The man who brought us bronzed statutes of Britney Spears giving birth, Suri Cruise’s first bowel movement, Paris Hilton’s Autopsy, that hideous bust of Hillary Clinton topless and a sarcophagus and burial mask of Oprah Winfrey is at it again. This time his target isMichelle Obama. This is what a WAOD reader said via email:

No words. I don’t even know if it’s good or not. I just don’t know why he can’t make a bust that look like Michelle now. He HAD to put some hoop earrings on the woman…ugh.WAOD Reader

Sandra Rose’s take on the sculpture:

The Afro pick sitting fashionably askew in the Nefertiti style body wave perm adds a nice touch.SandraRose.com

For their part, the Edward’s promoters offer this interpretation of the indefatigable:

“Michelle Obama’s Makeover for America” presents an accessorized mannequin bust of Obama that foregoes the conventional pearl necklace, and provides for her a ‘signature look’ to take to Washington. “The goal is to create a look for Michelle Obama that eliminates excessive comparisons to Jackie Kennedy,” said Edwards, who studied under the tutelage of legendary fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez, “like supermodel Tyra Banks’s photos in Harper’s Bazaar, or the puzzling comment from CBS’s Byron Pitts that recommended ‘less Jackee, more Jackie O.’”

A pearl-studded Afro pick, shaped like an eagle, demonstrates the makeover’s fashion mix of Black African and White House heritage to reinvigorate the traditional First Lady pearls. A tight, spiral-textured mane complements Michelle Obama’s likeness, with the pearl Afro pick placed modishly askew in a Nefertiti-esque hairstyle. Included are big hoop earrings shaped like O’s that seem to suggest, according to a gallery spokesman, “Look out Oprah, a new ‘Lady O’s’ in charge.”

Adorning the breasts of Michelle Obama’s bust are temporary tattoos, of which an American flag is depicted, to compensate for Barack’s pin-free lapels. Additional breast tattoo designs for Mrs. Obama, by Chicago tattoo artist Alex Higgins, will also be exhibited.

“Michelle Obama inspires a fashion template change that many First Ladies of the 21st Century may follow, as we witness minorities in this country becoming the majority,” added the spokesman. SOURCE

I am sorry. This looks in no way like Michelle Obama. Look at what he did to Oprah Winfrey.

How disrespectful and a sad reflection of this country still……do you think for one minute he would DARE put this same image out in Cindy MCain
    form!!!!!!!
It would blasted from here to eternity by the Repbulicans!!!!!
When are we going to see the white version showing Cindy McCain, not in this lifetime I bet.
What a repugnant, vile excuse for an artist he is…..some people are just complete trash.

I am trying not to criticize it too harshly because my inclination is to always leave room for “artistic” license. it would help if it resembled Michelle remotely, but I can’t make the leap. And why is he troubled by Michelle’s comparison to Jackie O?

I like the sculpture, I also like the Oprah one and even the Hillary one…he’s an artist - he’s allowed to be a little out there!

I’m sorry I can’t see the image so I have no comment on Michelle’s image. But the example of Oprah is a good look-alike, except this must have been created before she had her nose refined. But I can see her as the Mother Goddess.

But comparisons to Jackie Kennedy Onasis? I guess I’ve never heard them. What do they have in common? I don’t know how many languages Michelle speaks, Jackie was married to a President and served as First Lady of the USA…Michelle is married to a candidate… Jackie was classy, elegant, stylish, and soft-spoken, while Michelle needs charm school to learn how to walk like a gracious woman, seems to own one black belt, and looks like she could kick some butt!!

I’m not sure Cindy McCain is seen in quite the same light as the above listed people. Is she physically that recognizable? I think she looks like a generic 50-something white woman from Arizona. Nothing very remarkable, she’s not distinct. I think Michelle’s appearance and scowl have become etched upon the minds of most Americans and her verbal gaffs and unhappy statements are unique to this election. I can see why an artist would tap into her features for a recognizable model.

Oh Hi. I’m back. I went to another web site to see the sculpture. Well, the beauty of art and “artistic license” allows each piece of art to be viewed and experienced.

The likeness to Michelle is poor (I don’t see her at all), but I did see a very proud face, almost defiant. Like you could hurt her, but never break her. The flag doesn’t look like a tattoo…it resembles a burn or a brand (maybe racially significant). No wonder she’s fuming.

She is not sporting an Egyptian hairdo of Akhenaten’s era…Nefertiti probably shaved her head (or had her hair cut very short) to accommodate her various wigs and crowns…the hairdo is far more reminiscent of Mrs. Frankenstein after a few volts.

Even though it isn’t a very good representation, Michelle should at least be flattered that she ranks amongst his celebs. She and her husband seem to do well among them. That statue could be found by explorers 3,500 years from now…much as they found the famous bust of Nefertiti. And they’ll say, “who is this proud warrior woman?”

This is not artistic… it looks NOTHING like Michelle. It overemphasizes her sexual features as Black women are always over-sexualized in the media. I think it’s rather disrespectful and about as artistic as the “menstrual” figurines you find in the yards of flag toting racist separatists in the south who put “County First”. Ha… what a joke! …. I actually encountered the big eyed, red lipped “menstrual” figurines while in college attempting to inform citizens of their rights during election season. I guess Sambo was an artistic expression also.

    It doesn’t look like Michelle.

Rather, it looks like a generic representation of how the artist views Black women in general - highly sexualized and exaggerated body parts - which reveals more about the artist than it does Michelle.

Dear For the Love of Art

Sambo was an fictional “Indian” boy character in a child’s story. He was chased by a tiger that wanted his “Indian” clothing as ransom for not eating Sambo. There are no tigers in Africa.

I’m not familiar with a “menstrual” figurine….I’ll have to look that up.

Art is supposed to be uplifting! She is not a beautiful woman, but she is also not ugly.

The frown looks just like her. She rarely smiles. She wore an immodest dress with her cleavage hanging out on the View. I think it depicts her perfectly. She is not the image you would think of as a first lady!! She needs to straighten up her act, smile more or have something to smile about. Maybe she frowns because her teeth are just dreadful. Would the image look better with a huge mouth full of teeth???

No it doesn’t look like Michelle Obama but it does look like Daniel Edwards’ mammy.

  13. tutut

It looks good to me, takes her right back to her roots, which is a good thing right?
