Asked to compare Michelle Obama to Sarah Palin, Congressman Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA) stated:
“Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they’re a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they’re uppity,” Westmoreland said.
Asked to clarify that he used the word “uppity,” Westmoreland said, “Uppity, yeah.”
Nothing vague, coded, or nuanced about that–just a dose of that good old Southern racism charm.

How dare Michelle and Barack be this loving couple with beautiful kids and a lovely home and have the unmitigated gall to want to do public good. How freaking dare they? Who do they think they are?? We want our first family to have pimples!
Its tre chic to be trailer park trashy! Its in vogue to be more Clampett than Huxtable..not that being a Huxtable was EVER in (that’s just crazy talk, black folks living like that? just plain crazy talk). Yep, that Barack and Michelle dont know their place.

“they’re a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they’re uppity”
okay, where to begin here?
let’s break this down:
they (plural) are a member (singular) of an elitist-class (colletive) individual (singular) that thinks (singular) they (plural) are uppity.
Who thinks they’re uppity? the ‘elitist-class’ individual’ ?
And this is one of our elected leaders? Michelle said it best : “We have forgotten how to be excellent.”
Or is that uppity?

I totally agree w/ the Congressman. Well articulated too.
Why are the suburban liberals so defensive ALL the time?
Michelle also said, paraphrased …this is the first time in my life that I felt the system is working (a Harvard Law graduate).

“…that thinks that they’re uppity…” What does that even mean? People don’t think they’re uppity, they just are (or are accused of being, to be more exact).
I’ve been wondering when someone would come right out and say the word. The whole ‘elitist’ thing that blew up before the Pennsylvania primary was a weeks-long euphemism, but here we have it out on the table. I might actually appreciate that frankness more than the continued use of coded language we hear from everyone else.

Why in Gods name would the need occur to compare Michelle Obama to Sarah Palin? Michelle Obama isn’t running for office. What…..is she supposed to be the answer to Michelle? If this is the case, then why can’t we compare the family situation of the two women as well?

I can’t even believe that anyone would make a comment like that in this day and age. However, after seeing the way some of the Republican speakers made fun of Obama’s service to people as a community orgainizer it shouldn’t surprise me. They are the ones who are elitist and think they are better than anyone who is not a rich Republican. The “holier than thou attitude” about religion and morality is more than I can stomach. To hear them talk you can’t be Christian or moral if you don’t have a Republican tag. They are so hypocritical. John McCain wasn’t a very nice or moral person when he was having an affair with Cindy while married to his 1st wife who had been seriously injured in an automobile accident. We don’t hear about that part of his life though. The Republican convention and the snide remarks by many of speakers and especially Sarah Palin were not funny to me. She came off as very sarcastic and full of herself and not appealing to me at all. I have always tried to vote for the person and not the party but this party and these people are just too mean and uncaring and I wouldn’t vote for them this time if they were the only one running.

OK, maybe not “uppity”, but how about snotty, snobby, or boorish? Truculent, churlish, or unpleasant? Snooty, stuck-up or superior? It sounds like the congressman just couldn’t quite put his finger on the right adjective.
She definitely has an attitude, they both do.

It’s funny that when Blacks try to aspire to anything above a servile position, they are “uppity.” For “Whites,” this is simply normal. When a Black person is well-spoken, he is trying to be above his station, forgetting his place. Nothing about the Obamas should come across as snobbish. They exemply a typical American family. Anyone who sees any “uppity” qualities in them honestly look in the mirror and claim they are not racist. You don’t have to admit it openly, but at least be honest with yourself.
If Michelle Obama had unwed pregnant teenager, it would be front and center. Also if the father of this unwed pregnant teenager’s baby had a myspace page full of expletives, and was paraded at the national conventional, it would have been over for Senator Obama. If like Cindy McCain, Michelle Obama had had a drug addiction problem, it would be fodder for the Republican campaign. There is a clear double-standard in this country, and I think we are being hypocrites when we deny this.

anyone who has lived in Chicago and seen insiders of the Chicago Machine now that those in that circle are definitely “entitled” I think that is a better description.
This has nothing to do with Race, just basic insider politics at its core. Obama may claim to be an outsider but Michelle is a second generation Chicago Politico - father ex-precinct captain and she ex staff of Daley. You do not get either of those roles by being neutral of free thinkers.
What the American people deserve is for us to evaluate all candidates without the color, gender or party blinders on…..otherwise not only our children, but their children, will be living in the mess we create.

@Dallas and Lincon,
You White folks always give yourselves away. LOL! What you both want to say is”Who do these ni@@ers think they are”. You might as well sit back and relax becasue “we” are going no where”. The time has come and there is nothing you can do about it.
