On Wednesday First Lady Michelle Obama was promoting one of the causes closest to her heart, healthy diets and exercise at the White House to her audience of elementary school children. As the Mom in chief Michelle realizes the influence that she as a mother and that mothers have on their own children and how important it is to encourage them to make healthy lifestyle choices. Michelle Obama is great with children and brings the conversation to a level that they can understand. I am fascinated at how she is able to connect so naturally with the little ones. I am also pleased that she not only told them what to eat but she explained the importance of healthy eating and exercise so that kids understand and develop healthy eating habits for life.
The First Lady debunked the myth that healthy food does not taste good by serving a healthy, tasty menu. She has inspired me to eat healthy. I am cooking more vegetables now. I have actually lost ten pounds! How many of you mothers have been inspired by FLOTUS to cook healthier foods for your family or to turn off that television and let your children exercise? I’d love to hear your stories.

One of the things that I think that is great about Michelle Obama is that she has what I like to call a “real woman’s body”. She is curvy and she is healthy. She exercises, eats right, and demonstrates that you don’t have to be built like a boy to be healthy and beautiful. She is a great role model for women and girls and I think her influence will be felt for many years to come.
I’ve always been a vegetable buff and I try to get to the gym at least 3 times a week. My goal now is to go every morning before 7am. Some days are easier than others, but I’m learning to do better. It’s the right choice for my health and for my family. The First Lady is definitely an inspiration.

I don’t have kids, but I have planted a container garden and do a second round of reps for my arms. I like that she focuses on kids. I probably wouldn’t enjoy her as much if she turned into Oprah telling grown folks what to put into their mouths. Lead by example.

You are absolutely, right Aminah. When I heard that Michelle works out at 5am, that was all the motivation I needed. I used to go after work but sometimes skipped it altogether if I was tired, working late or meeting friends for a drink. Now, I am up EVERY morning for my workout. I’m on the treadmill, crosstrainer or swimming pool at 6pm.
Apart from it being quiet, I get my time to relax and reflect without queueing for machines and being deafened by loud music. I have my hour workout which sets me up for the day and I don’t have to feel guiilty if I over indulge. I find I have more energy and all the efforts on the rowing machines and dumbells are paying off – I too have the right to bare arms now !!! This is the fastest that I have ever seen a change in my body.
As a black woman who is slightly younger than Michelle, she is a welcome breath of fresh air and an inspiration to all women but in particular black women who often feel often feel under represented in the media. More so, in England where I live.
It is great to log on or pick up a magazine and be inspired by someone like her. A black woman who worked hard to achieve her goals, who takes care of her body, who eats well but indulges occassionally. Michelle LaVaughan Obama – I salute you. Thanks a million.
