Forbes Magazine has ranked First Lady Michelle Obama number 40 on its’ list of the “100 Most Powerful Women in the World.” According to The Washington Post, the magazine ranks the women based on two factors: visibility and the size of the organization or country they lead. Michelle Obama was joined on the list by several other U.S. Government officials, including:
2.) Sheila Bair, Chairwoman of the FDIC
35.) Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House
36.) Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State
48.) Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Supreme Court Justice
51.) Janet Napolitano, Homeland Security Secretary
54.) Sonia Sotomayor, Supreme Court Justice
55.) Mary Schapiro, Chairwoman of the Securities and Exchange Commission
56.) Kathleen Sebelius, Health and Human Services Secretary
When I first saw the stories about the First Lady wearing shorts I thought for sure they would pass rather quickly. But low and behold, almost one week later and there are still new stories cropping up about the First Lady’s “right to bear legs”. Who would have ever thought that one pair of brown legs could stir up so much controversy. It’s as if some people were not considering that it is August and the First Family was headed to Arizona.

According to the Associate Press, an NBC’s “Today” show poll had over 300,000 responses with 83% giving the First Lady’s shorts a thumbs up. The blog post was the show’s most commented-on of 2009. A similar Huffington Post poll revealed the same with 58% giving a nod to Mrs O vacation fashion choice.
“Why not wear linen pants…more tasteful. She may have been on vacation — oh yeah I’m having a senior moment, she has been on a tax-payer-supported world wide vacation since the inauguration — but she should respect the Office of the President and the USA,” commented Charlie Smith of Montgomery, Alabama on the Today Show site.
Question for Mr Smith, and the like: If you’re a senior, do you remember this photo?

I guess Mrs O was channeling one of her predecessors, Jackie O, when she came up with the “strange” idea to wear shorts on a family summer vacation.
Robin Givhan, of The Washington Post, stated that she was “ambivalent” about the first lady’s shorts — mainly because stepping off Air Force One makes it an “official” photo and so should, perhaps, be considered a more formal moment.
“I think in many ways it’s symbolic,” Givhan explained. “We don’t see first ladies looking informal, and I think it’s a wonderful thing that she’s bringing informality to that position. But we’re still grappling with what the first lady is supposed to be all about.”
In my humble opinion Mrs Obama looks fabulous in whatever she decides to wear. She is fabulous because she is a proven strong, confident, trailblazing woman who is very comfortable in the skin she is in and there are not many people that can make that claim.

She’s a Lady! And reminds me of Jackie O! Classy beautiful and elegant, yet she is the lady next door you can lunch with and have a girls day with! Michelle rocks!

We are proud of Michelle the First Lady who is following the HolySpiritRoseWay and it shows for she has becoeme the true role model for not just black women but women around the world for her diverse multidimensional personality and deep and rich character and her true heart of a woman who gives much more comfortably than she ever receives and that is why I give her the assignment of for the next month trying to receive more gracefully from her husband the first man who adores her and from others who find her the most refreshing woman of the Whtehouse in the world! God blesses U!

Apparently, some naysayers expected Mrs. Obama to wear high-heel shoes and designer dress for a 4-hour hiking trip to the Grand Canyon. Perhaps, the next article will question why Mr. Obama didn’t wear suit and tie with an American flag pin. You would think we didn’t have an economic meltdown, unemployment and two wars going on.

If you’ll notice the difference between the other women on the list and Mrs. Obama, you will find that they all have real life jobs. She doesn’t so where does her so-called “power” come from? Oh, right…her husband is President. She’s riding the coat-tails of the Office of the President of the United States of America….but no real job.

With so much talk about the economy, one would think people would have better things to occupy their time with than complain or put in their two cents (even those without any cents) about First lady’s attire.

But I Say She Should Were Shorts Because its Hot and its Summer Her Husband Was Wearing Pants So It Don’t Matter That She is in a Position She is Human She is Going To Feel Hot. I Mean She is Not Going To Wear Pants all The Time I Wear Me Some Shorts Too. 1st it was Her Clothes 2nd it was Her Arms and Now its Her Shorts What Else.

I think that she should’nt wear shorts if she is going out into the public. She knows she is going to be photograph. She could change clothes at the hotel. I mean she is after all the frist lady, and with that it brings responsabilities even with what she wears. She needs to be more discret.
Thank you

I think she looks great. I think clothing should be appropriate to the occasion, and shorts are completely appropriate for hiking in Arizona in August. But as far as I can tell, Jackie Kennedy is wearing a shift dress in that picture.

The Black female haters are never going to stop.
Lady Michelle could have worn a ballroom gown on this trip and they STILL would have complained about her.
It is best to ignore these haters.
I do not care what they say, we can see the Black female hatred in their little “Comments”.
She looks great in her shorts.

I’ve been soooo out of touch lately trying to finish up a major project. But, when sojourning the new outlets for news about the First Lady, I was delighted to see that she is on the ‘World’s Most Powerful Women” list! This is truly news and I am certainly happy and proud of the recognition for our First Lady!
And as for the shorts…I say “go head on cause every body ain’t able”.
