerate the likes of which will make Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp look like a neighborhood lemonade stand.?  Print out this post. In 15 years you’ll see I’m dead on. In the words  of Master Yoda “Always two there are, no more, no less. A master and an apprentice.”

It hath been foretold.

If you are talking about the Huffington Post and the Iran question, the reason Nico Pitney was asked was because he was one of the few reporters covering that situation day in and day out since the protest began. And the question he asked was culled from a list of questions submitted by Iraqis. And the Washington Post HAS been screaming at him nonstop, Dana Milbank went so far as to call him a dick during a television interview. Huffington Post isn’t my favorite place ever, but I will say that the mainstream media wasn’t asking anything of goddamn sense re:Iran, and Mr. Pitney asked one of the most difficult questions of the night.

There are two separate issues here. You’re focussing on the micro issue related to the question itsself which I don’t quibble with. I am focusing on the macro issue. I have no doubt that on any given night a room full of bloggers is going to ask superior questions to “journalists” for no other reason than bloggers are actually concerned about their audiences.

No one will scream louder that MSM sux rocks louder than me. So I am a huge proponent of new media. I don’t happen to have a problem with the White OHuse dragging bloggers into every press conference, just drag in some variety.

Second, irrespective to the substance of the question, once again, diversity and inclusion get kicked aside and no one asks… if the government favors a single new media outlet for the next four years aren’t we in fact providing an insurmountable advantage? Is that the role of tax-payer supported government? Again, I am not a political blogger, but surely there were other people who could have asked the same or similar questions? and its not just that question, they also get called on during other press conferences. Why hasn’t this entity hired any women of color to do political reporting? that’s a legitimate question considering the tax payer privilege being conferred. .

Well, now, here’s some good, solid food for thought!!

Answer, please, someone, anyone to Gina’s question….?

The more I read Gina’s observations, the more I get to thinking…

@Dee they can’t answer that. To answer the questions means to turn over some rocks and nobody wants to see what crawls out from the darkness. OF COURSE these Black reporters want to be covering some other aspect of politics, they are taking what opportunity they’ve been given and its a low down dirty thing to tar them ( pun intended) with a lack of objectivity just because they aren’t a part of the privileged few.

  6. I am really loving this thread, because you all are on the money. Thank you for calling our Kurtz the way that he should be put on BLAST.

  7. SjP

Could not agree with you more!

  8. admin

Thank you! and that’s why we have our little corner of the world because no one else is going to point this out, especially not Kurtz.

  9. unusualmusic

I do agree with you in terms of the macro situation, What I will say is that based on what I know of teh blogospher re: teh Iran crisis, that particular incident may not have been the best illustration. Because as far as I could see, Andrew Sullivan and Nico Pitney were the go-to people for teh Iran crisis. They aggregated the tweets and leveraged their wide readership to get stuff translated and such. Poepl went off on CNN because they were sleeping while those two were in the mix. So it makes sense that the admin would call on one of them for a question on Iran. If I was aware of another blog run by a POC that was doing the same type of work on that particular issue, then I wouldn’t have said anything.

That being said, I totally agree with teh rest of your critique of Mr. Kurtz’s argument.

  10. unusualmusic

Hmm, I reread your reply to me and I just understood what you said about the fact that the administration seeming to use Huffington Post as its one nod to the blogosphere. And I was just thinking about that the other day. I firmly agree with your argument on that.In fact, I don’t agree that the Huffington Post is the best leftist blog that he could be calling on anyway. In fact, I would love for him to give credentials to much more blogs that deal with different issues, race and environments and LGBT issues, among others. With a hefty hefty dose of diversity. it would be nice to see Pams House Blend, or unapologetic mexican or racewire asking questions. I have a feeling Robert Gibbs would not have an easy time of it at all, though, based on his dodging and weaving in regard to difficult questions of late….

  11. admin

Well in that case, we don’t disagree then.

Who did Milbank call a dick the President or the interview from the Huffington Post? either way it was extremely unprofessional

“@Dee they can’t answer that. To answer the questions means to turn over some rocks and nobody wants to see what crawls out from the darkness.”

Oh, so true, Admin, oh so true!

Still, now that the embarrassing/awkward/uncomfortable questions are out there, I hope that they’ll keep being asked. All being well, after a while if enough people persist in asking them, those currently disinclined to answer may find themselves needing to re-think….

(Just why is it that a “progressive” (ahem….) entity, especially one that appears to be black/brown/yellow/red people allergic in terms of offering employment opportunities, and which is also just one of any number of relevant blogs out here that could be approached, being treated so favourably? My curiosity has been sparked. I want to know, now, too!)

    @malletgirl02

He called teh journalist from Huffington Post Nico Pitney, a dick.
