If the first couple can find time to go to their younger daughter Sasha’s parent-teacher conference with all the issues that are happening in the world then shame on you parents who do not attend your children’s parent teacher conferences. The image of FLOTUS & POTUS going to Sasha’s parent-teacher conference sends a powerful message to Sasha that she is important and that her education is important to the Leader of the Free World. POTUS & FLOTUS both hold Juris Doctorate degrees from Harvard and education is important to them. They have talked about parent’s responsibility of keeping kids on tracks and making sure that homework is done. In this global environment with competition increasing it a quality education is become more important than ever. How are you promoting education in your own home with your children?

The White House has announced the details of the 2010 Easter Egg Roll. All you interested MOWatchers be prepared to man your computers and gets your bids in early because the lottery will open on February 25th and close on the 28th. Here are the details courtesy of the White House Press House…

The President and First Lady announced today that this year’s White House Easter Egg Roll will be held on Monday, April 5, 2010 with the theme of “Ready, Set, Go!” promoting health and wellness. The event will feature live music, sports courts, cooking stations, storytelling and, of course, Easter egg rolling. All of the activities will encourage children to lead healthy and active lives and follow the First Lady’s ‘Let’s Move!’ initiative, a national campaign to combat childhood obesity. The White House will open its South Lawn for children aged 12 years and younger and their families. 

White House Easter Egg Roll tickets will be distributed through an online lottery system, allowing guests from across the United States to participate in a tradition that dates back to 1878. The lottery will open for entries on February 25th and close on February 28th. Full ticketing details can be found at www.whitehouse.gov/eastereggroll.

The First Lady said that she had been warned by the family paediatrician that ’something was getting out of balance’ with her two children Malia 11, and Sasha, 8.

The article goes on to highlight what changes will be made to Sasha and Malia’s diet.

The girls then had to adhere to new ground rules – less burgers, low-fat milk, and fruits and water instead of sugary drinks; the change was significant, she said.

As a mother of a “husky” little boy, I try to watch portion sizes, sugar intake and add more fruits and vegetable to Biko’s diet.  I certainly can appreciate the First Lady’s campaign against childhood obesity.  I can’t wait to see what programs she initiates as a result.  My hope is  that our schools will pay close attention, especially the school cafeterias around the country.  Posted by Bridgette of http://trailblazer-firstlady.blogspot.com. Hey folks, this is Gina. Sorry to interject in Bridgette’s conversation, but as someone who was a morbidly obese child, I CRINGE at any public discussion of a child’s “weight” or “diet” in a public space. I’ve been on a diet since I was 6 year’s old. While I applaud First Lady Obama’s focus on childhood obesity, let’s leave her children out of it at this site.  Once people feel free to comment on a child’s weight/ diet, they don’t stop. All the skinny people commenting, including the First Lady, are well intentioned, but being an overweight child is HELL, let’s not A) indicate that children who clearly are not obese should be  on a diet likewise, treat fat kids with some compassion, they’re already torturing themselves and being tortured at school.  I just had to interject because it’s my worst nightmare that any child would be made to feel self conscious in anyway based on something posted on one of my blogs. I realize skinny people, including Mrs. Obama don’t understand or get this, but let’s leave her children, or anyone else’s children, out of the childhood obesity discussion on this blog.   At the end of the day, Mrs. Obama is another well meaning skinny person who can never understand the life of a fat child. I’m actually dreading this assault on fat kids. I still think she totally rocks, but I stopped taking weight loss advice from skinny people and I’m much happier. If you’re a fat kid, keep your head up. There is so much you can’t control about your life right now. When you get older, that will change, just hold on until then.

For the first time in a weekly address, the President is joined by the First Lady as they celebrate Christmas. They both honor those serving overseas, those who have sacrificed for their country, and the families that stand by them.

For those of you that have been asking, “Where are the weeMichelles?” Here they are! The First Lady, weeMichelles, and First Dog Bo visited the Children’s National Medical Center this afternoon continuing a tradition that began with First Lady Bess Truman. They visited with children in the medical center in a reception that was closed to the press. After the closed meeting they stayed behind to read a book and take questions. You just gotta love this family. 

REMARKS BY THE FIRST LADY

AND SASHA AND MALIA OBAMA

AFTER A VISIT

MRS. OBAMA: You guys have any questions? You can have questions for Malia and Sasha, too.

Q: How will the holidays be different for you this year?

MRS. OBAMA: How will the holidays — what do you think? Do you think the holidays will be different?

SASHA: Well, it will be easier to get on the plane — (laughter) — than last year. But I don’t think anything will be very different.

MRS. OBAMA: Yes, we’re doing the same things we usually do. Every year, ever since the kids were born and even before, we go to Hawaii, because that’s where the President is from. So we go with a group of friends. So as soon as all the work here is done, we’ll go there.

So we’ve done that ever — I don’t think they’ve ever spent a Christmas –

MALIA: No, there’s that one Christmas.

MRS. OBAMA: There’s that one Christmas. Any other questions? Yes, sweetie. Here we have one, right there. You want to — there’s a mic. It’ll be fun, talk in the mic, talk loud.

Q: What did you get the President for Christmas?

MRS. OBAMA: Oh, I can’t tell. They’re going to — (laughter.)

SASHA: They’re going to tell.

MRS. OBAMA: They’re going to tell.

MALIA: It’s something good, though. I hope he’ll like it.

MRS. OBAMA: It’s good. You know, we got him sports — I got him sports stuff.

SASHA: We got him –

MRS. OBAMA: Don’t say it, just give it a category.

SASHA: I’m not. It’s something he likes. (Laughter.)

MRS. OBAMA: Okay. Well, there you go.

Well, what do you want for Christmas?

Q: A stuffed dog.

MRS. OBAMA: A stuffed dog. Aww. All right, Santa. All right. Okay. This little — okay, we have one. And she in the pink had a question.

Q: Merry Christmas, Mrs. Obama.

MRS. OBAMA: Merry Christmas to you, too.

Q: How many Christmas trees are in the White House?

MRS. OBAMA: How many Christmas trees are in the White House? How many total are there? There are a lot.

MALIA: Like, okay, well, let’s see, one, two, three –

MRS. OBAMA: No, wait. (Laughter.) I think it’s 24. I think — where’s my team? (Laughter.) It’s like 24 — or 26 –

SASHA: Twenty-six.

MRS. OBAMA: Twenty-six. See, I knew it was close. Yes, that’s a lot of Christmas –

MALIA: Unfortunately, you don’t get presents under all of them. (Laughter.)

SASHA: What about the wishing tree?

MRS. OBAMA: Well, there’s one — you want to talk about the wishing tree, one of the trees?

SASHA: One of the trees is called the wishing tree, and it is made out of cardboard. And so you can write down a wish and you roll it up and then you can put it one of the holes and it might come true.

MRS. OBAMA: So that’s a new tradition at the White House. So what we want you all to do next year is to come to the White House, because you can see all of them. It’s open to anybody who wants to come. (Bo barks.) You, too. (Laughter.)

All right, you promise me that next year you’ll come by the White House and see for yourself? Okay.

MR. SNOWDEN: Those were great questions, kids.

MRS. OBAMA: Those were great — wait, wait, wait. We have one. We’re going to get them all in, I know. She had her hand up. Sorry, Mr. Chairman.

Q: I was going to ask –

MRS. OBAMA: Just make something up. Do you want to ask Bo a question? Bo, can you answer something?

Q: I was going to ask, people were saying we’re going to get our pictures. And I was going to ask, are we going to take them with you?

MRS. OBAMA: Take pictures?

Q: Or are you just going to give one to us? (Laughter.)

MRS. OBAMA: That’s a good question — Alan. (Laughter.) Were pictures promised?

MR. FITTS: Shake hands with everyone.

MRS. OBAMA: Okay.

Q: What’s your favorite Christmas song?

MRS. OBAMA: What’s my favorite Christmas song? Oh, well, Malia and Sasha have been playing two that are just drilled into my head. “Carol of the Bells” and “Jingle Bells.”

SASHA: Oh, Malia — oh, yes.

MRS. OBAMA: Yes, we’ve heard that for months.

SASHA: Well, I don’t play “Jingle Bells” as much as Malia plays “Carol of the Bells.” (Laughter.)

MRS. OBAMA: Those are my favorite.

SASHA: I’m getting bored of that song now. (Laughter.)

MRS. OBAMA: All right. Okay, guys, we’re going to come around and shake hands. Thank you guys. Merry Christmas, happy holidays, happy New Year.

“Christmas at the White House: An Oprah Primetime Special’ will follow the talk show maven as she visits the President and First Lady Michelle Obama as they prepare for their family’s first Christmas at the White House.

Winfrey, who was the first major celebrity to endorse Obama’s presidential candidacy, will also chat with the First couple in the exclusive hour-long special.

The multiple Emmy Award-winner will also get a behind-the-scenes tour of the White House’s elaborate Christmas preparations.

Winfrey has not been seen publicly with the Obamas since showing up at both Obama’s victory rally in Chicago last November, as well as his inauguration in Washington, D.C. in January.”

The primetime special will air December 13th on ABC at 10 PM EST.

This is Gina, no I haven’t finished National Novel Writing Month, but this is absolutely my mostest favoritest time of the year. Yes, I realize those aren’t actual words, but when has that ever stopped me.

Whenever I am in DC during the Christmas season, I love going to the Christmas lights. I love the annual interview with the First Ladies as they show off the decorations inside.

The trees decorated by the 50 states.

Its great having little kids in the White House again.

While the reviews are mixed, I’m looking forward to seeing the never before seen footage of the First Lady and weeMichelles. The documentary also highlights campaign workers and volunteers. So far neither I, nor anyone that I know is in the film. Oh well maybe in 2012.

The White House Photo Office has just released this new portrait of the First Family. First Lady Michelle Obama, President Barack Obama, and the weeMichelles sat for a family portrait in the Green Room of the White House on September 1, 2009. The photo was taken by Annie Leibovitz. This is the first official family photo of the Obamas in the White House. This will definitely be one for the history books.
