First Lady Michelle Obama will appear on The Today Show Wednesday, February 3. According to The Today’s Family Blog…
“Matt Lauer will sit down with Mrs. Obama to get her thoughts on her family’s first year in the White House and also a new project that she is passionate about.”
I’m thinking her new passion has been the much talked about childhood obesity initiative that she is set to kick-off next week.
This afternoon First Lady will meet, at the White House in the Old Family Dining Room, with the Cabinet and Congressional members who are serving in leadership roles on childhood obesity policy. They will discuss combined efforts to create national awareness of the dangers of childhood obesity and the simple steps families, schools, the business and non-profit communities and all levels of government can take together to help combat the epidemic.
Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, Senator Blanche Lincoln, D-AR, Agriculture Committee Chair, Senator Saxby Chambliss, R-GA, Agriculture Committee Ranking Member, Senator Tom Harkin, D-IA, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Chair, Senator Mike Enzi, R-WY, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Ranking Member, Representative George Miller, D-CA, Education and Labor Committee Chair, and Representative Collin Peterson, D-MN, Agriculture Committee Chair will all be in attendance for today’s meeting.
Next Tuesday, February 9th the First Lady will unveil her childhood obesity initiative.

Tuesday is February 2nd not 3rd. So, will she be on the show tomorrow or did she make her appearance today? I am confused.

Cee Cee:
The very first paragraph states, “First Lady Michelle Obama will appear on The Today Show Wednesday, February 3.” This will just be a talk about her, and will include comments about her obesity initiative.
“Next Tuesday,” as stated in the last paragraph, “February 9th the First Lady will unveil her childhood obesity initiative.” This is the date when her initiative will officially begin.
Hope this clears it up for you. No confusion.

Today Mrs. O talked about date nights. She said they don’t go out anymore for their date nights, for they now use the White House for that. Very interesting. I just love this woman!! Now the media are going after her for using an example her children diet. These people are so desperate to destroy the Obama family.

I saw the interview too and I liked it.
Red…I’m with you I don’t get why people are all up and arms about the weight thing, they are just trying to find something to attack. I just looked at the yahoo front page and it is on there, I predict in a few hours we’ll have Michelle haters coming on here. I think she was just trying to relate her situation to others, no big deal.

Actually I mentioned my concern about using children in an illustration about weight two days ago on this blog. I don’t think its because people want to destroy the First Lady, I think its because people have legitimate concerns anytime you start talking about little girls bodies in terms of weight. I think Mrs Obama will learn a lot more about eating disorders as she takes this journey.

I don’t get it. What is wrong with trying to encourage our young kids to put the video games down for a hour, and go outside and move around, exercise. And trying to help people to eat more healthy. We have kids who are battling diseases they weren’t battling years ago, like diabetes, high blood pressure, and others. Yes I know about eating disorders, let’s deal with that too. Let’s deal with kids picking on other kids because of their weight. Does childhood obesity concern anyone? I have a nephew who 9 years old and he weighs 150 pounds. Let’s just give it a chance, Mrs Obama will learn and so will the people who don’t seem to want to give this a chance.

People want to criticize this before they even learn anything about what she’s talking about. I’m sure she is talking to people, experts from all warts of life.Including doctors. If a child is ten pounds overweight, that is not obesity. But when we have kids sixty, eighty, one hundred, even more, that is dangerous health wise. And maybe there will be plans to deal with eating disorders also. I’m for giving this a chance.

@Adarton people are not criticizing the First Lady they are expressing legitimately held concerns abotu how we approach a topic with massive implications for the psyche’s of young fat children. I was told by my pediatrician that I would be dead by the age of 30 MIND YOU I WAS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL! So I’m really not about to let pass all these skinny people who say that because kids are fat and we’re concerned abotu their health, to hell with the impact of singling them out for additional scrutiny. Again, you seem to think childhood obesity is merely about mechanics… as do most skinny people. That’s kinda my point. You assume that fat people are too stupid to know how weight is loss. By every objective measure I was in the top 2% of kids my age all throughout school, I was still morbidly obese.
Again as a fat person, I get sick of people acting as if obesity is a mechanical issue. Fat people aren’t stupid. they aren’t dumb and the medical community doesn’t know all. Afterall these are the same idots who told me that I should eat a HIGH CARB low fat diet to lose weight without mentioning that all those carbs were what was making me ravenous.
SO yes, there are legitimate concerns and my impression of the First Lady is that she is open to hearing those concerns.

@ADMIN……Let’s just see how things go. I’m sure the First Lady will be open to hearing all concerns. In this discussion I hope we all are open to listening to each other concerns, and being open to truly discussing this issue. My opinion it’s all about our kids. See Admin you are so wrong, I in no way assume that overweight kids or adults are stupid. I don’t like using the word fat. My only concern is these kids health. That’s all.

I agree, I am waiting to see how the campaign unfolds and how the First Lady plans on fighting for the health of children in a constructive manner. That being said, she has partnered with pediatricians in this effort, which appears to make sense on one level, but on another she should be wary as when it comes to weight loss most medical doctors are QUACKS. I’m about protecting a group of children who are vulnerable to attack because they look different. You are worried about their health, so am I. I recognize that their health in its totality is far more important that complying with the BMI- another source of quackery from the medical profession.
Again, I think the First Lady is open to hearing those concerns.
